So you've been playing minecraft, and you finally beat the ender dragon.. but you still have to beat the wither. So when you beat the wither and obtain the nether star, there's only one path to take, create a beacon. Don't get me wrong, the beacon is a powerful block, and worth fighting the wither over, but there are more opportunities to give the star more recipes.
Since the 1.9 update is centered around combat, I've thought of an idea as a new weapon that can be crafted with the nether star. It's called the "Prismarine Star". It'd be crafted using 4 prismarine shards surrounding a nether star.
It'd be thrown like a boomerang, with a throw radius of 5-8 blocks, depending on the amount of time it's been charged for. Charges have been used in minecraft before, on bows and horses, but the Prismarine Star's charge works a bit differently. There would be a bar shown for the amount it's been charged above the experience bar, and it looks identical to it. The star will have to be charged for around 1 second minimum. This means that if the right click button is released before 1 second, nothing will happen. But 1 second seems like a bit of wait time to throw it, so during charge time, you will be able to move at full speed, just like the horse.
The Prismarine Star goes at a speed of 32m/s (bow is around 53m/s). At the full distance of 8 blocks thrown, it'll return in half a second. Each time you throw a star, it will return after it hits the throw radius, or if it hits an enemy or block. This means that it will only hit one enemy, rather than piercing through as many as possible, with the one exception of if it hits an enemy or block on the way back. If this happens, then it will hit the enemy, and damage it, and go through it to return to you. The same goes for blocks, if it hits a block on the way back, it'll just go through it and return to the player. (If you hit an enemy with the full damage possible, then hit another enemy on its way back, it will not do full damage to the second enemy. The charge will stay at its designated attack damage until the radius is reached, and will decrease gradually on the way back.)
But how much damage does the star do? The Prismarine Star would do 11 damage at the highest, or 5.5 hearts. 1 more damage than the highest the bow can do. The chances of doing this amount of damage is the same as the bow as well, 1/5 chance at full charge. At the lowest, the boomerang will do 4 damage, an improvement from the bow, since the lowest the bow will do is 1, or a half heart. The star can be enchanted with Sharpness, Unbreaking, Knockback, Looting, and a new enchantment that'd be unique to the Prismarine Star, Range. There would be 2 levels of range enchantments, each increasing the range by 1 block. With a level 2 enchantment, the largest throwing radius possible is 10 blocks. The charge bar wouldn't be affected by this enchantment. Rather than the bar growing, the radius numbers are shifted down, so that the lowest radius with the enchantment is 7. The Range enchantment also doesn't affect the air time. This means that with an increase in range, there will be a small increase in speed, to keep the air time as it is. The default knockback of this weapon will be 1 block at the lowest, 2 at the highest, depending on how much damage was dealt. The knockback enchantment will increase the knockback by 1 block per level. With maximum level 2 Knockback, the highest is 4 blocks of knockback.
The star has the durability of a diamond sword.
The Prismarine Star also opens up the possibility of new redstone contraptions. If you place a star into a dispenser and trigger it, the star can fly out, run its course, and then return to the dispenser. The distance would be controlled by the signal strength of the redstone. This means that when fired from a dispenser, it can go up to 15 blocks with full signal strength, and one with least. The strength of the star itself would stretch, so rather than 11 hearts at most for 8 blocks, it's 11 hearts at most for 15 blocks. Yes, the stars can be thrown farther in a dispenser than it can in hand, but it's at the expense of having to set up a dispenser in the first place. The idea of using the Prismarine Stars in dispensers can be used to defend your base, effectively grind mobs, or create other redstone contraptions!
So what makes the Prismarine Star better than the bow? They're both range weapons, but the bow is less costly.
Reasons that the Prismarine Star is worth killing the wither over:
-You can run while charging this weapon
-It can do a slightly better maximum damage
-It can do a highly better minimum damage
-Has a higher durability
-Uses durability rather than arrows AND durability
-It's possible to hit multiple enemies
-You don't have to pick it back up like with arrows, it returns like a boomerang
-Isn't affected by gravity
-More freedom and possibility with redstone than arrows
So there are big differences between the bow and the Prismarine Star. This weapon is an idea of how boomerangs could be implemented into the game. It also opens another reason to go through all the trouble through the Ocean Monument, other than aesthetic blocks and sponges.
For being a weapon that requires you to kill the WITHER , it sure is weak. It only marginally beats out the bow. I would expect a weapon that requires me to kill the strongest boss in the game to be much stronger. Then again, you managed to make it overpowered at the same time, with the 11 damage, and that's not even with potions or enchantments! Yes, it is stronger than the bow, but with a quick Power II enchantment, and the bow is already better. Yeah, you can hit multiple enemies (with the prismarine star), but it would require extremely precise aim.
Overall, it is marginally better than the bow, but not worth killing the wither over since with a few enchantments, the bow is already better. Most people would just stick with their bow and use that nether star for a beacon.
No support; still incredibly unbalanced.
My suggestion:It has the originality it needs with the Prismarine Star, but you need to give it a non-combat use. Change the use from combat-related to something else. Make it pretty useful too, since it requires you to kill the wither and defeat an ocean temple.

"...overpowered at the same time."
Either it's too weak or it's too strong, it can't be both. "with a few enchantments, the bow is already better". The star can get enchantments too, so that wasn't a really good point.

Either it's too weak or it's too strong, it can't be both. It's weak for requiring you to kill the strongest boss in the game, but it's OP for being able to 2-hit kill most mobs. "with a few enchantments, the bow is already better". The star can get enchantments too, so that wasn't a really good point. Actually, it is. The bow is much cheaper and easier to get, so you're better off enchanting a bow rather than killing the wither, conquering a very large dungeon, then enchanting a weapon that will only be marginally better than the bow.
Seriously? You complain of it being weak because you need to beat a boss, yet to strong for being able to 2-hit most mobs. You have basically cancelled out any chance of you ever agreeing with this idea. And your second point, you just listed why it should not be considered OP(though I still feel the durability should be lowered). Though I have to agree with it being only marginally better than a bow damagewise, since a bow can do 10 hearts unenchanted.
My feelings:
You will never get megabyte to agree with you on this idea, though he does make a valid point that it should do more for being a hard to get tool. Some of my ideas that would be unique for it to do are: bonemeal effect that costs durability, high looting chance, maybe a damage bonus when within range of a beacon, or maybe a chance to catch fish when thrown in water. These are oddball effects, but would give the star more purpose. I still feel the star should have less durability. And Broccoli_Monkey is right, you should have just edited your other post instead of making a new one. You have provided plenty of reasons why this is a better weapon than the bow though, but it mostly depends on how you play whether you use the bow for long range or the star for close range. PARTIAL SUPPORT, hard to get and doesn't really compete well with the bow as you seem to suggest(bow is long ranged, but star is much closer ranged), should probably have a little more to it.

I'm sure it's possible, but it would need major modifications.
The Prismarine Star may have a slightly higher base damage than the bow, but Sharpness is a good bit less damaging than Power is. At max Sharpness, the Star deals 16.25-17.25 damage; not enough to OHK pretty much every mob, unlike the bow can, and while you can kill a mob in one throw it's limited to a ten-block range; the bow, on the other hand, can go FAR farther. It can hit multiple mobs in one throw but linear groups of mobs that would make this feasible are rare and a sword would kill them all just as effectively. Plus, it has durability, which is really bad considering you had to grind on Wither Skeletons for a Nether Star. I dislike beacons, and I'd rather just make that since it's more permanent and because the Prismarine Star doesn't have much worth compared to the bow.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
AHA! 1.9: Axes are slower, and do more damage! Sound familiar? Yup, exactly what the Prismarine star was going to do. And what else? Remember when I said there would be a charge?? Hey! Guess what? Weapons do that now too! Ah but in all seriousness, I'm sure if I were to give this weapon thread another thought I'd figure out how to make it work. But I don't really care about it anymore....or really minecraft at all as a whole. I just recently found out that they've made these changes to weapons and to have a good laugh, I wanted to roast you.....but yeah the original post ideas are extremely outdated so don't quote me on my original post or even this post cause I won't give a sh*t really lol kbye
