So I just downloaded the 1.6 prerelease, and opened up one of my new worlds, which normally gets about 50-60 fps, but running the new snapshot I'm getting insane amount of lag. My fps has dropped to 6-20 fps, usually around 7 :/
Granted my computer isn't the best, it's been running minecraft fine until this issue, so I don't think my specs are the problem,
I have an i7 processor, 8G ram, the only problem I see is that the graphics card is integrated into the processor, bad for gaming, but I haven't encountered any problems thus far... Minecraft used to run fine, as well as some other games, like Neverwinter and Teamfortress2.
Help please?
I know how to run minecraft with more ram, but not with the new launcher, also if I don't find a solution I guess I can wait for the release then I can get optifine or something, but I'd really like to get into 1.6 now :/
thanks for the help
*edit*
I now know how to assign more RAM to minecraft, but it doesn't help, the framerate is still low...
Again, as the release came out, the lag persists still, so they didn't fix that with the release, although someone posted that this is a known bug and that hopefully this means mojang will fix it.
Also, I have a family desktop computer and 1.6 runs fine on it, the problem is that it's not often available so I don't get much play time on that computer. My current pc is a laptop in case you were wondering
I am having the exact same problem. I'm running a windows laptop which when playing 1.5.2 runs pretty nice. When i downloaded the 1.6 pre-release though, I get about 8 fps when before the lowest was 29 fps. I have an i7 processor as well with 8G RAM. Sure my laptop isn't the best, but its fine for minecraft. I too play Team Fortress 2 without lag and I haven't ever had problems.
In the launcher click on edit profile and go to the JVM arguments, tick the box and change the -Xmx1G to the desired value e.g. -Xmx4G. click save profile, play game. You should probably add -Xms4G to the JVM arguments too, for good measure. Java has updated recently, so make sure you've installed that too.

Yeah I hope there's a solution, or at least that it's better in the actual release

Oh yeah I couldn't find that, that allocates more ram,
so yeah I did what you said, -Xmx4G -Xms4G, which allocates minimum 4G and maximum 4G, but the lag still persists...
I'm getting 12-20 fps... not really satisfied
Yeah I did update my Java, which is usually my first impulse, I do have the latest version...

That's probably what's causing it. "Not so great for gaming" is an understatement - integrated graphics cards suck for gaming; they're among the lowest of low-end hardware. With my integrated graphics card I got like 15 FPS out of Minecraft at most.
If you have a dedicated graphics card, use that instead. With Nvidia cards on Windows there should be a "run with graphics processor" option when right-clicking on the launcher. If any of my assumptions made in this paragraph are wrong, then I can't help you.

Like I said, 1.5.2 runs 50-60 fps, the only problem is the pre-release
Maybe if you buy a real computer and stop whining on the forums like anyone will help you, your problem will be solved.
What an utterly unproductive comment. He's in the middle of a little process called trouble-shooting, and he has wisely chosen to seek the collective wisdom of experienced forum members. If you'd take a moment to review the information presented, you might notice that the problem can be isolated to a specific snapshot, and not the computer's ability to run minecraft. Go back to griefing servers.
Okay, if it's the integrated GPU that's the issue, do you have the knowledge/ability to assign more RAM to the graphics? You're going to need to go into the BIOS for this. If you have an i7 CPU there's a chance you'll be able to dedicate a fair amount of RAM to the GPU, hopefully between 512 & 1024 MB.
If you've already tried this, you could check your drivers, etc. otherwise I'm stumped.

Actually I don't know how to assign RAM to the graphics... I see how it could help but I don't know how to do it,

5.1: Sooo Much Laggggg
6.1: So Smooth
Render?
Optifine Might Help.

How do I install optifine in 1.6?
Theres no Optifine for 1.6 herp derp
That's what I thought too XD

If you go into your computer's BIOS assigning extra RAM to the GPU should be found in the section marked chipset.
REAL computer? man, thats a pretty good computer ya know? stop being so hater man
