I lagged once... with 400ms. And a creeper died. I reached my location and found my stuff... But just right before i was about to pick up my really rare expensive stuff + my fortune 3 efficiency 4 diamond pickaxe. My stuff went *POOF* and disapeared... What is this?? ;'(
yeah but at least just increase the time... 5 minutes is not enough. At least 15 minutes enough time to retrieve items. 5 minutes, by the time i get there... its all gone.
Considering the 5 minute timer doesn't trigger until the items are loaded, I'd say it's more than enough. The timer doesn't start until you get close to your items, so you just need to retrace your steps.
More than 90% of the time that will work easily. If you don't remember exactly where you died, then that should still be enough time to search if you remember the general area. If you don't remember where you died at all... Well this wouldn't really help.
I agree with others that it is necessary to keep this to prevent lag. Plus since the timer only counts when the chunk is loaded it is plenty of time in most situations. And if you really think it is unfair there is a gamerule to prevent dropping items on death.

So let's change something in the game for everyone just because Minerium had a bad experience? That's pretty much a penalty for dying and losing your stuff.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
Another one of these "Remove dying consequences" threads. Nope. No support. It adds challenge to the game. Making items magically stay there for multiple in-game days is UNREALISTIC and takes the challenge away from the game.

I don't even play Minecraft much anymore yet here I am on the Minecraft forums for some reason...
If you don't wanna lose items, just use /gamerule keepInventory true already. Adding more time or remove despawn of items means no punishment for dying, plus what if you never find it? the game will always have to keep its data there, plus any other item that drops naturally would also create lag, which means by the time a day in minecraft has passed, your game might crash because of item lag, especially if creepers decide to explode more often than usual
If you hate the anything despawn (mobs, items) feature, then suggest a noDespawn feature, but removing the despawn feature outright like this will cause enormous lag, plus it would be pretty hard to throw away trash.
If you set your render distance to 2 chunks you need to be within 32 blocks of an item (only along the x/z axes, not up/down, in which case the distance is effectively infinite) for it to be loaded and despawn; as a bonus, hostile mob spawning is broken on render distances below 10 chunks, worsening as it is reduced, so hostile mobs would be less of a problem (time spent fighting mobs means less time spent searching). This effectively gives you more time to find the items since if you were playing with 32 chunk (512 block) render distance then you have to spend at least 2 minutes just walking (in a straight line with no obstructions) to reach the spot you died.
(I once tried this myself, though older versions, before 1.7.4, always loaded 10 chunks server-side regardless of render distance and I didn't realize that at the time so it didn't work too well)
Item despawn is normal, if you dont want to lose items, stash em away in chests or make trips back to base. This has always been a challange for survival and its a pretty neat aspect if you ask me.

Makes it more punishing to die, and removes the lag that thousands of dropped items would create.

This does not have my support, as this stupid item despawn thing exists for balance and utility.

It happaned again, I went to get my stuff. I found my stuff in a huge pile and it all disapeared just 3 blocks away from me.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

There's no need to add anything to the game to keep from losing things when you die.
/gamerule keepInventory true
will let you keep your inventory when you die.
Just testing.
