The idea is very simple, it would allow for leads to be tied to two fences rather than a fence and an animal. This would allow for a rope-like effect which could be very useful for builders. It would be very useful for rope, suspension and draw bridges; telephone wires, electrical cables; rigging on a ship, decorative rope swings, the list goes on and on. This would be a purely decorative feature so no balancing issue would arise. Additionally, due to being quite simple, it shouldn't require much coding.
As a side note, the rope between posts would not act as any kind of barrier, it is just for aesthetic purposes. There are also no real limitations on distance and the rope between fences would pass through any block, again due to being just for aesthetics. Edit: The only way leads could detach from their posts is if a player detached the lead or if one of the fence posts were destroyed.

Thank you for your support : ). I was unaware that leads between animals and fences detached after a while, i suspect that this may be either due to a bug or the mob breaking the lead somehow. In any case, it would not detach unless you broke it at either fence post, i will edit the post just to highlight this.
I really love the wires from Immersive Engineering, and this sounds like a good way to implement them in Vanilla for decoration. My only problem with this is that leads might be a bit expensive, considering they require slime.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

Thank you for your support : ). I would argue that they wouldn't be all that expensive considering you get two leads for every slime ball (as a side note, if you wanted a lot of slime, you could go to a swamp biome under a full moon as slimes spawn more frequently then but they dont spawn under a new moon). Additionally, even though this could be done easily in a survival world, the idea is geared more towards creative to allow builds to be more detailed. It also gives a non-redstone reason to collect a lot of slimeballs - and thusly making people want to explore to find a swamp.
How would they connect? Obviously they would connect horiztonally like the automatically-rendered slats between fence posts, but would they connect vertically too (like the cables on the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco)?

@DuhDerp, Yes, exactly like that : ). That actually is what i was thinking of when i wrote 'suspension bridges' (though for some reason i thought it was called the Brooklyn Bridge :P). For reference for other users, here is a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Thought that this was already suggested, would be very nice for Bridges and thought about it the other day.
If we're already on it, can be put it on Stone Walls as well?
As far as I know, Leads don't deattach themselves but they do sometimes not rendner, making them look invisible, and arrows can also remove them.
While the arrow removal is a nice idea for some things, I'd prefer if this was removed for creative builds(or if there was a reinforced lead, looking exactly the same but not having this property) or if it only worked for player arrows, but better to be safe than sorry so a new item or full change would work better.

@r543 Thank you for your suggestion but i think having a brand new item which is just to connect from one fence to the other is a bit much. I was unaware that leads detached if they were shot by an arrow but i dont see this as being a problem, the only time a skeleton could potentially hit a lead is if you were hiding behind the fence. That would mean you would just pick it up anyway so, while it may be inconvinient, it is easily resolved. I dont see a huge problem with them being attached to cobble walls, they would need a new (or at least modified) texture though.

It wouldn't be for connecting, both would be able to be connected from fence to fence and would look the same if placed the visually, the idea is simply to have one that can be removed via launched arrows(like the current in game) while the other cannot, can imagine this having some nice effects for certain things.
Yes, I'd agree with that and think the same way, but upon putting my Horse at a Fence in a Village(in MP) and returning later after a while, seeing the Horse a good distance away(almost didn't find it) I did change my mind upon this and would prefer if they didn't deatach(or if we could have a second item, either make it use more strings or reduce the string requirement for the deatachable) kinda makes the placing feature "useless" if they can accidentally get removed like that.
Of course I can understand it would be much easier to just have one item and do the changes on this, I simply meant having a second one to still keep the original behaviour, but I wouldn't mind if that was removed.
As for Cobble Walls, a new texture and model to be attached to the top of the post instead of the middle, right?

@r543 To avoid over-complicating things, like i said in my post, the only way the leads could detach is if you either broke the lead or the fence it was attached to was destroyed. There doesnt need to be a new item introduced when it isn't needed nor wanted. The original idea however is just a very minor tweak which would remove code that prevented leads being placed on fences (without a mob) and allowing them to then attach to a second fence. Im not too keen on placing them on cobblestone walls as it would require Mojang to invest a lot more time creating textures and re-coding and this, that and the other. The original idea however just uses already in-game assets like the textures, sounds, particle effects and even the vast majority of the coding, just with the restriction removed. Anyway, thank you for your suggestion but it is just over-complicating things when they dont need to be; the idea was for this to be very simple and very easy to do but would have a drastic effect on decorating.

I'm fine with that, only wanted to explain on why I thought of two items, but for me changing the lead to be like that is no issue at all.
Don't think that allowing them to be placed on Cobblestone walls would be that much work as they're similar to fences. It might not look perfect since the Cobblestone Wall doesn't have a Gap like the Fence, so the rolled up Lead would be kinda inside the wall(unless it was attached at the top pole, which would need a new model but that's it, minor thing), but the Cobblestone Wall isn't something I directly need.
So I'm fine with the Core Idea, attach them to Fences and have the "removeable by arrows" thing removed.
This is a great idea and a great thing for builders to use and incorporate in there builds, now that I really think about it this is could be a great and major change to building in many ways. Although leads are expensive because they use slime which would be a rather big obstacle to using these to make something big like a large bridge within survival, I can see this working out great.

I don't see why someone would need to build a big suspension bridge in survival
Aren't leads treated as entities when they're attached to mobs? If they are, letting players spam leads on builds would probably lead (no pun intended) to a lot of server lag. It'd look pretty cool for builds if they wouldn't stop rendering from a certain distance.
Its not that they need to, its that they can make a suspension bridge because it would look nicer, for example it would look nicer to use a suspension bridge to connect two mountains because to some it may look better. A lot of people have enough to do random crap on survival so I'm sure people would make them.

As with quite a few threads, I don't see a reason why this isn't a thing. There is no downside to it.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
We could finally build proper suspension bridges.
