Earlier today, I was listening in on the stream of Minecon. To my high interest, Jeb_ was interviewed on what the 1.5 update would be like.
He announced that it would be known as the "Redstone Update". Pretty much everything to do with redstone will be worked on, fixed, and polished, and unintended game 'exploits' that allow you to accomplish certain tasks with redstone (such as the infamous BUD switch) will be 'accidently removed' and likely replaced with an item or method that is meant to accomplish the same thing.
If you don't believe my testimony on the matter, check out a Minecon 2012 archive for 11/24, or go the wiki page at http://www.minecraft...edstone_Update .
As said on the wiki page, in case you don't feel like going to it:
The possibility of linking minecarts together (driven by furnace minecarts)
Rails to unload mobs and perhaps players when reached
For discussion, what are your thoughts on this? Should Mojang remove some of these 'exploits', and if they do, should there be an intended redstone item to replace the exploit? What are some redstone-related items that you'd like to see in 1.5?
It's probably gonna be cool to see where they go with this, but I'm a little dissapointed that it's all redstone based, maybe i'm just to incompetent but i don't understand how some people make these big complicated mechanisms using it, mob grinders, tnt cannons, etc.
(i must sound like a minecraft neanderthal, "FIRE BAD!")
I don't like redstone. I only mine it for XP, redstone lamps, and to trade it to those who do use it. This update won't do anything for me, unless they add a few non-redstone related features (Maybe the Red dragon?)

That's good for you. There are people who do like redstone though, right? (Like me).
Yes, Mojang have just started work on fixing bugs that have been here for years, and they are also starting many features they promised years ago, and it simply isn't good enough.
Good, away with the bugs, in with some functions that DO make sense! I love the BUD switches but they should be implemented into a block or something.
Now, whenever I see a contraption on Youtube I'm like:
"ooooh, so that's how the bug works, so this crazy contraption works like this and this and this because the bug does this....
Err, how does it work again?
"
Then I just stop caring and I just rebuild the contraption from Youtube block by block and I don't care how it works anymore. So time for redstone to make more sense, I say!
I have a whole double chest filled with nothing but redstone. I cant wait for this update, so I can put that stuff to use! Also, why isn't there redstone blocks?
Just as those that work heavily with redstone feel fixing issues with redstone mechanics are a priority.
whereas the current terrain situation has a little less than 80% of the community royally ed
How so? Please provide statistical citations showing that "a little less than 80%" of the community is somehow having huge issues related to the current terrain generator. Of course such information is not forthcoming because the statistic is a fabrication derived solely from an opinion and a few people that happen to agree with it,
Basically, you are a fanatic; you have a fanatic devotion to the idea that Minecraft's terrain is broken. Like many of the others in the "fix the terrain generation" thread, you seem to think this is a huge issue. It's not. Can it be improved? Of course it can. The fact of the matter is that the entire thing is subjective. Common citations are things like Gravel beaches being in older versions. Wow. We can't have beaches that use one of the blocks they used to use. The entire generator is ruined!
Many of those purporting the superiority of the older terrain seem to paint Alpha or Beta it as a magical time where everything was great. Same arguments took place for those updates. I even found a thread about a person complaining that a new version of infdev "destroyed" terrain generation. However, Terrain gen has always been a sticking point, and people, like yourself, will simply never be happy with terrain gen, so why the hell should they bother appeasing you or those of the same ilk's requests? They'll just end up implementing it "wrong" (in your eyes) or use the wrong shape or they'll do something unthinkable like make biomes actually have some consistency with one another, rather than having randomized heightmaps. It's been a problem for quite some time, for examplethesethreads of complaints. All through various versions. Some of which go back to INFDEV. INFDEV. And the arguments could practically be copy pasted and find-replaced and be word for word a description of the current "complaints" with the terrain generation.
Obviously, players can hold the opinion that "it sucks now" but it comes to a point, where you keep looking back, and you keep finding people making the exact same arguments that "it used to be better" going all the way back to Infdev, that you start to realize, that no matter what they do to the terrain generation, there will be people that seem to find "problems". That's fine; they can post their problems in threads. Like the one about the terrain gen that is currently around.
But what is impossible to stand. The one thing that absolutely, positively es me off, personally? When people practically GO OUT OF THEIR WAY to mention the problems they have. This thread is about 1.5. Your FIRST comment is about "oh no they aren't fixing the terrain generation" well, no, because aside from yourself and a few mentally atrophied cohorts of yours, not many people really think it's broken. Certainly it can be improved, but few people really feel compelled to mention it in almost every single thing they post, derailing threads and almost purposely evoking replies like this one. Fact is that there has ALWAYS been a set of people that have complained about the terrain generation. Back in 2010, somebody posted a suggestion to overhaul the terrain generation- which interestingly suggests the very overhaul- and many of the features of the overhaul- that was performed for the 1.8 update. The very things being complained about today- such as localized heightmap variations- are the same things that were suggested in that thread.
In short, yes Khold's comment didn't belong here, but that doesn't mean he's wrong. It is a large problem, but I wouldn't mind waiting until 1.6 or something for it to be fixed.
Edit: In response to the post below mine: Sorry, let me rephrase that. That doesn't mean he's wrong, in my opinion. Whenever I personally play with default terrain I find myself thinking it could definitely be better, therefore I am agreeing with the proposals of Khold and the terrain reformists who organize their thoughts about the current terrain and suggest what could improve instead of simply raging about it and crying for it to be better. However, I do not believe they should force their opinions on others like you who think the current gen is just fine.
So then the person asking for the very same features that are cited as problems in the current "terrain generation sux fix it plx" thread was wrong.
But then, how are we determining who was right and who was wrong to begin with? Evidently subjectively, making the entire thing completely moot.
Fact is that terrain generation fanatics love to think they are arguing from a point of objective clarity, but almost all if their arguments are based on cognitive biasses and opinions. "I can predict what any biome will have" Well, yeah, of course you can. That's part of the F-ing point of a biome. Add to this the long history of complaints and it's clear that for every single change they ever make to the generator there will be a bunch of people insisting that the old one was better, or at ht every least using it as a "point of comparison" so that responses that are objectively able to point out the problems of the older version terrain generator no longer apply "But gais we aren't saying to bring back old generation" well, actually, yes, that's exactly what is being said when you say the new generation sucks and to fix it because it implies the old generation didn't suck, And following from that, it's easy to find threads going all the way back to Infdev of people making terrain generation complaints. Even if they implement the fantastically-impossible-to-actually-satisfy-everybody changes to the terrain gen, there are still going to be people complaining that it's the worst thing to ever happen to the game, and call for heads to roll. Sure, A good portion of the people complaining now about it might be happy, but the number is unlikely to change overall.
As much as I don't understand a lot about redstone logic gates and stuff I would still love this update especially if they add some new redstone items.

When they (tried to) remove the cart booster glitch, they replaced it with powered rails. I think everything is gonna be fine.

If they do remove it, it will likely be replaced by a block.
