Is anyone else having trouble growing huge mushrooms on the latest snapshot? I've tried underground, with no light, in mid-darkness, on dirt, on grass, on mycelium, at night, in daylight, everything. I'm just placing a mushroom, then using bone meal to try and grow it. Any suggestions? Is this me, or is it a known issue?
I'm having this problem in Release 1.2.5. I've noticed that above a certain altitude (62), it won't even plant, but anywhere I've tried (I'm about to test >7 below sea level, but that'll take a while since I'm in an SSP game and need to mine out an appropriate space), not only does bone meal not work, but the bone meal is not consumed in the attempt. I left it for a few minutes to craft something, and when I came back, another had grown beside it, proving that the environment is otherwise mushroom friendly.

Update: I have tested the bug both at the original location at Y=58, where it plants, but does not grow (no bonemeal consumed when attempted, envelope of 7x7x8 (XxZxY) measured, but it works fine with the base at Y=43, same measured envelope.
I tested this in creative mode. I grew giant mushrooms at y=240. I built a 5x5 platform 7 blocks above the mushroom block to reduce the light level to 12 to allow the mushroom to grow. Reliably growing giant mushrooms requires a full 7 blocks clearance above the planted mushroom.
If a giant mushroom will not grow then you have made one of two possible mistakes:
1. The light level is too high. You cannot grow a giant mushroom in high light levels. The light level must be 12 or lower in order for the mushroom to grow. If you are growing your mushroom outside then you need to build a small roof over your mushroom in order for it to grow. You cannot grow a giant mushroom without a small roof overhead, even at night.
2. Insufficient room. Giant Mushrooms require a full 7x7x8 space to grow. If you do not have sufficient room the mushroom will not grow no matter how much bonemeal you apply. If you are growing outdoors with a roof make sure your roof is at least 8 blocks above the mushroom.
it turns out that mushrooms are fussy! i finally got a giant mushroom to grow! it needs space and a roof. it needs 7 blocks x 7 blocks width, and a roof that is 8 blocks high and 7 block wide! hope it helps
