I've looked around and found some nice ideas for Obsidian uses, but none really fell into the base Idea that I have about it.
Obsidian is as far as I know the toughest material you can mine at the moment, and therefore should represent near-indestructible equipment.
I also note that no players should easily be able to early forge unbreakable tools for their mining trivia, so I'm suggesting a method that involves a bit battling baddies and mining and some knoweledge of crafting.
Here it goes: Tools made basically the same way as with wood/gold/stone/iron/diamond, only use another material, Infused Obsidian. (bear with me here)
How to make Infused Obsidian:
First off you need Obsidian, witch you need diamond pick to mine, then with crafting combine one block of Obsidian with a Diamond to get a "base". This item cant be placed like a block, it can only be held like a bucket, or iron bar and has no uses. It then needs to be "forged" into a material. Using a furnace, Coal simply won't do, so we need TnT, and 3 pieces to fuse the two parts. TnT will burn very fast, and very intense, so maybe a improved furnace even. Once the items are fused we get the Infused Obsidian block, witch is black with light blue particles. The shaft for theese kinds of tools should obviously be diamond, for durability perfection. and the diamond handle should be made with fusing an Iron stick(not wood) with a diamond.
I want to enforce the basic point that theese tools will take alot of time, mining, hunting and expensive materials to use, as they would serve as a "neat treat" for players who has already spent alot of time mining, retracking and mining some more. So I feel the cost should be atleast this high, or even higher. Its also not all about the "finished product" as to the prossess of making "highlvl" items.
This recipie demands that you:
Kill creepers (a good deal)
mine diamond (alot)
mine obsidian (defying the dangers of lava)
and has spent enough time with a furnace and crafting station to get good ideas to test out.
The tool's basic function:
The speed and strenght of Diamond tools and swords.
Unbreakable/indestructible/unlimited durability
The Infused block function:
Cannot be blown up by tnt, pretty
The Iron stick function:
Same as wooden, gives durabilityboost to tools its used on
and provides other uses where wood simply would not do, or fit.
I do not think Armor should be allowed crafted from this, but it would maybe be an idea that you'd have to have leather gauntlets when working with the "Infused Obsidian" or else take half a heart dmg pr other sec, considering the heat it went through being fused.
As the forum states I should only have one suggestion per topic, I shall end my post here for you guys to comment for now.

Well I think obsidian tools as unbreakable is a good thing but naturally it needs to be made difficult to obtain. as such I say make it eat 10 blocks when you smelt an obsidian ingot and it won't smelt if you have less. so breastplate would require 80 obsidian. plus make obsidian armor have a gold trim in the model so you can make it that you have to fill all the empty slots in the recipe that wouldn't normally have and ingot with gold adding a little extra rarity to help balance some more making obsidian armor 80 obsidian and one gold (and yes I know the boots would require a lot more gold than the armor but that'll help balance out getting a whole suit as well). in the case of tools/weapons made of obsidian instead of the gold filling make it so you have to replace the sticks you would use with a diamond gem for each stick so a pickaxe would be 30 obsidian and two diamonds and make the handles have diamond colouring. this means you'd need a sizable amount of materials and you'd have to have a good bit of diamond since you had to make a diamond pick for the obsidian anyway. I think that would balance out unbreakable diamond quality items if you had to spend the time and farm up that much to get em. plus it'd look pretty damn cool as well lol. the key points being of course the required rarish materials plus the massive amount of obsidian needed at 10 obsidian a bar. This also gives gold a practical use.
The ammount described here perfectly describes the ammount I'd like to see in an Obsidian Block/bar which I'd then fuse with Diamond, to make it Infused.
Obsidian, in real life, is pretty much very sharp glass. It is VERY fragile, so a more realistic and unique application for it is to make tools that last a very short amount of time (wood or even less), but are more powerful than diamond.
No invulnerable tools. Ever. I don't care how much effort you need to go through to justify it, we don't need invulnerable tools, esp. not diamond-strength ones. It will throw off the entire game dynamics. High-level tools should not even be maintainable as your standard set of equipment. Using a diamond tool is supposed to be a special investment, and used carefully so as not to waste it. A permanent tool ruins this dynamic. Once you have them, you have reached a finale to the game.

This is a good idea, if obsidian is ever made into an ore (but still be made and everything in the same way, with water on still lava) that you can smelt into ingots for that kind of tool would be great.
Also what Mystify said makes sense, anything that is able to be used forever (other than buckets, bows, etc) would kind of be an end to a part of the game.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Obsidian was thought of as a stand in for Adamantium, (which i think would serve better for the tools).
Still, my suggestion is more pointed at the prossess of making the tools than the actual raw materials used, excuse my fluffy use of Obsidian in the title for this topic. I've also found myself in sort of a hole while reading more on this, the point of getting an item that you'd never ened more of seems to kill the hunt a bit. But I would really like to see a tool with diamond properties that lasts longer, but mainly introduces a new way of thinking when crafting them. The furnace and materials already ingame have seemingly endless oppertuneties. And while pointing out that one of my favorite parts of this game is rewards, I like spending time to get them.
Other topics suggests Obsidian is used for powerfull shortlived tools, but since you can't stack tools atm I'm more hungry for the type of tool you don't need 10-12 of to go on a mining expedition :tongue.gif:

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
sooooo. Please forgive me my interest in obsidian, and my lack of patience when it comes around to reading myself up on ALL of it.
I've renamed the topic, and I might rewrite my first post wholly to underline my idea for high lvl crafting and goals for it. The reason I've used Obsidian and unbreakable was I found this to be among the things people found interesting, and I was hoping to catch their interests with it.
I might have evoked "used up" examples here, and for that I apologize.

Unbreakable is interesting, yeah. I've seen some interesting suggestions about it too; a set of obsidian tools would be as effective as stone tools. Thus, people with a diamond pick can still mine everything and a lot faster than people with an obsidian pick..
Taken the notion that Obsidian is brittle but sharp, maybe infusing "natural stone" would yield an infused stone tool with double the uses of diamond, but at the same strenght as stone? (with the exception that it can also mine the higher tier materials at half the rate of Iron or diamond) making it a slow but durable material for tools?
If we expect to see a tier at the level of, or above Diamond, it should not be about strenght and speed, but balance, or durability. And that it should take time, consistant with the reward type.
Given the way Obsidian is made, you can't smelt it. It's like trying to smelt glass. So I don't see how you would 'infuse' it with stone. Personally, I think Obsidian should only be used for bladed instruments (swords, axes, not sure what else there is, i need to get this game -.-) It would be the most effective form of these tools/weapons BUT break the fastest.
Thats how I feel about it atleast. Obsidian is (from what I personally know) the sharpest material on earth, but is brittle which is why it is not exactly a favorable material especially in this day and age. Steel may not be able to hold the same edge, but can withstand more force and essentially do more.
I'ma gonna shut up now before I got on a crazy rant, don't mean to shoot down your ideas or anything. Just want to give my perspective on things is all. Anything can happen in a game after all.
Honestly irl obsidian is quite brittle and extremley sharp, and atm is way too hard ingame. It should take far less time to mine and should NOT be used to make unbreakable equipment.

Stop making topics complaining about people complaining about complaints.
Obsidian=sharp glass like material, brittle etc
Unbreakable no-go
My goal here is, I'm sorry if I'm poor at making a piont here, strenghtening/improving/combining materials, like we do IRL, and make new ones. Which includes improved Furnace, made of bricks or whatnot, fired up with high heat intensity, molding two materials instead of smelting one, making a new one. Its use? Game creator decides of course.
From what I've been reading on the forums, many yearn for durability, and higher tiers, I personally would see a wider selection of tools, armors, and blocks before I see "Titanium adamantite" but I'm trying to work my way for all ends here.
Some of the new materials could add for example a positive effect and a negative one to balance. or even simple more-fun-than necessary properties. For instance, Fuse Iron and Gold and get lets-call-it Electrum for funsies. The electrum when made like a hat + torch make a sturdy but shiny-golden mining-hat with alittle light in front, not so much as from a torch, but enough so that its not utterly dark directly in front of you.
Use the electrum to make a sword, with Iron properties, but simply another more shiny skin.
Use the Electrum to make a Ceremonial Breastplate, more suited for a manequin than battle.
-these are examples, not direct suggestions.
If Copper existed in the game, you could fuse it with Iron to make Brass, which would make lighter buckets able to carry 2x water instead of one, but could not for example carry lava. a cooking pot or something,
Again emphasis on the prossess and what doors such a crafting system would open. Many natural blocks wouldn't need to pop up around the worlds when you would be able to make them.
With this type of crafting you would need to explore the whole aspect of the game to make the things you wish, mob-drops for fuel or additions to materials, and alot of trial and error by the furnace and workbench.
