Hi Jeb_, I know you're reading this. I just want to say I'm glad you're trying to make minecraft better.
Unfortunately, I just loaded up the latest snapshot, and I found out that the old rose is completely gone. Not only did I like the old rose, but I always thought of it as an iconic part of what Minecraft is.
What does Minecraft think the sun looks like? A big yellow square in the sky.
What does Minecraft think a pile of dirt looks like? A randomly pixellated brown cube.
Far from being a bad thing, I think these sorts of quirks are what gives Minecraft its charm, and part of the reason why it's so popular is that it has its own aesthetic that it's not afraid to flaunt.
What does Minecraft think a flower looks like? The iconic Minecraft rose, of course, which is now gone. (What are iron golems going to offer to villagers now?)
I realize you think you're making Minecraft more realistic by making roses grow in a bush instead. And in some cases I'm in favour of a bit more realism. Just not at the expense of stuff that we've learned to love. Also, the new rose bush looks like a cultivated rose, and I've always thought of the world of Minecraft as a wild and simple place, where singular roses grow bold and proud and defiant. And if players really want a rose bush garden, why not give them a recipe for a rose bush?
And a thing I don't understand: you're adding several new flowers to the game, so why delete one of the main old ones? If you're in favour of more flowers, why are you deleting flowers?
In the end, Jeb_, the fact is, I don't need you. I will go on to retexture and rename the old flower back to what it was, and continue to play the Minecraft that I love. But the more people do this, the less contact you will have with the actual players of the game, and the less you will be able to please them. I'm not sad for me, I've lived the Minecraft dream, and continue to live it. I'm sad for you, and for all the new players who will play with a watered down lame* version of Minecraft.
*Not actually lame; there are some features I really like, but others are like the new rose: lame.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
I can understand being unhappy with the change, but... to be honest, the roses never really looked like roses, so to me they were just 'the red flower.' If they were simply replaced in the code with the Poppy, then I'll be happy with that. But is that what happened? I didn't even realize roses were gone until I saw this thread, and the first time I saw poppies I assumed they'd just changed the rose texture. No big deal IMO, the rose texture wasn't anything amazing or special in my eyes.
Tbh, I'm generally not too happy when items are retextured. I'm not planning to start a war over a new flower texture, but I prefer the simplicity in the design of the old roses. There's no harm in just creating a resource pack to change the textures the way you prefer.
Rosebushes and poppies do the same function as roses (rosebush being the dye and poppies being what the iron golem now drops, so I'm guessing it also holds them as well seeing as poppies use the same id as rose.). So basically, no lose other than removal of an out of date texture. As stated above, if you really want the rose back that much, just retexture poppies.

Her morals worth a cent and best believe I already spent it.

Incidentally, it was round for a while, and only became square again through a very narrow vote. So it's not like the community as a whole gives a massive care about iconic things.
And a thing I don't understand: you're adding several new flowers to the game, so why delete one of the main old ones? If you're in favour of more flowers, why are you deleting flowers?
I know, right? Now we don't have a singular red flower to use in aesthetics.
Wait...
We have rose bushes and red poppies now? Twice as much red flower power? And you're complaining?
I will go on to retexture and rename the old flower back to what it was, and continue to play the Minecraft that I love.
Most people who don't like texture changes do that without making a topic complaining about something they're going to easily fix to suit their own personal desires, anyway. Things to think about.
But the more people do this, the less contact you will have with the actual players of the game, and the less you will be able to please them. I'm not sad for me, I've lived the Minecraft dream, and continue to live it.
Why do I get the distinct feeling that the vast majority of players won't give a damn about the change from a rose to a poppy? That's probably because most don't, in fact, and it's so overdramatic when players act like a small change they're in the minority at disliking means they're alienating the community as a whole.
I'm sad for you, and for all the new players who will play with a watered down lame* version of Minecraft.
Because a red flower... is now a red flower. Kaaay...
If anything, though, the rose has gotten watered up, since it's grown into a full bush. The rose you're so sad about has grown into a fully mature bush, and it's loving it. It's out of the house for the first time. You're like the parent throwing a fit because their child moved out of the house and has a successful job and wife. It's happy, galdernit, and accept that the only child you have left is a poppy adopted from the local flower shelter to fit in your purse for you to put cute hats on and take to the salon.

Or like a parent who has their red-haired child kidnapped and then the kidnapper is like "here, have this red-bearded dude and this other red-headed kid. What are you complaining about?! They have red hair don't they?"
The thing is, I think adding poppies would be awesome, but poppies don't take the place of the existing rose. Poppy fields should be vast, and almost a sub-biome of their own, and you should be able to brew interesting things out of them.

Pff, I think the new texture is better anyway (I mean, in my opinion). Dandelions are the iconic flower, in my opinion, because they were more common anyway.
I like this new change. I mean, the old rose could be added back in without me minding it...although that would make the cool Poppies look redundant...but it doesn't bother me that they are out.
Besides, I reckon Iron Golems should offer any flower (maybe each golem could have a preferred flower!)
I hate these types of topics that acts like Mojang is going to actually read it, like everybody has the OP's opinion, and pulls "facts" right out of their ****. Sure, I don't like roses being removed (If they did, this is the first time I heard of it. And coming from one of these threads, I have my doubts), but I'm not acting like an self centered person who thinks everyone looks up to me.

btw poppies could look like roses.
You have to think, there is probably a reason the snapshot originally wasn't going to have the biome changes.
It's a goddamn flower, it's not like they're stealing your liver or something...
If it's so terrible just replace the poppy texture with the old rose texture and use it as a resource pack. Would take less than 5 minutes.
Bahahahahaha, no.
Random flower is iconic!

Keep scrolling. Just keep scrolling...
Roses remain in game.
Red Poppy moved to a new item id
Rose bushes can be created by using bonemeal on a Rose.
Now if only this could get enough support and visibility. Still, the rest of the snapshot is amazing.
That's not why it has bad vibes. It seems like something bad is gonna happen in one of these snapshots that are coming.... D:
