I suggest crafting Ghast tears a Shulker Drop (G) with slime blocks (S)

to create a levitating or mobile block, this block can be powered by redstone and would move in the direction it was oriented
but could be changed to create moving elevators, vehicles, ships that would move the blocks attached to them with slime blocks. up to the natural limit of the blocks, movement stops if obstructed, movement in multiple directions would require multiple blocks and a complicated system of powering each one that the players themselves would be charged with figuring out.
Part of the challenge would be keeping the restone signal going as the block moves.
for an elevator this would be simple creating a stack of charged blocks that can be turned on and off,
speed: speed would have to be a constant thing unless varied by how strong the redstone signal is or by the number of mobile blocks working together, other people may have better ideas on how speed variations could work.
direction: direction would be based on the 6 possible facings of the block itself, the Orientation of up would meqn the block would move up when powered, NESW directions would act the same as well as down.
When not powered the block would stop and maintain its position.
There are hints in 1.10 that redstone wont be broken as easily, allowing blocks to move and preserve the redstone "wire" as well as the ability to wire up a wall would be very helpful in making such a block useful but I think there are very creative individuals who could make great use of such a block without the need for additional rules around redstone implementation. as with everything else, improvements to the way redstone can be implemented would make the game more dynamic without breaking the balance.
I like the idea of a levitation block, but not sure if this is quite the route to go. And the recipe? Uhm, no.
Hmm... placed beside a powered wall and oriented upward it would float to the top of the wall. I'd suggest that it also be a gravity affected block so you wouldn't need two to go up and down. Power could be pulsed on the way down for a slow descent. Except for the recipe, yeah, I'll support this.
I think 1 Ghast tear and one slimeball and maybe a wool block would be a more reasonable recipe.
All of that sounds like a pure upgrade from pistons...

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
Doesn't contribute to discussion or help op in any way.
Except for the fact that it actually does. Let me rephrase what I said then. These floating blocks sound overpowered as they can easily replace pistons and other redstone circuitry.

Because pistons and some redstone stuff won't be needed if a block can just fly on its own somewhere.

I do not support this idea. The moving block will create lots of more lag with the checks determining what direction the block will go in and the main functionality of the block combined.

Lag? It would create no more lag than existing transport systems (like slime-block piston shuffle cars, piston elevators, etc.)
How exactly is this op? You would need 20,000 redstone torches to travel a few chunks.
Torch, line of redstone dust, repeat. A handful of torches and a redstone dust per block, and then place your levi-block beside the redstone. Horizontally, it's a glorified minecart, but this could go straight up or down using staggered glowstone with redstone on top or torch towers. You do seem to like your big exaggerated numbers though. I'm also thinking power sources could be connected using slime blocks. Now if we could only find a way to make the finished product look like a Delorian.
Did you even read the thread? It needs a constant redstone signal to work
I was aware of that from the start. All it takes is one little lever or button to get this block going, and the block just freely goes in one direction with no middleman redstone objects or circuits to guide it like most contraptions require.

But when you move the redstone signal stops. Also specify how direction and speed would be determined.

NO SUPPORT
This would NOT be balanced, and it has a bit of lack of detail. Although, if it got some balancing, I would support.

Support my suggestions. Make the game better!
OHHH I thought that when powered, it would move indefinitely up!
So, SUPPORT
And yes you are correct, the Shulker would be the more obvious source for the drop to craft this block.
I would totally use this! Full support
Maybe make it so that you could dye it if it uses wool.

None ATM
This makes so much sense, I'm surprised that it's not already implemented.
Support.

How would this replace circuity and pistons?
