Flower boxes would be constructed by placing wood in a standard boat pattern, with a piece of dirt in the middle block. Larger sizes could be made by including a flowerbox item as well. Adjacent flowerboxes of the same size will merge together like stairs.
Planters would come in a variety of shapes, but would otherwise follow the same crafting pattern style as flower boxes:
-barrel...wood in the left and right columns, wood along the bottom row, dirt in the remaining blocks. These would be placeable like signs placed on top of a block (ie, where you clicked, rather than centered in the block.
-tripod...wood in the shape of an X, dirt in the top block of the middle column. These would be placeable like signs placed on top of a block.
-slab...slab in lower corners, dirt in bottom middle block. These are dimensioned like chests (not quite a full block) but only have the height of a slab, and adjacent slab planters would merge.
Terraria would be crafted with 3 wood along the bottom row, three glass (pane or block) across the top, and up to 3 types of plants in the middle.
hanging baskets would be crafted with a bowl pattern (three wood arranged in a v), with 1 string in the top middle and 1 dirt in the center. Can only be placed on the bottom of a block.
rock gardens: 3 blocks of wood with any combination of stone blocks above (up to 6 varieties).
Water fountains: using water buckets, you would "draw" where you wanted the water to flow, filling in the remaining blocks with your basin material. Compatible shapes will be stitched together when adjacent to each other. The fountain would be placed facing the player (like pistons), but could only be placed on top of a block; stitching will still occur across elevation changes. Fountain blocks that are adjacent to a water source will be stitched to flow into said source.
Note: the above items can substitute stone and other materials for the containers instead of using wood. Additionally, can substitute sand, soul sand, or a dirt-alternate (podzol, mycelium, etc) for the dirt.
Allow the use of a hoe on a plant container to till the soil, allowing us to place growable crops in them.
Allow us to place plants in plant containers the way we can place signs on top faces of blocks (that is, the sign is placed where we clicked and the sign is turned to face the player). This would allow us to place multiple plants in one container, creating bouquets and other arrangements.
