i have built 2 kinds of floating fre powered machines. the box like one can change direction at spots. yes i know it is ugly. the other plane follows all guidelines for "self proppelled."
I'm reading the last couple of pages here, and I'm literally seeing the exact same stuff posted a year and a half ago.
It's almost like people are copy-pasting early posts, but scrambled around.
I'm just thinking it's not possible without a new type of piston at this point.
And NO! No tracks. That's the point.
Also, Marshal7593, your design was proposed early on, and proven non-functional. You can't place levers on pistons. Plus, if you could, you'd be able to keep the levers.

If someone goes back in time and kills their grandfather, the original timeline will pause, like a background process calling a method. The method will run until it is returned to the original timeline. As such, if the time-traveler goes back to his future, he will be paused, making the new method run until someone goes back and saves his grandfather, triggering a NEW method!

This isn't the same stuff because a year and half ago we didn't have and indefinitely expandable engine, or am I wrong? And although you can't place a lever on a piston you can place a block next to the piston and place a lever on it. You also said it was impossible; even though I think that we all did the basic design with redstone blocks. Also the guy that said tracks wasn't trying to come up with a solution but with something for himself.
The idea of a self contained redstone powered aircraft is fascinating but more than likely impossible with the blocks that are available right now although I do believe that they are already working on some sort of block that will help make it possible, I have the monorail piston craft thing on my world and I mess with it all the time to make it more efficient but i dont think there is any way to make
It better
Than it is with the blocks that are available at present time
I still think the key to this is a movable clock - which I am close to developing, but due to some bugs with redstone blocks, can't turn vertically. The clock is functional, but I'm not sure how to go about moving it or compacting it. When I have it as compact as I can get it and turned vertically, I'll post it here for you geniuses to discuss.
EDIT: I see that a lot of work has been done in this regard already. I won't boast about my "accomplishments."
Helpful redstone fact! This pic shows all the ways a piston can be activated by a single lever! The Direction the piston is facing does not matter unless it is facing the lever or block the lever is on.

Logic pattern: A=B. B=C. This means A=C
Example: I play minecraft. Minecraft is awesome. This means I am awesome!
I'm thinking of a design where a piston pushes a block with a lever on it; the lever pops off, but you can replace it. That didn't work, but I made a design that does! You need a redstone block, the classic 0 shaped aircraft, and a torch.
You place the redstone block, then the torch, and break the redstone block. The torch sends out a one tick pulse pushing the top half forward, while the redstone block pushes the bottom. It's simpler than the lever design to me, and I think this is a good (but small) step forward.
It works, yes, but it's hard to retrieve the first set of redstone blocks and torches. Gonna do more research before editing this again.

Please look at page 55 if you're trying to help, as they've pretty much solved it. The redstone block design allows you to keep using, over and over, a single redstone block to power the entire thing. You could even use dirt and a lever if you wanted. It's literally the best we're going to get.
I'm using it on my survival server, works 100% with no loss of materials
Guys, I think that I solved it because what about Sethblings new structure spawner that can spawn redstone and even buttons and stuff like that. Im not all that good at that stuff, but I bet one of you can figure it out.
maybe if with in game nbt edit you could change the type of zombie to zero, making it have no skin, then you could stack them on top of each other with an mc edit filter, then at the end you could stack a minecart then but the stacked zombies into a cart, put it on a mincart track then cover it. And btw, nbt and mc edit are not mods they are in game editors that show up on the MAP no the client
Guys, I think Redstone Miku's invention is the closest we will get. Unless we can make two airships power eachother with one facing backwards, to create some sort of piston clock, we can't make it automatic. If we can make it bidirectional, that would be nice, though. SethBling's stuff for the most part requires MCEdit and spawners unobtainable in vanilla survival.
I made a simple video showing how to do it and how it works
If You want to move that thing then just do this.
How it works is that the pistons next to the block get powered and the corners act like BUDs.
The other pistons update the BUDs pushing them out and retracting them. Even more
simple and LOADS more compact.
Hint: Fence gates can be used for doors and won't break when pushed!
Hmm the engine itself will be a separate post... too many pictures xP
Call it the Mineship Enterprise

I love redstone, he loves redstone, you like redstone, that dog likes redstone, same with that cat, that brick likes redstone, wait no he does not, that noob needs redstone, that blender likes redstone, and same with that pile of trash, that Sethbling wants redstone, WE ALL LIKE REDSTONE !!!
How about uploading a world save?
Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.
heres the world link

I'm like 80% sure that the flying boat glitch doesn't work anymore....

If you want to make a flying machine using custom spawners, just use S. It's totally self-contained and requires no fuel or user input.

Also Here is a bidirectional one with doors.
