I have been trying to find a way to make an auto-mining cobblestone generator, and so I came here
I'm hoping a block can be added that will mine the block directly in front of it (the face that mines will be facing you when you place the block)
crafted with an iron pick in the middle, redstone below it, and the other 7 slots are cobblestone
it must be powered with redstone (NOT a redstone clock), and the blocks mined will fall to the ground, and will have to be either picked up by the player or collected with hoppers, give it a face too, like the dropper, dispenser, and observer block!!!!
I hate running out of cobble (need it a TON, it's the block that has the most items crafted from it, and i use the blocks it crafts for building), and want to be doing something else while I'm AFK mining cobble
So you're just chilling somewhere while some machines is mining all them diamonds for you? I don't think I need to explain why that's biblically unbalanced. No support.

The Unofficial Suggestion Guide - Everything you need to know to not make goofy mistakes in a suggestion! Honestly though, you should really go there.
If you'd like something automatic why not checkout some Technic or FTB modpacks? Or even just add something like IC2 to your client. I don't ever think Mojang will add anything of such nature.
"Hating" is not the same as "criticism." I do agree with them, though. Allow me to explain:
You want the recipe to be as follows:
That's a little more expensive than a dispenser, but iron is actually very easy to get if you put time into it. And dispensers are fairly balanced- dropping items but firing projectiles, very visible in a lit room. This isn't very balanced- breaking blocks instantly and dropping them? It'd have to work with all blocks since you can actually destroy anything except bedrock/barriers with an iron pickaxe if you put time into it. (Don't say "not obsidian" because I have punched obsidian until it broke one time.)
Doesn't work with a redstone clock? We'd have to change redstone so it'd work, because at the moment everything works in a redstone clock—Observer included. Anyways, that'd still be unbalanced you break anything instantly. Not to mention it's very easy to just send a pulse through the cobblestone and into the Auto Miner
Once you get to the point where your cobblestone generators can keep up with the Auto Miners, chances are you'll be at the point where they're just... obsolete. All of our current redstone components can be very hard to nullify, even cauldrons since we can change their signal strength and push them with pistons, which would definitely make this even more of an oddity.
The best way to balance this is by adding one of these two conditions, or both to truly balance it.
Block breaking time. The biggest issue is that it can break everything but bedrock and drop it instantly. A simple fix would be to add a delay based on the hardness of the material—not too short as to unbalance it, but not too long as to make it obsolete.
Fuel required. It would need to be able to be powered via a redstone clock without reworking redstone. It working forever with a redstone clock would severely unbalance it. A fix would be to force the player to fuel it every once in awhile, either using coal (8 blocks), coal blocks (80 blocks), or lava buckets (100 blocks). The Auto Miner would be able to have fuel inserted via hoppers to allow automatic farms, but forcing you to keep them powered with fuel so they don't turn off.
2. It takes the same amount of time to break the block as the tool used for crafting it would take to break them and the tool would need to be replaced
3. It requires fuel, not Redstone (fuel would allow for mining as many blocks as that fuel can smelt, so Coal would break 8 blocks)
That prevents instant breaking of blocks, would make it useless in most things other than in a cobblestone generator or maybe a tree farm, neither of which are unbalanced to have automated in my opinion, considering how easy it is to obtain large amounts of those anyways. This just removes the tedium.

We aren't hating. It is called criticism, giving our opinions and thoughts on the idea. A hate comment would be: "Yeah your ideas are terrible, get of the forum n00b."
But why would a block that's only useful for automatic farms be added by a development team that hates automatic farms? Mojang is known for trying to disable automatic farms.
For unlimited experience and items that are abundantly more useful than Cobblestone or Wood, sure. Mob grinders mean unlimited free Gold, Bows, Arrows, Iron, Swords, Armor, Bones, Gunpowder, Ender Pearls, Slimeballs, and a whole bunch of other things. This would allow you to get two items that are already simple to amass in large quantities with no risk. They are just tedious to do so.
Besides, what Mojang is known for or what they want isn't relevant to this section. This section is for people posting what they want to see in Minecraft and that shouldn't be restricted to what Mojang would be likely to add. If it was, the whole section wouldn't even need to exist because Mojang doesn't look here anyways. This section is purely about having fun and talking about ideas for Minecraft, but far too many people treat this section like if there are X too many ideas here that aren't perfectly balanced or loved by everyone, Mojang will shut down Minecraft development forever. As long as rules aren't being broken ideas don't need to be flawless.

It mines the block in front of it, you'd need something placing/pushing those diamonds into place, it's not a quarry
it's more for automatic cobble farms

I've had to break through 2 obsidian with my fists...
not fun
change the cobble to obsidian, and the pickaxe to diamond if you wish, but it's already a decent price for a block that only breaks the block in front of it

Do we honestly need an auto-mining cobble farm? For one of the easiest blocks you can get? The game runs more on a do-it-yourself type of playstyle, which sensibly works very well and for good reasons. I could've sworn there was a specific tweet explaining why Mojang didn't want automated things.

Isn't a redstone clock considered redstone too? So how will the block be powered by redstone but by redstone clocks?
Other than that, good idea!
Aren't you supposed to do things yourself, not let some automatic machine do it for you? Isn't that unbalanced like crazy?
I don't support this.

yeah, but only some of the blocks broken are dropped, the ones that do destroyed by the next TNT

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I think the idea is fine as long as:
1. It cannot be pushed by Pistons
2. It takes the same amount of time to break the block as the tool used for crafting it would take to break them and the tool would need to be replaced
3. It requires fuel, not Redstone (fuel would allow for mining as many blocks as that fuel can smelt, so Coal would break 8 blocks)

minign machines?
you mean "mining", my guess
it only mines the block in front of it, it won't act like a quarry from, what is it... Buildcraft?
it's for automating cobblestone generators...
and if every suggestion made it into the game, the game would take up every computer's storage
