So, I like making Redstone traps, even though I'm not very good at it. But recently, I've noticed a couple things that are just really hard for me to get around. For some traps, I want a specific gap or something to remain open for a couple seconds, or only for a split second. Say, if a player steps on a tripwire, it is supposed to leave the roof open for long enough to pour some lava on them. But a tripwire only lasts for a moment, while the gap needs to stay open for long enough for the lava to flow.
Another example is pressure plates, and buttons. They generally last much too long for some things.
Now, maybe there is a way to lengthen or shorten a signal already. But I have no clue how to do it. And this seems a lot simpiler
The Redstone Lengthener:
A pretty simple idea overall, the Lengthener recieves a signal, then releases a signal of the same strength for however long it has been set for.
The recipe is the exact same as a comparator, except the redstone dust is replaced with a redstone block.
When placing, it has two switches. Right clicking it only moves one switch, changing the length by one tick. Moving it ten ticks over will reset the first switch and move the second switch, for a count of ten. You can repeat this process for up to 50 ticks before the whole thing resets.
(if there is a better way to count that out, please tell me :D)
When it receives the signal, it will emit a signal of the same strength for the same amount of time as the amount of ticks it has loaded on its switches.
Tell me what you think!

I think "Extender" sounds better, as "Lengthener" sounds a bit childish.
I'm not that good with redstone either, but can't a repeater already do this?

It can repeat the signal with a delay, but there isn't an easy way to set a Redstone signal for a set number of ticks. The easiest way I can think of would be it triggering a chain of repeaters, each one with 1 more tick of delay all going to the same output. I'm sure there is an easier way though.
The idea is okay but with the current method it would require a Block Entity. Normal blocks can only have 16 states, and this needs 4 for direction. Then you need two for powered/unpowered. That leaves 10 for the timer count unless I am mistaken. However you could use another 2 as a toggle between a tick timer and a second timer, which gives you 8 remaining states, so it set the timer to anywhere from 1-8 ticks or 1-8 seconds.

Um.... repeaters? I mean if one doesn't work for you, then just set a chain of them and see how many you need so it lasts enough time.
That delays the signal but doesn't change it's length. The only way to do that now would be a monostable circuit into this:
- - - - output
^ ^ ^ ^
1 2 3 4
- - - - input
where ^ is a repeater and the number is the delay and - is redstone. This is large and may be hard to fit into a build.
There are actually already plenty of ways of creating pulse extenders. While this idea would compact things, it doesn't compact anything that needs to be compacted. If you can find a redstone build that simply can't be built without a single-block pulse extender, I'll reconsider, but until then, No Support.

Ooooh, those limited block states are annoying. Would it still work if it were for 10 ticks only, and you would have to use five to extend it to 50?
I'm a bit confused on what you mean by the second one... Can you have the switches be separate from each other for blockstates?
Oh wait no I see what you mean. I think. Would 10 ticks be better or 8 ticks/8 seconds? I like the idea of a seconds timer too, (for us redstone noobs who just want some seconds ) rather than just ticks, but a lot of the time redstone seems like it will only work if it is all about ticks.

Yeah, that seems to be a tedious and space-consuming way to do it :/

Well, this would also be to shorten a signal, from someone standing on a pressure plate for a long time, to 1 tick, if thats what you want, because you want a fast short signal.
I did look up redstone pulse extenders, and there are quite a few. But most of the ones that last for any real period of time take lots of hoppers and pistons and stuff, and just overall a ton of redstone knowledge. Which makes sense for some more complicated redstone things, but this seems like such a simple thing... :/

What you're looking for in the first paragraph is a pulse limiter, and there are already plenty of designs out there for that. For the second, yes it is a simple thing, and that's precisely the reason why this is a bad suggestion. Repeaters output a signal with a delay, boost the strength of the input they receive in the back to 15 regardless of its original level, accept input from redstone in their sides to lock their state, and don't take input from circuitry on other levels so they can act as a buffer. Comparators add or subtract input strength values between their back and side inputs, and can provide output based on block data next to their input. Your suggestion only changes the length of a pulse, without any additional functionality to make it worthwhile. It simply serves no purpose beyond that, and is better suited as a mod than as a part of the base game.
Well, if the issue is that it only has one use at the moment, I can certainly come up with a bunch more that are related to what it does That's probably actually a good idea, too, so more things are put to use in one, rather than a bunch of items that each do something.
Here are a few ideas, tell me what you think
-Since it sends the signal instantly, we could make it boost the signal as well and have it be a way to instantly (if a bit more expensively) get a signal from A to B
-A signal into the side of it will move the tick/second up one, to make a way for automatic timers.clock things.

I dont want to be a jerk and beat a dead horse here, but this suggestion is pretty bad. I mean, there are ways to extend or shorten a signal and they are quite compact, it takes a 2x1 block area to make a monostable circut (shortener) and a 3x2 block area to make an extender. I feel like you just need to go to youtube instead of adding another block.
Redstone is supposed to be complicated, it is a skill that takes time to master. If you want to do things that are moderately difficult then it will take a decent amount of effort. Keep working towards it.
I'm not quite sure why you both didn't want to beat a dead horse but also sorta did, but OK
I did go on YT and tutorials and such, and I guess its my opinion overall here, but something as simple as lengthening a signal would seem simple to me, but generally to do it for any sort of length it requires hoppers and pistons and a whole lotta room. I mean, I can get why a door, or an escalator, or a clock, or a LED light screen made from Redstone Lamps might be complicated. This just seemed like such a simple thing to take so much room to do. Like, if there weren't comparators, I'm sure people would have found more ways to delay and extend a signal, but it was something simple that added a lot of depth and compactness.
Of course, I might be the only one that thinks extending a signal time should be simple.

I support this suggestion since it will act like the real life copper wire unlike the old style of redstone. Of course, I would like it since this idea supports the longest redstone cable connection.
