The Dimmer is a redstone-activated light source. In Minecraft, redstone signal strength goes from 0-15, and light levels go from 0-15. When powered, the Dimmer takes the redstone strength and emits a corresponding light level. For example, if you feed it a redstone strength of 4, it will emit a light level of 4.
This can be used for adjustable light mechanisms or just to better control the use of light in an area.
This is incredibly useful, though I would change the name, as "dimmer" sounds like a block that reduces surrounding light level. Perhaps "adjustable lamp" or something like that.

Anyway, I Support.
I would rather have the name be short and sweet, though I'm not entirely satisfied with it either. Thanks for your support.
Sounds great, but the crafting could maybe be simplified. Maybe it can be crafted the same way as a redstone lamp, but with redstone on the corners?
I suppose I was trying to make it consistent with other semi-complex redstone mechanisms, such as the daylight sensor, comparator, and observer. But you're right, it could be simplified. Maybe instead of redstone in the corners it could be quartz? Basically the same recipe as I have except glowstone instead of a lamp. What do you think?

I like the idea but not the recipe. I think we could use black stained glass instead, 1 light per black stained glass is removed so a maximum of 8 reduction in light. The correct term would be lumens but MC doesn't use it, so I won't.

I am making it so you can exactly control light, so 'maximum reductions' based on things in the recipe don't make sense.
perhaps the recipe could be tweaked so there's glowstone in the middle, redstone on the 4 sides, and quartz pieces in the corners, basically a close relative to crafting a daylight sensor since I believe the quartz is supposed to be the light detecting item.

I would actually like to see the glowstone lamp take on this feature instead. It's already a redstone light emitting block that could use this light strength principle.

Instead of introducing a block with these mechanics, we should introduce these mechanic to the Redstone Lamp, due to its apt name and purpose.
As a matter of fact, I think that all light source dependent on redstone should function like this: No need for a new block.
I could make an argument about how one is simple and the other is more complex and that's why they should be different blocks, to make things easier when necessary. Perhaps making it just part of redstone lamps would be better, but at the moment I don't think so, and have no reason to change the suggestion. You can make that suggestion yourself if you wish.
So this is pretty much an all-in-one light source? Seems a bit much but I'd probably use it. The title had me assume you were suggesting a new technical block that subtracts light.

Is there some other simple word for an adjustable-light block?

Great idea. But it needs one thing. A light receptacle to translate the light levels back into redstone strength. Not to be confused with daylight sensors.

If you wish to make that suggestion, I welcome you to do so, but I don't believe that belongs in this suggestion. Thanks nonetheless.

wouldnt a daylight sensor do almost the exact same thing ?

It is crafted like this:

this is basically what i think we need, thoughit would be cool if this could be implemented into the redstone lamp itself, but anyway

No. Daylight sensors detect the time of day, as light receptacles detect light levels emitted from things like torches and active redstone lamps.
