As a builder it always annoys me that the thinnest you can get for a block is a slab, so I thought, what if you have a literal half-slab! to craft you would simply replace the blocks in the slab recipe with slabs, in other words you use 3 slabs instead of 3 blocks. These are a quarter of a block thick, and 4 are required to fill a whole block space. You would also be able to place them on any level of the block, meaning that is is not restricted to being on the bottom, like snow layers.
If anyone can post this to the minecraft suggestions subreddit page that would be nice, because I don't have enough comment karma, So I can't post.
I wouldn't mind seeing this added, though I would rather have horizontal slabs first. And to counter the argument that they wouldn't be minecraft-y enough, we already have snow that can be placed in a way that makes it a 1/16 block, and other blocks that would be around the same width as a half-slab or thinner, such as fences, panes, and iron bars.

Please not.
Minecraft is supposed to be a blocky game, that's the whole aesthetic. And stairs and slabs are just not-cubical enough to look different, without looking out of place. If you go further than that, and add these quarter slabs, I feel like it would just become too smooth, Minecraft would lose it's blocky aesthetic.
Well, Maybe.
But 'half-half' Slabs could be useful in many ways, Even if Minecraft is a blocky game. I don't feel like this would ruin the game that much, And could be quite the useful 'block' for builders.

Like people have already said, you can have snow 1/16 of a block thick, and this would allow for nicer aesthetics, plus the fact that sometimes, with only slabs and stairs the look is too blocky, which is why this would be nice. also it would be great for thin layers and the tops of tables.
But I think they could add sideways slabs and stairs... can help in structure patterns and what not
I don't think sideways stairs and slabs will ever be added is because notch didn't want them, though now that he is gone, maybe the developers will add them.
When I first saw this, I thought of snow. But I'm going to say no for the same reason I say no to vertical slabs: we don't have the space for them right now.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
