I'm attempting to build an automated farm without using someone else's design. I want something I can run from a control room where I tell it to harvest crops, plant crops, feed animals, kill animals, etc. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to plant crops or feed animals without actually right clicking the ground/animal. Is this something dispensers and droppers can do, or is player interaction required for these processes?
as far as i know, this is an exhaustive list of things that can be automated:
-drops from witches, endermen, zombie pigs, slimes, spiders, zombies, skellys, wither skellys and creepers. rare drops excluded. Can still get records.
-iron
-roses
-chicken(cooked or otherwise)
-eggs
-feathers
-pumpkins
-mellons
-reads
-mushrooms
-cobbel(using creeper explosions out of a mob trap. good luck with that)
by automate i mean you could leave it sitting unattended forever and it would keep creating that material.
Cactus is great, 17X17 floor, 1 hopper in the center.
Place the cactus 2 tall, then use a fence next to top one. It will break and grow and so on forever.
Water ferries the cactus to the hopper
Sugarcane makes a 7 x 17 footprint, with a single hopper in the center as well. The next row shares the last row's Redstone, to save some resources.
Pistons are used to break the second (taller part) of the sugarcane. This requires a timer(I prefer eth0 timer) the slower timers are less lag. And if the server is able to sense a clock, the eth0 is the only way. Mine holds 150ish items to slow it down. As my server is looking to destroy timers.
Same thing, water ferries the sugar cane.
(Yes i play skyblock only, so limited resources is key)
my 17 is calculated from 8+8 for water flow from each side, and 1 in the middle to fall to the next water flow..
This is not the only way, just my way. HAVE FUN!! (LOL BUMP FOR THE 3 YEAR OLD POST!!)

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

can anyone think of anything else?
Cactus and sugarcane are simple adds to the list.

Villagers can be used to automatically harvest and replant crops. You should be able to find some videos on it with a little google searching.
