I got some feedback on reddit and I'm thinking of a few major changes:
- Instead of an insta-kill, the shape shifter will reduce your health by half, rounding down.
- Creatures will be resistant to some types of weapon damage, but not immune (possibly excluding the spectre.)
- Clarification: by rare, I mean that you might not see some of these mobs for hours and hours of gameplay; they would not make regular appearances.
First off, I agree that Herobrine should be more complex. I dumbed down how he'd manifest because it seems like the fun stuff would be difficult to program and/or implement. I would ideally like to see Herobrine do some creatively creepy stuff.
Greenleaf95, I was thinking about changing the mossy cobble core of the golem to diamond. An explorer might see a diamond block, go over to mine it, and then SURPRISE, a golem. I was originally thinking about a diamond block, but went with the mossy cobble because of it's connotation of mystery and evil forces in connection with spawner rooms.
I picture ents differently too, but I couldn't think up a design I liked for the Minecraft universe. I settled on the design to give a face to the description, and I think a better rendering is possible.
The mushroom sprite probably shouldn't drop mushroom soup.
Maybe the lavaworm should indeed spawn in lava. I think it would be too complicated to implement an intelligence into the lavaworm to avoid trees, which would mean some forest fires.
A shape shifting block, either as a texture or a dropped block sounds interesting, but I'm wondering how difficult it would be to implement. If it were possible, this would an ideal appearance for the shape shifter.
Someone on reddit suggested the spectre appear as a negative light source, visible by observing the draining of light in the space it occupies. I like this idea, and if it can be done I think maybe a hybrid of this negative light and a solid sprite would look pretty good.
In regard to all the creature ideas, I think they'd be fun, but I'm not too attached to most of them. I started with the lavaworm and tried to think up other things to accompany it. The golem is basically a Minecraft cousin of Gorignak from Galaxy Quest. I would really like to see the spectre in the game, I think it would be fun to interact with. I'm also attached to the lavaworm and golem. I'd be cool if any of the creatures made it into the game, but I've had plenty of fun just daydreaming them up.
Thanks again for the thoughts and suggestions.
Another version with some implemented suggestions:
Sweet, but yeah I agree with the modded shapeshifter, they should move very slowly, like 4 blocks a day and only move when ure not looking at em, and they should spawn in groups, so you could be in ure base and these blocks keep getting closes, maybe extremely resistant to all but dynamite (also at 1/2 heart they kill)
Honestly? These are really cool ideas. However, I figure'd I'd go through them and comment on each individually!
Golem: REALLY like this one. I've been wanting a stone-based creature for some time now. Not sure about it dropping diamonds though...But I can't think of anything more fitting, so yeah!
Spectre: Excellent. Wouldn't change a thing.
Lavaworm: I personally believe that it should move more slowly, as skeletons can be pretty quick...also, this guy sounds incredibly tough to kill, so maybe something better than Obsidian? A new item, maybe, or a :DBlock:. Would depend on how tough they really are. One of my favorite ideas, as it can also damage the landscape.
Ent: Not too keen on the design, but otherwise love it. The surprise factor alone would be worth it! XD
Leprechaun: I dunno...I'm just not feeling this one. Maybe it's the suit. It feels really out of place, even on that page.
Shapeshifter: Love the modified version, wouldn't change much at all from that. However, some people have mentioned including a rare block that turns into whatever block is closest to it, so maybe it could drop that instead? If it gets implemented, of course.
Tripod: Make it slower, and I think you've got an excellent idea!
Herobrine: Seems a bit too simple for Herobrine...I remember hearing an idea where the game could randomly link two people's games without either of them knowing, so they'll occasionally stumble upon some manmade structures and such without knowing who built them, only occasionally seeing another person. That's how I think Herobrine should be implemented.
Stone Seed: Mossy Cobblestone generator, anybody? I really like this one though.
Mushroom Sprite: Probably my favorite, oddly enough! Everything about it is simple, yet awesome. Maybe it should drop regular mushrooms instead, though? Fully-made Mushroom Soup seems like cannabalism to me. XD
I know I had alot of negative comments, but those were nitpicking. Love the ideas, really!
Specter----This is awesome. Maybe drop ectoplasm intead of lightstone? Or does it glow?
Herobrine----No. I want him in the game but not like that. I think Herobrine should wander around randomly, and very rarely you will see him. He walks around and sometimes drops a sign saying HEROBRINE WAS HERE and puts torches in dark caves and whatnot. He should just build weird stuff. Like a door up high in the side of a mountain that leads to a TNT or just a book case. He will only start appearing when you have 3 or more chunks on a current map and only builds in a chunk your not in. He wont destroy anything you built. When he comes near you he makes a sound like that of a Hunter from L4D. He is super strong, and super fast when rushing toward you to kill you. He will only attack if you are within 20 blocks of him. If trapped, He will dig toward the surface.
Golem----Golem is sweet. I can imagine finding a cave and then some big badass rushing toward me. They should stop pursuit after a set distance though. Lets say 45 block distance or a distant depending on game difficulty.
Lavaworm----Great. Good reason to build a mote. They should only spawn FROM lava so you very rarely see one moving on the surface. Would it start fires or would it avoid trees?
Ent----Sweet. These are all so awesome. It should look like a tree just a bit different, like green eyes on the highest piece of visible wood before the leafs start.
Leprechaun----Mixed feelings. They should only drop Gold or maybe Silver if they add it.
Shape Shifter----Should randomly change from any block. It will drop the block it is. They will only change into something in their line of site. Even water, exept you cant move through it. Basically a texture changing monster. Changing into the block of what it sees. They should be passive, until you step on one or hit it, then it hops wildly and does some damage.
Mushroom Sprite----Drops 1-4 of either mushroom, can drop both at once but no more then 4 IN ALL. Spawns on dark grass, moves slowly.
Stone Seed----Cool, could fool you into thinking its a dungeon, and then dropping you into lava.
Oops forgot one.
Tripod----Ah, i can see the many zombies now. You see this thing walkin by and spawn three zombies and a small tripod. Small tripods dont spawn anything but slimes until it grows up (one full minecraft day of not being killed) They drop coal or maybe clay?
How about a monster that looks like ore, but if you hit it, it comes to life and starts attacking you. If you kill it, it drops whatever ore it looked like. There could be iron, diamond, gold, etc. With the diamond one being rarest, and strongest (most hp, and damage done per hit).
First off, I agree that Herobrine should be more complex. I dumbed down how he'd manifest because it seems like the fun stuff would be difficult to program and/or implement. I would ideally like to see Herobrine do some creatively creepy stuff.

Lavaworm: Hmmm... maybe. I think it should spawn around lava only and not out in the open.
Ent: I've heard this concept a few times, but personally I don't think ents are supposed to move. Maybe in LotR they do, but not in classical mythology. Ents should be trees that aren't going to stand by and let you chop them down, not mobile warriors of environmentalism. Idk, that's just my personal opinion.
Leprechaun: SO LONG AS IT DROPS LUCKY CHARMS, YES.
Shapeshifter: ... One hit kill? No thanks... I do like the creepiness factor of a moving block of dirt, though. Maybe it should just be neutral and fairly benign? Something to creep you out, but not scare you outright.
Tripod: NO! I HATE SPAWNERS!
Herobrine: Not saying anything here, mostly because I'm not too sure how I want Herobrine implimented. What you said is a bit too... machine like... Herobrine should be enigmatic, almost random, and always at a distance. When you give chase, he vanishes.
Stone Seed: YES, YES, YES!!!1 I'm lovin' having a red herring that's mistakable for the golem. Creates a neat "fight or flight" situation for both mobs.
Mushroom Sprite: This should lay mushrooms like a chicken lays eggs. It shouldn't drop mushroom soup, but four mushrooms instead.
All in all, you win some serious internets.

Let's have burning bags of poo in minecraft, that would make the game better too!
Eh, i like most of them, 'cept the Specter and Herobrine. I think Herobrine would be better if it encounters the player then a horde of other mobs spawn so you get destracted and make a oFTo face, not noticing the horde, basicly like one of the tank's uses on L4D, just destract the player(s) so the horde of mob can take you down. The Specter just sounds like spam unless it commonly spawns near lava, pushing you into it.
Wow, a mob suggestion idea that doesn't suck. I salute you. However, some of these seem incredibly gimmicky.
Herobrine sounds more like a nod to a silly Minecraft-specific meme than a significant contribution to the game. It offers nothing new, and doesn't need to be here.
The Mushroom Sprite sounds like an overpowered copy of the pig; it's a defenseless, food-giving mob that grants the most powerful food in the game, without even having to cook it. Make it drop a random mushroom and actually fight back (even if only zombie-difficulty) and you've got something: a way of making mushrooms renewable, in lieu of having them grow and spread on their own in caves. Though, frankly, I like the idea someone else threw out of just having zombies drop mushrooms instead of feathers, and having two zombie-style mobs that drop the same loot would be redundant.
The "Stone Seed" appears to just be your way of trying to make mossy cobblestone renewable. It's defenseless, easy to kill, and not particularly frightening. Better to just wait until Notch gets around to having moss spread to nearby cobblestone blocks.
Your mobs like the Stone Golem, Ent, and Lava Worm are the best parts of the suggestion, because they offer something truly unique to Minecraft: mobs that require different tools to be killed, in this case pickaxes, hatchets, and water buckets. Right now the closest thing we have to that are mob spawners that require a pick to be "defeated." Might want to flesh out the Lava Worm a bit... I can't imagine a way to keep it from burning every forest it passes through. I love the way it circles the player like a light-cycle, though.
Eh, I like all of them as they are except for Herobrine. Just seeing some random person spawn and dig a bit wouldn't be scary at all, it kind of ruins the whole stupid backstory to him.
Did you know that Notch himself looked at this suggestion on the 20-minute documentary?
It showed him and the team looking at this picture and there was an audio of Notch saying
"we don't really like putting in other people's suggestions... it makes it feel like we aren't making our own game anymore"
"but when we see how much these things are supported... we're starting to change our way of thinking"
The fact that some of those are like monsters you would see in a horror movie makes your ideas feel that they would fit nicely in the game. So far all the hostile mobs are a horror theme resemblance, but a lava monster (of any kind really) has a big weakness in making it, it will burn things so it can't be found on land (Not my amazon forest!), It would spawn in lava (isn't it lethal enough?), Since it spawns in lava, it spawns in a light source. I like most of the others (No green Luigis stealing my gold please) though. Have you ever considered making a mob have multiple phases (Like when you kill a mummy, it becomes a zombie or skeleton). Also, the diversity in every mob you have makes me want to say yes even more. P.S. good sketches.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
the golem yes but just tnt to kill it is not appealing to me maby pickaxes as well.
the larver worms great potential but should not go above ground. i am making a tree house.
i don't mind the tripod the stone seed or the mushroom sprite.
