I've been thinking about how we should have a few more metals or crafting items. Something that will be original to Minecraft and not make diamond seem like the only thing you need to survive.
My idea is for a metal called Infinium. It has a green ore and is found abundantly at 0-5 blocks from bedrock and would take 10 seconds to mine with any tool.
Heres are few images I pixel'd up:
When smelted, Infinium is a grayish metal with a green tint, as seen in the above images.
Here it is as an ingot:
Crafting uses:
Like any other metal, infinium can be used to make weapons and armor.
The armor would be different from the others. Infinium is an incredibly heavy metal, so it would slow down your player by a little, but provide complete protection (No hearts lost, only armor damage) until it wears off. It would have the same life span as diamond.
The same effects would go for tools and weapons, they would get the job done very fast, but last shorter than diamond tools.
Infinium Core:
What would make this metal different from the others would be the Infinium Core. An infinium core is a glass tube with infinium ore suspended inside. It resembles a sort of alien or magical device with many uses, but it takes a lot to make one. Infinium gives off an electrical charge as an ore, which can be used in place of redstone torches. The infinium core acts as a battery. It will supply continuous power to anything it is attached to or placed in. (Say a powered minecart, it would power it for 2-3 minecraft days.)
Crafting is as follows:
Unlike the image, this will craft 4 cores.
Infinium Core by itself:
Other Properties:
Since infinium is so heavy, it should have gravity. (This is optional. I personally dislike the idea because it would be difficult to build with, but it would give some originality to it.)
Infinium cores, when placed on a neutral mob, will cause it to follow you. Combining this with a saddle on pigs will allow you to control it instead of wandering aimlessly.
That's all I got...

Really nice idea, I like it, well balanced, i still don't know about the core, sounds interesting but I'm sure something more medieval can be created, maybe a infinium hourglass? Just saying to keep the atmosphere of the game.

True... I'll think on it some more and see what I could change it to. Technically if it was an hourglass, the sand would still have the electrical charge and carry out the same functions, but more fitting. What if we just say it's magical?
I say either get rid of the speed-reduction or get rid of the low life span. Because for being so rare, we shouldn't have so many cons. Like, I'd be happy to be moving like a turtle if it had a normal life-span. But for something that takes so long to mine and is so hard to find, it'd be a novelty at best. And then if you placed an Infinium block in the wrong spot? That'd take a long time to fix.

Blocks would have a shorter mining time than ore. And you're right, It should be normal life span.
I like this idea very much. I don't really care about the whole "spirit of the game" thing. I think that futuristic ideas would be cool, adding a feeling of progressing through the ages (we already have the wood age, stone age, and iron ages). I think this idea would be a great start to CHANGING the spirit of the game for the better.

I have no problem with futuristic things. It just depends on what KIND of future. Like, in the 50's, we imagined the future like the Jetsons (Flying cars, self-cleaning houses, meal-in-a-pill, etc.) In medieval times, the future, from what I know, wasn't really thought of. But we did still think of supernatural beings. So I think if futuristic items resembled alien technology (Still keeping a 50's-ish theme) I'd be mostly alright with it. As long as it was hard to get, like the Infinium battery.
i think it is to rare to be practical especially when it comes to mine carts because i can easily use a boost for that. i do like the armor ideas but only if it had special status effects

It is found at the bottom of the map, but in abundance, unlike the diamond, which is rarely found. The infinium armor absorbs all damage and does not take away hearts until it wears off, but it slows you down slightly.
I don't like the core idea and the time spent mining the ore, but I really love the idea of another type of metal; and the name is awesome too. Great job! Here have some approval
Love the idea and core, however not the time it takes. It would take forever and get boring to mine a pocket of 4. Also, we need sig to make sure all see this, especially . So to sum it all up:
Infinium cores, when placed on a neutral mob, will cause it to follow you. Combining this with a saddle on pigs will allow you to control it instead of wandering aimlessly.
Please explain the connection between a battery and controlling passive mobs?

I'm new to these forums, so I'm not quite sure what you meant by "sig the topic", but I looked at other people's signatures and assumed something like this:
Correct?
Also, sorry for the double post. I'm not sure if that is significant here, but it was for something important.

Agreed on all points.
I hereby render your argument invalid.:happy.gif:

I know about those batteries since long ago, but those were huge jars full of acid and metal, quite different from what we see in this idea.

So? Batteries=batteries.
