In Minecraft we have 3 different types of magic: Enchanting, Brewing, and (technically)Golems.
I suggest a fourth type: Rituals.
Enchanting is based on strengthening items
Brewing is based on making potions.
Golems are based on creating mobs using blocks.
Rituals will be based on using blocks to create an area of a desired effect. One example is that you could make the blocks around the ritual area unbreakable. These rituals cannot affect their own space so to undo a ritual, you must break it.
So what is used mainly is an Altar Block that is placed in the middle of the ritual space. Then you place pillars made of any block you want but the rarity of said block will decide the radius of the effect. Then on the Altar Block you would place an item that will ultimately decide what effect will occur and the number of said item will decide the duration of the effect. Also it has to be an item, not a block or a weapon.
A= altar block
P= pillars(3 blocks high)
S= empty space
{P}{S}{P}{S}{P}
{S}{S}{S}{S}{S}
{P}{S}{A}{S}{P}
{S}{S}{S}{S}{S}
{P}{S}{P}{S}{P}
How to make an Altar block. It's very cheap, which sounds broken using the altar itself is very resource heavy.
G= Any Glass Block/Pane, the color and type will change the appearance.
O= Obsidian.
W= Any Wool, the color will also change the appearance.
{G}{G}{G}
{W}{O}{W}
{O}{O}{O}
Glass Blocks create the appearance of a crystal ball, Panes give the appearance of a display case. The color of the glass of course changes the color of the crystal ball/display case. Wool forms a table cloth that changes to the color of the wool itself. The item inside the Altar will appear in the glass part of it.
Now the Pillars. You would need a total of 27 blocks, they must be made using "Brick" Blocks, and each have different tiers.
Tier 1: Stone Brick: Radius of 3 blocks around Ritual area.
Tier 2: Nether Brick: Radius of 6 blocks around Ritual area.
Tier 3: Endstone Brick: Radius of 12 blocks around Ritual area.
These effects will apply from bedrock to skylimit.
Its kind of like of beacon in nature but it doesn't produce potion effects. It provides varying effects depending on the item itself. How the Altar works can seen like a furnace or brewing stand, the item is eaten up by the Altar and fills up a bar that will go down over time until it's refilled. One item should last about 30 seconds(this is subject for change if too long or not long enough).
-Snowballs will cause it to snow.
-Bone Meal will cause everything to grow twice as fast.
-Chorus Fruit will stop the ability to teleport in that area.
-Slime Balls will turn that area into a slime spawning chunk.
-Blaze Powder will cause potions to brew faster.
-Magma Cream will cause lava to move faster as if it was in the Nether. Even faster if in the Nether.
-Blaze Rod will cause fire to spread faster.
-Fire Charge, fire deals double damage.
-Gold Nuggets will increase the chances of lighting to strike during a rain storm.
-Rotten Flesh, rate of hunger decreases.
-Spider Eyes, poison becomes nullified.
-Book increases chance of stronger/rarer enchantments.
-Dye, sheep that spawn will get the color of the dye.
-Feather slows descent of all entity's in area.
-Paper will increase the chance of multiple enchantments.
-Nether Quartz, all redstone in the area will be completely deactivated.
-Lapis Lazuli cause xp to drop more.
-Flint, iron based items/blocks will ignite entities on fire when touched.
-Prismarine Shard, Blocks(Only blocks) gain a boost in durability but doesn't give you mining fatigue, for combat purposes.
-Prismarine Crystals, everytime you kill a mob you will be healed two hearts.
-Rabbit Hide, rabbits will spawn in that area.(Great chance of spawning The Killer Bunny)
-Glowstone Dust, that area will be filled with light.
-String, bows will be unable to shoot.
-Sugar, food eaten will give you Speed 1.
-Clock- Cause time to switch between day/night depending on the current time.
-Compass- Returns all players within the area to return to their spawn point/bed.
-Rabbits Foot- Increase the luck of all players in the area.
-Water Bottle- Starts rain.
Note: Some items will have one off effects like the Clock and Compass. Well they're the only ones with one off effects but when used they will fill the bar still and this acts as a cool down so you can't spam the Clock and possibly kill the world. Or use the Compass to create an area that nobody can enter for a while.
Questions for you(I'm indecisive): Instead of the type of block used to make the Pillar deciding the radius should instead adding another ring of pillars will extend the radius? Also instead of brick blocks, maybe the Pillars should be made of actual Quartz pillars? It would give them more purpose then decoration. Or should they be an entirely new block in general?
I'm glad to see a magic thread that isn't boring, dopey spells that just copy what enchantments and potions do. I'm not crazy about this, but it does sound interesting. Moderate support. You should really give us more to go on.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
Hmm, I kinda like this. At least, its better balanced than most are, and when I saw you talk about rituals, I was afraid you were going to be calling down meteors or lightning or something. But this seems lots better. Just keep adding more things that it might do! Obsidian might make it harder to break the blocks in the radius. Blaze powder might allow all the blocks to burn.
How DO you make the alter block? That's important.

This seems like a great idea, but could use more detailed descriptions of each item and its effect, as well as radius and strength. A detailed picture could also be used as a diagram of how it will be built. One extra is maybe a rare broken ritual area spawning near witch huts in swamp biomes. Perhaps witches were trying to figure out how rituals work, failed and went back to their hut to make more potions.

You've got something here. This sounds like it has potential, although I can't quite put my finger on what it needs right now. I kinda like the idea of being able to alter the weather using such rituals.
It's a little vague, but unique and not overpowered or unnecessary (like most magic suggestions :P)
I love that idea, just not sure if it belongs in a mod or in vanilla.
I like that its not stupid cheesy blow-up-the-whole-dang-world crap that people usually suggest, but it seems a bit over the top. maybe if you could use beacons to produce the desired effect by putting the material in instead of making a fancy altar thing?
Fire charge could set mobs in the area on fire, including players. I really like this suggestion, although with that title I was expecting something a bit less awesome as this is =P Support
You mention the block rarity for pillars determines radius, do you have stats for the blocks and the radius for each type? Also is the radius vertical as well or does it go from bedrock to height limit?
The concept is solid, but I need some more information before deciding if I like it.

I mean if you know their original spawn point then I guess you could set a trap like a pit where they spawn on a single block over it and are trapped forever but even then that requires a lot of prep work and it would just be easier to destroy the other players bed instead of going through the trouble of a ritual. But yeah I don't see how it can be really be abused.
I thought I'd mention that we do have a fourth and fifth forms of magic in the game: teleportation via chorus fruit and ender pearls (plus endermen), as well as portals. Otherwise, tldr.
Not forever, these effects last only a certain period of time depending on how many of that item you have. The unbreakable effect doesn't work on the ritual space itself so unless they hold themselves up in a room with the altar, it should be easy to take care of. Using it to trap someone in their house would be easy but what then? They're in their house with all their weapons and valuables. It would be a waste to not use the ritual on your own house.

This sounds cool!
some of these sounds a bit op, but I think it's fine...
my only disagree is the compass reset spawns... That's really bad XD what if on a server they set a spawn point and disabled beds or something? Then the server spawn would be broken XD Also what if people's houses are 1000 blocks away from their original spawn? XD Maybe instead of resetting, it could set the spawn to players who walk in to the area? Or disable beds in that spot?

Hello I'm you're friendly neighborhood Piggy! I'm not very active on the forums but when i'm on i like to help people and look at suggestions.
I picked specific types of items i.e. Iron and Gold because Flint and Steel create fire so it makes sense that Flint Magic would enhance Iron and Gold Nuggets drop from Zombie Pigmen which can be created with Lightning(This reason is a bit out there but I wanted a connection to Zombie Pigmen).
