Today, I'd like to share with you what I believe is a brand new technology in Minecraft, derivated from my inventory activated redstone (see http://www.minecraft...-fov-detection/).
As you saw in the video, it's a cursor detector. I think its awesome, and could be really helpful for anyone building a computer and who want to make a mouse. Unfortunatly, I lack the skills to do a mouse myself, but I'm sure someone will come with something.
So, how does it works?
Remember the stairs receiver, that can detect if you have stairs in your inventory?(if you have no idea what I'm talking about, see the linked thread above)
Well, I discovered that if you are far enough away from the receiver (the thing with the boat), stairs on the ground count as in your inventory, BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE ON THE SCREEN!
It doesn't matter if they are behind a block, as long as they are not so far away that you cant see them and in the screen, they will take away the collision mask from the equivalent stairs in the receiver. Using that, you can make a circuit that goes on if a certain block is in your view...
Lots of possibilities!
-Safe that only open if you look at a certain block from a certain distance!
-Trap that kill people who break your chest (combined with the inventory activated redstone, 95% safe chests!)
-New computer interfaces!
-Combo lock openning by looking at paintings in the right order!
-Anything else you can think of!
Please, share your thought!
Fun fact: I said that you need to be far away (at least 35 blocks, may vary, should have to do with number of chuncks) from the receiver, but the stange thing is that you need to be far away from EVERY receiver using the same stairs, not just the one you actually use for redstone power.
Wow, you really have taken this to a great length. Right now I am considering all that can be accomplished with this. Now is there a maximum distance for this? I would assume that the items would factor into your draw distance for something like this. A mouse would definitely be possible but to what accuracy. Hmm... Oh! Has anyone checked the latest snapshot to see if this has been fixed? Just want to know before this becomes part of a large project. Again, congrats on your finds, hopefully this will be here to stay.

Nothing is impossible, some things are just highly improbable.
Upside down stairs becomeing not-collide when you can see one in your inv/screen? Now THAT'S a weird glitch.
Anyway, this is a great invention! You know those games where you should move your cursor between the walls without touching them? This is possible now!

Click it. Now.
Click the egg, not the spoiler. It's not THAT complicated.
The distance it work: the stairs need to be less than 16 block from you. You can test it by looking directly at the entity: If you go too far, it will stop being rendered.
In my demonstration, I used 4 channels(up, down, left, right). You can have a total of 6 channels (5 stairs + half slabs), so you can make something more elaborate. In fact, they are totally independant and almost instant (the delay you see in the video is caused by the long wire, not the detector itself), so you can make anything you can make with 6 levers that are on when you look at them.
For the mouse and mouse precision: I made the technologie for a 7x7 (no limit, just that I made it that size) screen with a precision of 1 block. The problem is I dont know how to make a 1 block 1 pixel display. If someone can link an exemple, I'll be grateful.
Oh, and you dont need upside down stairs, just regular (see the pics) but you need upside down half-slabs.
Lol, you can make diamond ore with this that disappears (gets pulled away and stone bock pushed in place) when you look at it. That'd really freak out people... lol
Playing around with it, made this: http://makeagif.com/i/SOxD36
A pulse shortener + block swapper (i know, the gif is horrible x)

Btw, how to make a button: when you see the stair item, the power is sent to a piston that drop the item in lava. that way you can have only one receiver type for a whole row of block, for a sreen for exemple
What static showed is the wireless redstone found by zomb1e (I think, correct me if Im wrong)
This is different. Its based on the same bug ( more or less...) but the stairs only loses their collision mask if you have one in your inventory(while, with the fences thing, they lose it by colliding with an entity). Using this, I developped the Inventory activated redstone, and now this, wich detect where you are looking.
So, Static showed new WIRES. This is a new redstone ACTIVATOR.
BTW, with fences, I believe the channels arent combinable, so it is one big switch with state 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
This use combinable channels. So 6 switchs with states 0 and 1. Way more possibilities.
Anyway, I'm almost done with my 11x11 trackpad wich follow your pointer with a precision of 1 block. Stay tuned!
To someone who want to contribute: English isn't my native language, you may have guessed it, so I'm not that good at explainning how all this works...
So if someone could make a nice explannation of this system for those unfamilliar with it, feel free to PM it to me (and post here you PMed me... Dont have the habit to check my PM...) so I can add it to the OP (with credit, oc...)

You have to be far away from the receiver. The actual distance seems to vary (must have something to do with chuncks) Try 35 blocks, then go back some blocks if it doesnt work.
The stairs must go up and down quickly in the receiver. for a tutorial on how to make the receiver, see:
If you build this and the boat dont seem to loose ALL its collision mask, change the orientation of the device.
Has anyone manager to get this to work in multiplayer? It works great in single player, but I have had no luck getting this or even the basic staircase-in-inventory detector to work properly in SMP.

This glitch is weird, but I hope it stays
Download world from the video (lots of crap circuit around, I was testing)

I could be mistaken however.

Do you speak spanish ?
On topic: "Simon says" game anyone?
Btw, almost done with my mousepad
WHAT, no way i would never actually pick up on that, you can actually speak (Type) Better than some people on this forum.
Anyway what was it like learning english, apparently it is the hardest language to learn, im learning Mandarin and im finding it soooo hard.
What are the conditions one must have the stairs in for this to work?

Horizontal part and screen wiring done!
