If microsoft can't bug test their products BEFORE release then they have no business releasing an update. My fiance and I play together all the time and now her launcher forcefully updated to this new 2.0 crap and she is unable to launch our current modpack. The screen gets stuck on preparing and refuses to go any further. Is there a way to revert back to the old launcher or no? Also.....what is this 32 bit garbage......most gamers have 64 bit systems....get with the program microsoft!

That's caused by something else. The previous launcher sat at version 1.6.76, you're running 1.6.73, so an older version of it. That's why you got that message, it has nothing to do with the new launcher.
Hm, I wonder if this means the new launcher won't be ever pushed to me?
So instead I decided to ditch the default launcher completely, I've now switched to MultiMC as that seems to have all the features I need.
Really random, but seeing your post makes me remember I should mess about with the texture pack so I can update to 1.11, but ah, I've got everything working and I'm making good pacing on just playing so I'm in no rush. I'm certainly better anyway whereas before I stayed on 1.6.4 and 1.7.x and was many versions behind for years. With 1.9 and 1.10 I was current for a while and everything's working so I'll probably just wait for 1.12.
The new launcher crashes for me more often than not. No other stability issues with my system, or any other software. No problem with any previous launchers either, so something is definitely bugged.
On the bright side, it didn't delete anything. All my saves and profiles are intact. Now if I could just run the game...
Just for grins, I tried updating on another system that doesn't have a high speed internet connection. Guess what? The new launcher won't load at all. It shows the dialog for downloading the new launcher, gets to about 10% then gives up with a dialog about not being able to download. So I guess it just can't be bothered with you if you don't have a fast enough connection so you're stuck. Luckily on that system I don't care.

Yeah, I play offline 99% of the time, and I was pretty ticked off until I found a loophole.
i agree this sucks i updated it 3 times now i cant even open MC, they really need to fix these issues ( at least i have a lot of problems after i updated my launcher) and the old one was working fine, although it didnt look good it still worked. Hopefully Mojang will fix this bug...
I don't know about you guys but I've reinstalled the Minecraft Launcher two times already, deleted all system files related to Minecraft as well, and I still can't load into a standard minecraft version. The version is 1.11.2, I never had issues with the old launcher. I run on Mac OS and everything should work theoretically, but I guess the new launcher is just ridiculously broken. When I click the Download and Play button, a progress bar comes up saying "Preparing..." and gets stuck at this. Anybody know how to get around this, even if temporarily?
I am also getting stuck on the 'Preparing' to load the game screen. I am also on a Mac, have tried Java updates, and a complete reboot. It was working fine yesterday and just stopped working today.

I absolutely can't stand the new launcher. launcher is literally a 'dumbed' down version of the previous launcher and is basically a bunch of ads when you open up.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but how are they ads? They're literally just a better version of the news feed on the previous add, that gives more news and a picture to grab your attention.
I appreciate the new look, and the skin-swapping, but the problems are frustrating. I closed and restarted it 5 times yesterday, and then closed down my server and restarted again before I got it to work. Before closing my server, no matter what I did, it crashed as soon as I tried to launch any version of the game, modded or not. I wish they'd at least left us with the option to revert to the old launcher until the kinks get worked out. It's much too buggy to leave paying customers with no other option than to use it.
I'm glad it's been smooth for you. It's been fine for me since that first string of crashes. I think the server was interfering with it. I lol'd at your signature, btw
My personal issue is the launcher is too bulky. Sure, the launcher is very user friendly now, but it's not developer friendly.
Pretty much everything used to be able to be done on one screen. See you game log/crash report? It's right there. Want to switch versions and make new profiles? All in the same spot.
Now you have to click a button just to view your crash log, and so far, it just doesn't even work. So I have to manually move into the Minecraft directory to find the crash. Changing versions and setting up profiles takes a little longer, too. Not so long it's the end of the world, but longer than it really needs to be.
Plus the new news section is just bad. You have to open it up in the browser just to see any information. For bonus stuff like Realms info, sure that's fine, but for update information, why? What happened to the little list and the option to view more details? The new launcher makes you go through a lot more hoops than you need to. I know they're all tiny issues, but they do add up and just overall makes a mess, especially when developing things.
Let's say you're making a mod. You're going to crash. A lot. The best part, though, is you can instantly get into debugging the crash since the launcher automagically showed you it. Well now you have to click the little "Show crash" button... If it eventually works, have it open up the log in notepad or whatever, scroll through that, find the error, close and recode. It's a small process, but a messy one. Repetitive tasks, for me at least, eventually get to me and my mind slowly stops working, which delays productivity a ton, and even if I didn't slow down, you want to push out those tasks as soon as possible, you don't want to be stuck on anything, and having to go through those little hoops do nothing but hang you up longer.
And yes, I get the whole crashing when loading up older modded profiles, too. If the crash report button worked, I'd probably be able to see why that is, but it doesn't.
Thankfully Mojang is aware of the issues and hopefully are currently fixing them. I really want to like the new launcher, I really do, but I just can't because right now it focused on being more pretty than easy to use.
i had to re-update my launcher 4 times now. still cant play multiplayer :/
I can, The new launcher seems straight forward. It's weird how some people can't play multiplayer, but others can. By the way: I LOVE YOUR ICON! Buck teeth creeper ftw

I completely agree with all of your points above. I also have a few of my own points to add in:
1) Why must the game log be opened in a new window? What is so wrong with it being displayed in the actual launcher like the old one was? Was it not "user-friendly" enough? Is it that hard to resize the launcher window to display the game log? Or is it "not possible" because the development team decided to use Chromium to display the assets of the launcher?
2) The launcher doesn't stay under one, single process anymore. It now runs under two to three different processes, all using quite a bit of memory(60MB to 100MB). Is it because they are using Chromium, which is a resource-intensive browser that uses several processes, to display the actual launcher's UI? If that is the case, the development team needs to look for another solution, since not everyone has a computer that can run the Chromium browser, which is also the reason the new launcher requires Windows 7 or higher.
3) Optimise it. Seriously. You used a custom version of Java to run the game, which was a very good decision. Now use that same technique with the version of Chromium being used by the launcher to ensure that it works far better than "stock" Chromium. I'm sure tons of people would be happy with that change.

Most modders use a dedicated development environment to make mods, such as Mod Coder Pack, which is completely separate from the launcher (you click on a batch file to start the game, which opens up a console window with the game output, including any errors or crash reports). This is not so much because of launcher issues; it would be VERY tedious to reobfuscate and add the classes to the Minecraft.jar (or package a Forge mod and place it in the mods folder) every time you made a change, instead of simply clicking on a couple files (recompile.bat and startclient.bat).
For similar reasons MCP did not enable demo mode even though you are playing the game without an account since it would seriously hamper testing when you can only play in Survival mode on one seed, and in some cases, the limited time (I often reuse the same world multiple times, deleting region files to regenerate terrain so I don't need to create a new world and teleport to the coordinates). I presume that Open to LAN and NBT editors still work but those complicate the process. Mojang probably lets MCP do this since you need to use the official launcher to download all the assets the game needs (just trying to run the jar, which can be downloaded without an account, by itself does nothing, not even an error).
I could see this being an issue if you are making a modpack (installing mods you got somewhere else, not making the actual mods yourself); I once tried installing Forge mods in MCP and it just crashed the game (I added an ore that dropped an item added by another mod and I wanted to verify that it worked without having to reobfuscate/mod the jar (it was a non-Forge mod, using the MCP version of Forge); this was in the glory days of 1.6, when you could do this by simply specifying a number to drop, not even "Item.xxx.itemID"; the game didn't even complain when I tried mining it without the mod, it just dropped nothing).
I admit it wasn't the best example to provide on my part, though this launcher is pretty much terrible for anything except simply playing the latest version, which really hampers it. Even trying to do something slightly technical including just knowing why your game crashed is much more of a pain then it should be.

I don't want to like the new launcher. It's just unnecessary fluff that uses more resources while adding nothing to the game. It was perfectly fine before. Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I keep all my minecraft versions in separate folders with separate launchers and the new launcher goes to the default
