Hmmm, I'll have to go back and look at the design I've used for years now but it seems like it was at least as compact as this design and it had the button lower which I prefer. I suppose you could move your design down one block to achieve the same thing though.

My earlier designs had the button lowered down, however my goal was to have the 6 blocks behind the portal be full blocks (No redstone, hoppers, comparator etc.) which was only possible by putting the button in one of the top corners and make the 6 blocks symmetrical (spent 9 hours come up the final product)

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
