Did the new update do something to how things despawn?
I can watch out the window in my base at night and watch things spawn and despawn. And where I used to be able to go hunting for the various things during the day (rotten meat, bones, arrows, etc), and go hunting spiders or creepers, Now there is nothing. Everything despawns before daylight, even creepers and spiders.
I checked distance. Things have spawned just outside the window, but then despawn maybe 15-30 seconds later. Not sure what to do at this point.
and yes, I'm relatively new.. so there might be something else I'm missing
I did go into spectator mode and make sure there are no nearby caves that are getting full of mobs, nothing is there. I also set to peaceful and then set back to normal in case I missed anything. No change.
Not liking this change, and hopefully it will be fixed soon, or someone can tell me how to manage this :-/

the mobs seem to spawn fine.. but they have even despawned while interacting with them. (I was having a shootout with a skeleton and it disappeared). They just seem to be despawning much more quickly now than before.

In my game, the creeper would just disappear and nothing would happen...
I can't keep enough spiders spawned to get a bow made.. I'm getting seriously annoyed

Render distance is 20 chunks.Would increasing that help with this problem?
No; the render distance issue causes issues with mobs failing to despawn. and clogging up the mob cap.
Yes - even though it is often said to cause issues with mob spawning it is actually an issue with mob despawning - because what happens is that mobs can exist up to 128 blocks or 8 chunks away from a player, and all entities require that a 5x5 (+/- 2) chunk area around them is loaded in order to be ticked (which includes their despawn method) but are still counted to the global mob cap. So, when the render distance is less than 10 chunks (8 + 2) they will not despawn before entering chunks that do not process entities, and buildup. Among other things, if you set render distance to, say, 4 chunks, then switch to Peaceful after mobs stop spawning, then switch back to Easy-Hard (note - difficulty otherwise has no effect on mob spawning) and then travel around, you'll run into tons of mobs which did not despawn even when difficulty was set to Peaceful, or mobs in broad daylight which did not despawn from the previous night for the same reason.
Note that this bug has existed since the dawn of time (basically), it only became a big issue when 1.7.4 changed the way the singleplayer internal server loads chunks (before then it always used a view distance of 10 regardless of render distance. However, this meant that render distance was effectively limited to that unless you ran a dedicated server or used a mod like Optifine. On the other hand, Mojang should have realized what would happen if the view distance could fall below 10 and limited it to that, which is exactly what Optifine does in 1.6.4, only changing it when a render distance above 10 is used. I have no idea if newer versions of Optifine do the same thing but it would be a shame if they don't and/or don't have a setting to set a minimum view distance independent of render distance).
Higher render distances have no effect because the mob instant despawn radius does not change, nor does the mob cap change (the game always assumes that a 17x17 chunk area is loaded around the player, which is another part of the problem. Ideally, the instant despawn radius should be (viewDistance * 16 - 32), down to 4-6 chunks, as 2 chunks would mean no mobs could ever spawn (or even move outside of the center chunk, so I believe the game already does do something about this), and the mob cap would scale to the square of render distance to keep the same density of mobs).
As for the OP's issue, mobs should never despawn within 32 blocks of the player, so I'm wondering if Mojang accidentally broke the despawn method, which considers the distance to the nearest player as well as the "age" of an entity (as called in the code but it is more properly a despawn delay), and the distance part is not working properly so it thinks they are more than 32 blocks away. For example, dropped items despawn after 5 minutes regardless of distance from the player; a code refactor could possibly explain this (moving all despawn code to a common base class and not properly overriding it).
Yeah also noticed that, but that's change was made a lot earlier actualy. Personaly I don't like it because it not only limits chalange ( encountering creeper in day) but also destroys some of the immersion - Mops dissapear even if you are looking at them

My two cents: yeah.. it's bogus that you can engage a mob and have it despawn in the middle of a (ranged) fight.

What is your render distance setting?
by c0yote
I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
i also not like because of same reason.
Hostile mobs despawn in a certain radius
