Incense, in real life, is an aromatic blend of spices that is usually burned to produce a strong, relaxing, and warm scent. It is used in religious ceremonies in just about every religion out there, from Christianity to Buddhism. It is often thought to have spiritual powers, such as warding off evil spirits. It is also used in meditations. In the western world, it is most commonly found in stick-form, but can also be found as a powder, cone-shape, and resin. Most varieties slowly burn, doing so by the balance of oxidizers and resins that prevent it from smoldering instantly. Stick varieties (the kind I will be describing in the thread) are lit by setting the very tip aflame, then waiting until the end is a glowing orange before blowing the flame out.
What it would add to Minecraft
In-game, incense would be primarily used for aesthetic purposes. An Incense Stick would be placed on an incense burner, similar to a furnace, and burn for an extended period of time. This burning would provide no effects, and would merely result in a wispy, smoke particle effect. It would look more like a thin line than the regular puffs of smoke you see in Minecraft, and would rise higher before dying out. The particles would still be subject to block collision, and bounce if it hits something.
However, enchanting sticks of incense would add special effects to them. These effects would be largely ignorable, especially if used in an area outside your house or castle or whatever you live in. These effects are limited to a seven block radius around the burner with the incense, which limits their practicality unless used in large numbers. These effects instantly go away when the stick is done burning. Effects of the same type do not stack, meaning you cannot stand in the radius of two sticks with the same effect and have it double in strength.
Below are some examples of Incense effects:
-Ward I, II, III Each level of Ward would give a 10% chance of stopping an aggressive mob at the radius of it's effect. For example, if a zombie was charging me while I was next to a Ward stick, there is a chance that the zombie would stop as if there was a gap in front of it that it couldn't jump across.
-Fasting I, II Each level of Fasting would decrease hunger decay by 15%. Saturation would not be affected.
How to make it
Incense would be quite simple to make. The Incense Burner would be small, with a low profile, and hold the Incense Sticks vertically. It would be able to hold three incense sticks at the same time. It would be square in shape, and brown with a gray center, to portray the ash collector. An Idea of what I'm talking about.
Crafting the Incense Burner would look like this:
Incense Sticks are what you put in the holder to get it to burn. Placing them in any of the three open slots on an Incense Burner will cause it to immediately start burning. The crafting recipe would produce two sticks at a time, and look like this:
( Arrow represents a stick, Lava represents Frankincense, detailed below.)
Frankincense is what drops from the leaves of Boswellia trees, which would be found very VERY rarely in deserts and savannah. Frankincense would not replace Boswellia Saplings.
Endless Incense Sticks would be just like regular Incense Sticks, except they burn forever. Effects can NOT be added to these. They are for appearance only. They would be crafted like so:
(Red represents Netherrack, while the Arrow is an already-made incense stick. Placing an enchanted Incense Stick in the grid will not carry the enchantment to the Endless Incense Stick.)
Why it needs to be
All of this would result in living, more interesting interesting environments. Temples and houses of any kind and style would benefit, as incense has been used in real life for ages, in several cultures. Also, it would give a temporary and minor "home base advantage" to the player when they are around their house. It would have almost zero benefit in PvP, which would prevent it from being abused in servers and making the game less fun for everyone else. Also, the scarcity of Boswellia trees would make it a mid-level trading resource on servers, and farming would be semi-difficult and would yield little profit unless you have a huge farming operation.
But most of all, it's the cosmetic side of it that I find the most appealing.
Some details and comments.
I really, truly do hate the idea of having to add a whole new tree for some minor, cosmetic item. It seems like people would find the addition of a new tree for one little thing to be silly. But, there is no other way to add it without making no sense.
The Incense Burner's hitbox would be 0.33 X by 0.5 Y by 0.33 Z, with or without the sticks. When added to the burner, the sticks would appear to stick out from the Incense Burner, and would reach the top of the burner's hitbox. The player would be able to walk over the burner as if it wasn't there.
If enough people want some clarification on how I'm picturing this thing, I guess I could hop onto Blender and whip something up in a few minutes.
I checked the searchbar, and only a few people have mentioned Incense in Minecraft, and the only thread dedicated to implementing it was really badly made and made it super OP, so I believe this idea is pretty original.
If you hate this idea, please tell me why and don't just say that it's stupid. That doesn't promote conversation at all.If you like it, explain which part you like the most and why.
Also, the thread editor sucks. Like, holy crap it deletes most of what I write for no reason.
Great idea! May I put this in a mod? Also, there should be some other benefits. A few ideas for more enchantments are:
- Strength and Speed enchantments (SLIGHTLY increases strength and speed for 30 seconds, like beacons but MUCH weaker and longer lasting, but with a smaller radius.)
- Potency I, II and III (Increases burn duration)
- Purity (Makes negative potion effects run out twice as fast)
Also, Incense should be able to be carried in your hand, applying the effects only to you.
I agree with your idea about incense. You earn support!

Decent idea, although the enchantments are rather worthless. Ward is far less effective at stopping mobs than basic walls or a stone sword, and the range of Fasting is so short that you might as well stand still and prevent your hunger from draining altogether. I suppose the main point of using incense is for the decorative effects anyway, although if the enchantments are nigh useless you might as well not implement them.
Support anyway.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Thank you for your feedback.
I was thinking that another good enchantment would be something where every friendly mob, like tame wolves, villagers, and golems, slowly regenerate health when in it's radius. What are your thoughts on that one?
I made some quick concept art! I'll have it in the OP in a minute. NVM I'll just post it here.

Of course, it doesn't HAVE to look exactly like that, as that isn't the most attractive thing ever....

The regeneration effect seems much more useful than the others, although I personally wouldn't end up using it (wolves are far more fragile than the player is so I never use it, and I tend to keep villages safe by staying away from them at night).
On a random side-note, it'd be kind of interesting if villager priests would use incense to ward away zombies and heal villagers. I'd also personally make Warding incense give Slowness I to all undead mobs (except the Wither) even if Warding doesn't stop them in their tracks.

Yeah, I never thought about Villager Priests using them! That would be nice.
