Cactus, a plant with very interesting mechanics but no reason to farm it. I recently saw a thread about cactus fencing (here's a link: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/suggestions/2222831-cactus-fence) and it made me realize just how useless cacti is. You can use it for traps (although it is hard to use efficiently in traps) and green dye. My idea aims to make cactus way more useful. Here's my ideas:
1. Spikes: By putting 1 cactus in your crafting table, you get 2 spikes. Spikes can be placed on blocks in any orientation. They deal 1 heart of damage and then disappear. They can be placed down by dispensers.
2. Sparkling Cactus Green: Crafted with 1 emerald and 1 cactus green, you get 1 sparkling cactus green. It can be brewed into an awkward potion to give you a potion of resistance.
3. Thornless Cactus: When you create spikes, you get a thornless cactus back (similar to when you create a cake, you get your buckets back). This cactus is a full block with no thorns and a white log-like texture in the middle of it. It can be placed in different orientations, like logs. It is simply for decorative purposes.
4. Corrupted Cactus: By planting a cactus on soul sand, it turns into a purple cactus called a corrupted cactus. It can be cooked to give you purple dye. It acts like a normal cactus, except gives you wither 1 instead of damaging you. Corrupted cactus can't be replanted, you have to grow cacti and convert them into corrupted cactus.
5. Corrupted Spikes: Corrupted cactus properties plus spike properties.

Sounds like a cool idea. I definitely agree that cactus should have more uses; it's pretty useless in game besides green dye which is in turn used pretty rarely. Some suggestions and clarifications:
1. For the spikes, I assume you mean they disappear after doing the 2 damage to a mob? And will they damage you? I assume they would, because it'd be pretty weird if they didn't (ooh hey I can just walk on the spikes I put down :D) <-- wouldn't happen IRL or in most games).
2. How long would the resistance potion last? I'd think it should last the same amount of time as regen potions (a fairly short time), as it's a very strong potion and would be pretty overpowered if it lasted an entire 8 minutes (or 1:30 or whatever if it was Resistance II). Also, emeralds are fairly easy to get once you find a village. Just expand it or make an artificial village, breed a bunch of guys until you find some with the really good trades (farming ones, especially pumpkins, paper ones), and you have loads of emerald pretty easily. Much easier than Ghast Tears, at least, and I think resistance is pretty on-par with regen. So, I think the recipe for sparkling recipes should be more expensive. Maybe some more emeralds, throw in some glowstone (it's sparkling!), possibly some redstone or even a diamond.
3. So if you break a corrupted cactus, it gives you a corrupted cactus, which you can't plant; correct?
This is pretty cool, it's a well thought out, interesting idea. I would add a much more detailed analysis on your idea but I can't find anything else to say other than how awesome this is.
Maybe make an unbreakable spike by reinforcing it with iron?
I personally feel that that would be slightly overpowered even with large amounts of iron, etc iron blocks, as it allows automated mob farms. <-- Much easier automation

I don't get you. How is automated mob farms overpowered and you imply that is an easier automation?
Support for you since this makes cactus have more uses than being useless together with the cactus fence. You can also make corrupted and thornless versions of the cactus fence too.

You see, now you have to get lava or something to kill the mobs automatically, I feel that having these spikes to automatically kill mobs is slightly overpowered as you can have automated mob farms. Like have a skeleton spawner above (dungeon), place spikes at the sides of the wall at the drop down area, with hoppers below, afk. That will feel too easy and modded survival (mods have that). So, I think OP wants the spikes to be one time use for a reason, so you can't automatically farm mobs.
A full set of iron armor gives you 60% resistance to damage, the resistance 2 stats effect gives you 40% resistance to damage. 100% resistance with iron armor + cheap potions? Sign me up!

Mob farms are automatic, even the traditional ones using lava unless it's an XP grinder. It's just the same as the traditional ones except you require a desert instead of just iron and lava. and it could be a great trap in many maps.

Feedback is appreciated. More things will be added as time goes by.
Nevertheless support!

I know i'd fiddle around with these uses if this idea was added, and all seem practical and balanced.
