Iron nuggets are a recently added item in minecraft that seem to serve almost no purpose, they can be obtained by either smelting an iron tool, weapon, or piece of horse amour, or putting an iron ingot anywhere on a crafting grid. Should they be have more uses? Please specify.
I see it as a last resort for any tools that are too expensive to repair, but will break in one more hit. Might as well turn them into 1/9th of an iron ingot and make it useful.

Well I didn't know about the smelting thing but you know for mapmakers it does make a nicer looking key than a gold nugget

Smelting down all the armor you get in a zombie grinder or skelly grinder into nuggets can work out to a good bit of gold and or Iron. For those that play simpler and do not make Iron farms or Gold farms that can be very good.
I always imagined using iron nuggets with melons to make "Fortified Melon". Instead of giving an instant health potion, it would give a damage resist effect.
I'm also okay with it being an unbalanced way to slowly get iron back from mob drops or broken tools you never use anymore.

I'm certainly not the first person to have this Idea but I do like the idea of crafting Iron Nuggets into Keys. I believe that Iron nuggets can be very useful item in the game for crafting advance tech items in the tech tree that can be beneficial for survival or adventure modes.
I personally find the iron nugget useful in multiple ways. They are a new item that can be utilized by map makers, servers, and etc as something that could be edited quite easily. For example, map makers and servers could use it as a currency. Servers might use it as an additional item that is re-textured as something else for other uses. As far as vanilla goes, I find it a good addition to not just waste tools.
I don't have a problem with them either. I like that I can get back a bit of iron or gold from junk tools, weapons and armor. I get a lot of that junk fighting mobs and in loot chests. Sure, I have an iron farm and don't really need it, but it still seems better than just tossing the stuff into the item disposal.
Maybe they could be used to make a redstone-iron wire? (Basically works just like redstone but can be placed floating, like a block, so that crazy redstone torch towers aren't needed to go up or down with redstone, as this was always an annoyance for me. This would help compact a lot of builds.

That would be cool, and they wouldn't need repeaters.
I'm fine with iron nuggets because I see it more as a completionist thing. Gold nuggets exist, and 9 gold nuggets = 1 gold ingot, so why not make iron nuggets and iron ingots as a parallel structure?
Iron nugget recipes would be interesting (maybe change the tripwire hook to use iron nuggets instead of ingots?) But all I really want is for the smelting ratios to be better, for both iron and gold tools. It's probably too much effort to have a separate smelting recipe for every iron and gold tool, but if it went by durability and was slightly random, that would be reasonable. Make it so that smelting an undamaged tool or armor returns 1 gold or iron nugget + 0 to 1 nuggets per 30 durability. Yield would be:
Gold Tool: 1 to 2 nuggets
Flint and Steel: 1 to 3 nuggets, average 2
Gold Helmet: 1 to 3 nuggets, average 2
Gold Boots, Leggings, Chestplate: 1 to 4 nuggets, average 2-3
Iron Helmet: 1 to 6 nuggets, average 3-4
Iron Boots: 1 to 7 nuggets, average 4
Iron Leggings: 1 to 8 nuggets, average 4-5
Shears: 1 to 8 nuggets, average 4-5
Iron Chestplate: 1 to 9 nuggets, average 5-6
Iron Tool: 1 to 9 nuggets, average 5-6
This would make recycling of tools and armor dropped by zombies and skeletons more reasonable, although it would still be time-intensive.

Just curious, that's all.
They should get more uses down the line, of course. But for now, they are good enough as a way to get back iron ingots from tools you no longer need.

I'm currently playing a 1.12 Skyblock that has zombies drop 0-2 nuggets per, so they definitely have some uses.
Stay fluffy~

Iron nuggets are pointless unless you going to need to use them in crafting something other then Iron bars. Iron farms are not hard to make.

That fortified melons idea sounds cool.

I always thought they had a small chance of dropping iron ingots, not iron bars.
Just curious, that's all.

Or maybe some kind of repeater wire? Timing can be very important in a redstone build.
