About every Minecraft builder has at one point in time wished that stair and slab blocks werent limited to their two orientations. Even more players have wished for more stair and slab options. Since 1.8 is pretty much the "Change Everything" update, this is the perfect time to add this! This is what I suggest be changed/added:
Horizontal stair orientation (as opposed to the current vertical orientations)
Vertical standing slabs
Additional (preferrably variants of all blocks) types of slabs and stairs (e.g. wool slabs)
Comment below whether or not you would like this to be added to Minecraft. Thank you for reading!

Wouldn't having so many blocks take up a metric ton of item ID's? That's pretty much the reason why it isn't already in the game or perhaps they think players won't use them. That's two ID's for every block you are suggesting. You need to define what blocks are going to have slab and stair variants. Surely you don't mean every solid block in the game.
Horizontal stairs are actually not redundant. Not sure what I'd do with them but I'm all for more options, I don't see the harm.

Honestly, I think Mojang should implement a limited form of Microblocks that allow only up to what slabs and stairs can do (i.e. no covers, strips, etc.) but allowing for vertical slabs, sideways stairs, etc. I made a suggestion on that a while ago. I don't know how the Microblocks mod handles the data values, but it clearly works, even in modpacks with tons of blocks, like FTB.
Vertical slabs/sideways stairs, though, are definitely a redundant suggestion, though they're a good one. Sadly, Mojang said they won't add them even though they're leaving the current ones in. Support regardless.
@VampArcher Being as we are moving away from item ids in a numerical format, the sheer number of ids available as strings allows people to add a theoretically infinite number of blocks to MC (By infinite, I mean 26^string length - Numbers I cannot represent with words like billion). So there's no problem with adding new blocks. I like the idea of having vertical slabs and horizontal stairs, I've often found myself wanting them in builds.

Vertical . . . Slabs . . . I'm not sure I am understanding . . . Do you mean instead of slabs that look like this when they are placed down ( __ ) you would like slabs placed like this ( | ) ? Im not sure I like the idea, it just seems a bit odd to me.
On to the Vertical Stairs . . . Not sure I am understanding that one Either. I can't even imagine what that would mean, so I do apologize, but can we not already place stairs in a wide variety of orientations? I've never had any issues with lack of functionality or Aesthetic goodness with them O_o

Ah, I see. Thanks for informing me. Ignore that section of my post then, good point.

The increased overhead could not possibly be noticed. Adding more blocks creates overhead, but not so much that Mojang should just stop adding new blocks to their block based game. Plus it would open up a lot of creative possibilities, and could even be used in some technical builds. Even though I have seen this suggestion before, Support
Sorry guys, I forgot I made this thread until now :3. So basically from what I can tell is that a lot of people are saying that there are a lot of unnecessary blocks that would be slab-ed. That is true (like the point of the redstone lamp), but still I believe many people would enjoy a more diverse selection of slabs/stairs. As of now, all we have are the 6 types of planks, 3 stone (no smooth stone stairs though), sandstone, and netherbrick for our choices of stairs and slabs. When you look at it, we don't have many slab and stair variants. Think of the uses glass slabs could have or log stairs on that house of yours? What I want changed even more though is the ability to add slabs and stairs on their sides. Anyone would be able to make exceptional details that are not possible right now if this change is implemented. I also saw some people saying this would take the fun out of building, I would actually argue that this would add a lot more fun to building! There are many more organics and buildings that would be able to be compacted if slabs and stairs could go on their sides. Right now though these are not possible because it is not possible to orient stairs and slabs on their sides. But anyway, thanks for actually reading this and replying to it :D!

I'd like to be able to place slabs in an upright position ( I ), but I don't see the need for stairs?
And if something like this were to be implemented there should be some key you've got to hold down to place slabs like this. Imagine trying to get your slabs to lay right normally, agh.
And why is that so bad? Surely if we scale it down smaller it will provide players more opportunity to detail their buildings rather than just keeping a plain 1m*1m*1m block build?
Like he said, this is extremely redundant.
Also, this isn't going to be added in 1.8. This isn't a perfect time to add this. I don't know if you've been reading the news here, but they are are pre-release. That means they aren't adding anything. They are only adding bug fixes.
Look, there are mods for this, and while it would be cool in building, I really don't think it's needed.
No support.
I would be excited to see vertical slabs, but ecstatic at having access to the side-way stairs. While doing complex builds at a survival-scale I often find myself wanting the stairs to be horizontal. Mostly to soften corners or add depth. to different features. When working at the massive scales that creative builds work at, it would be less useful. Like one of the previous responders, I'm curious as to how the rotation would be toggled.
As for which blocks to make into stairs/slabs, I'd like to see the following: Smooth (red)sandstone, Granite/Andesite/other 1.8 material that I forget the name of, Packed Ice and Prismarine Brick. Maybe Obsidian.
Additionally, 1.8 added a hieroglyphic stone block similar to the Chiseled Sandstone. Did it add a beveled Sandstone block that would be the equivalent to Chiseled Stone? I don't remember seeing one but could be wrong. If not, it would be fun to use.

Don't be afraid to report vague, wishlisty, or redundant (Maybe all three) suggestions. Leave a post saying what's wrong.
But you have to admit there are no game-changing changes, like 1.7
