I dont care about credit, im pretty sure there are tons more amazing things to be found under all the other maps. Im just happy i brought some fun for a few people today and helped at least give one map on new patch day 1 where the most fun was to be had underground, not just above ground.
I was really close to skipping 404 over, it looks really bland and boring at first, for some reason I was drawn to all that gravel there. Something just didnt seem right.
P.S there are 8 diamond in that cave where they are able to be seen from lava or dug 1 square down.
Im exploring other seed maps currently glacier is amazing up to. So is another seed ive made called minick1932
minick1932 is gonna be my first build i think. around x -11, z 26. Im gonna make my first house in that horseshoe type bowl or whatever that is.
I didn't actually go straight down to the bottom of the world when I entered the cave. I carefully worked my way down the waterfall and found an opening a little way down. I went in there and found a nice little room with a shelf and lava lighting up the entire room.
I set up camp there, and mined out the ores I found in the immediate area. After that I started exploring the connecting caves a bit, but there was tons of mobs so I went back up for a break. I then started funneling the lava down the caves to give me some more light and a clear path back to my camp.
While building this lava river I saw another light source, obviously more lava, and went to check it out. It was nothing special, and the cave looked like it was going to end there when I heard a noise above my head...
That was standing on the ledge staring straight at me when I turned around. I quickly jumped and hit it a few times to kill it without taking any damage. The damage taken was from a skeleton a few minutes earlier that got a couple shots on me before I killed him. So far those are the only 2 kills I have.
I'm now trying to see if I can grow some trees. I had some bone meal, but I wasted it all on a sapling that didnt grow because the ceiling probably wasnt high enough at the time. I was dumb and kept clicking until I had none left. Hopefully those will grow, as they are the only 4 saplings I had.
Now, I have a few questions from playing this:
1. Why do the caves look so much different now that I cant use torches? I know they're the same as they were before, but they just seem.... different.
2. How will I get more food? I killed some pigs to start and have 3 cooked pork left, but besides finding mushrooms for stew I dont think I have any renewable source of food. This could be bad.
3. What the hell am I supposed to do with all this coal?

The compass is freaking sexy though.
Those diagonal pixels harden my nipples.
Well hell, apparently I'm going to make my first attempt at this in super-hardcore mode. What's that, you ask? That'd be playing without sound since that's the only way I can get into single-player MC at the moment. x.x
Heres what I'm currently doing in 404:Now, I have a few questions from playing this:

1. Because they are scarier then ever? xD
2. Try to make a fishing pole (first find spider : /) and use it on a water source to catch water.
3. Fuel for the furnace? Or maybe you could feed the creeper... I wonder what creeper eat!

Enjoy your underground forest fire.
Yeah I know... I regret not getting seeds now. I did get the reeds for... paper! lol.
I'm really considering changing the rules a bit to be more of a dungeon run, and not a dungeon build. More restrictive on building things, and more about trying to fight through the mobs and get ores and stuff. The building part makes it much easier, especially when you start utilizing lava.
I might make a slow and fast mode for it. Fast mode is get in and get into the action. Best for videos and epic lulz. Slow mode is really seeing how long you can survive underground... without torches.
I will also be posting a video of a run I just did when it gets done rendering. Its really my first live commentary (or commentary at all), but I think it turned out well enough. Nothing fancy, though. Should be up in the next hour or so, if I dont go to sleep before then.
I went ahead and tried. Here's my version of the text-only escapade. Might add some pictures, but not until later reports (assuming I live).
Routine mission. Head out to the wilderness, search a cave system for diamond exports, among other things, and contact extraction.
At least it was before the Creeper found my boat. I crashed over a waterfall, woke up to a beach, next to the target thankfully (I recognized the island shape and stuff), but there was nothing nearby (no ship, supplies, nothing... not even gunpowder.. damned Creeper). The issue being there was no hope of leaving now, as the radio was on board the ship, where-ever its remains lie, and all the supplies I needed is in ships the cargo (or somewhere in the ocean). On regular missions, dozens of people go missing, so I doubt they'll send a rescue team after me. Anyways, no supplies, daylight burning, I've got to head down to the cave system. I was always an explorer, though, that's why I signed up.
During my other missions, I never stayed outside for the night time. Stats said 90% of all people MIA stayed outside. I'll take my chances inside the cave, but without my normal supplies, I have no idea what I'm going to do.
Report 1 - FOOD!:
I found my journal. Not in the best quality, but it lets me write on it, and store my "adventure". Going to go through with the mission, now to survive, and use my journal to record "reports". Before nightfall, I want to be inside the cave. Maybe it doesn't sound smart, but that's where I'll go.
Gathered supplies I figured I may need: coal, cacti, a couple yellow/red flowers, sand, stone, lots of wood, some saplings, workbench, stone sword and wooden pickax. Took until night. Did enough timing to get right. But before I dared jump into the hole, I grabbed some pig meat.
Torches. Never really knew exactly how to make them (how can cousin Steve do it with a stick and piece of coal?). not that torches would be helpful, seeing as I'm drenched. Either way, night is falling, time to escape to the underground.

DAMN, should have been more cautious. I went down, got caught by the waterfall that I had created upon revealing the cave (didn't think the entrance was under the gravel), fell a few dozen meters, probably broke a few bones, found a bunch of skeletons firing at me from everywhere, so I ran to light. That light was a lava lake with a single pillar of gravel in it. Not much lava, like 3mx3m with the pillar in the middle, but it was well enough to let me barricade myself in. I then dug my new home in the surrounding wall. I realized that I would need ore, but because I am not experienced at mining, unlike Steve, it wasn't big. While I worked, I cooked up 1 of the 3 pork chops I had and ate it, and healed myself (I was feeling weak, not my weakest, but pretty damn weak).
When temporarily finished my man-cave, I realized I would need food. I brought little down with me, and I doubt I'll find any pigs down here. Then I remembered Steve talking about the awesomeness of the Nether. Some place full of lava lakes, weird Zombie Pigmen and Ghasts (one of them shoots fireballs). I never really payed much attention as I wasn't a fan of hell, but he did say that mushrooms loved the environment (who knows why). I knew how to make mushroom stew, and I knew caves rarely held mushrooms, so I was stuck building the gate to the Nether (if you find this on my dead body, Steve, you suck-I wanted that obsidian boat). Not knowing exactly how far down I was, though the many Redstone veins should have been a hint, I though to grab lava and use water to turn it into obsidian for the gate (iron, let alone diamond, was not easy to find even for the buckets). I managed to dig a small outlet, but to no avail. Although I was not ready to exit (having a skeleton fall into the lava and shoot me before it died, using up another pork chop) I decided I had to. I undug my "wall" (the initial barrier I built) and I was surprised how light it was. I only remembered the darkness, but there was lava around to keep the cave lit. Seeing a Creeper ahead of me (on the other side of water) I decided to kill it for safety. With it dead (no gunpowder) I found iron, 4, enough for that bucket, and a spare. I smelted it, made a bucket and created my sand cast for the gate, filled it and... I had no water. Going back to the steam with the dead Creeper, it was way to dark for my (now paranoid thanks to my great entrance to the cave system) self to explore. I decided to dig from the outlet in the general direction of the source.
After a few circles (literally leading me back to the entrance of my "wall"), I found the source, grabbed it and began to solidify my gate.
After some serious burns, I built the gate (good news: mushrooms, bad news: no food (yet)). I'll take my rest now, as I have to prep for the Nether, which is new as I have never gone there before [yes, yes I (the player) have]. I wonder what the "Ghasts" are like... deadly? What about Zombie Pigmen? I don't know I'm too tired, must sleep (no wool for a bed...).
Essentially my story of building to the Nether. No rules against the Nether, right?
Seeing as there is essentially no overall goal, I'll set some for myself:
-Get to the Nether (not sure how to get food without some seeds or grass-yes I forgot seeds)
-Build fortress (every necessary room to survive, save food (I may find a way, damn seeds only coming from grass))
-Grab lots of diamonds
-Use Nether to escape underground and build some large structure or something
I will probably add more as I go, assuming I live. It wont be as short as it sounds above, I'll say that.
Lastly: fun challenge. Lucky 404. I wonder about 1337...
PS: The guy who mentioned fishing poles a few posts above me, THANKS! I completely forgot *finds a way to incorporate it into the story*
I can't do video, but I'll throw walls of books of text at you. I dunno how long I'll last, but I'll keep a journal.

Thats why you should use alternative sources of light. I'm not just trying to be a **** with the torch rule....
