I am ecstatic they added the mo' horses in the vanilla, it really opens up many building ideas I have longed to make and use in vanilla servers (stables etc) but I am disappointed they did not bring over all the colours.
The current variation colours are from what I can see, obvious quick mspaint jobs and the spotted variation looks very bad because it is just the circle brush in mspaint splotched on. It looks tacky - not minecraft default texture tacky, just overall tacky. I understand they made the png overlays of the variants to reduce file numbers and as a "quick job" to make it easier to edit later, but I would have enjoyed more base colours.
Some additional base colours which would be great to have along side the current base colours to add variation and flavour-
red roan
blue roan (the black overlay sort of makes a blue roan when on a grey horse)
palomino (This is a popular colour- pure gold horse with pale gold/flaxen mane and tail)
I am unsure if they were aiming to make an appaloosa with the white dots, but it really needs fixing, at least add circle spot size variation to reduce the mspaint look.
The overlay markings both increase variation, but at the same time they really need to fix the way they look to make them look a little more minecrafty and don't scream ms paint.

I like the painterly look of the textures. I am sure you can do your own horse textures now without much difficulty, so just grab your favorite overpriced 2d paint pot and have at it
It's funny how people so frequently refer to MSPaint but are clearly unaware of what it's capable of- or not capable of, in this case. Not to mention the implication that putting spots on a image should be some time consuming operation that involves high-grade software, especially since fundamentally there is no "add horse splotches" filter in Photoshop, and I don't see how the other filters could be used on such small images for anything approaching some unmentioned ideal "splotch".
So true, I will ragequit MInecraft forever if they don't add grullo, silver palomino, true albino and Knabstrupper spotting!!!1!
Nah for real, I'm really excited by the amount of colors they added. Even if some look a bit weird compared to natural horse coats, it just adds uniqueness. They look fine to me, not that I would complain if they added more colors. Blue or red roan would be great.
Ok, Paint does not support transparency so obviously they used GIMP, Photoshop, Paint.NET etc. to make the textures. The texturs are actually quite good, they look like horses!

As far as I remember, Notch uses Paint.net.
