I got the new launcher just today. No problems at first, but I ran into problems when I changed the game directory. The old launcher used to set up an entirely new directory for you. The new launcher doesn't do that. So unless I manually set up a new directory, which might be a pain, it's just going to crash on launch. If you play with mods and used a different directory than the default then this might also be the cause of some of the problems some of you are experiencing.
On my brother's computer, you get to the minecraft launcher, and you click the PLAY button thingy for minrcraft, and it says ERROR : ( Failed to download blah blah blah realms (something probably for his realm). And then you dont go anywhere. Like, come on mojang, why are YOU STOPING people from playing MINECRAFT!?!?! 'Cause mojang is apparently supposed to like, own & run minecraft!
Are people supposed to have the new launcher? because I don't.
I came to say the same. I have gotten a notice at the top of the launcher like this...
...but I've gotten something similar in the past so I didn't think much of it until I saw this post, as this seems like it pertains to this whole new launcher and not just a new version of the old one. Does this mean I'll be updated at random to the new one? I'm somewhat worried now since those trying to use Forge/mods are seeming to have a higher chance of stuff not working.

I wonder who added that issue in the launcher, because whoever did that needs to be fired or go through a training lesson on how to bug-test something. Utterly ridiculous that the bug got through.

Hmm. With everyone here, it has been mandatory- a forced download, persay.

Update: The new launcher won't automatically create the folder, but it will automatically set up everything in the folder if you already created a blank folder for the directory. If doing it with mods, set up the directory with a vanilla version of MC, then switch over to forge. I found this out after doing a little bit of testing. If this fixes your problem, I'd like to know.
Then explain why Microsoft wanted to sue this guy all because he modded his Xbox console. Also, I love how you made fun of me and my post, not like you do that to other people on here as well.
Because modding a console and modding a game are two completely different things.
Modding a console usually breaks a console's warranty, which means you can't take it to Microsoft to fix it, and if the console can still get online after being modded, WOAH GUYZ WE CAN DOWNLOAD C00L HAX ON THIS XBOX AND WE WON'T GET BANNED HECHHECHHECHHECH because if you build it into the OS or a part of the system the Anti-Cheats won't detect, noobs will be destroyed.
Microsoft probably just wanted to make sure nobody was installing hacks from COOLXBOXHAX107.COM, so they leaped at the first opportunity.

Also, I thought the launcher was still an optional beta at this point. Guess I'm wrong. Will check out later, since I haven't played MC in months.

[insert obligatory beta comment here]
BUT. If Mojang/Microsoft/IDK anymore are pushing beta content toward the masses instead of making it optional until it's ready (if this still is in beta), then Microsoft dun screwed up.

It technically still is a beta, yet people that do not want the beta are receiving it at random. Also, you can't play Minecraft offline anymore. Literally, if you attempt to load the launcher without an internet connection, it just crashes at the updating screen. Yet it works fine if I am connected to the internet? Seems like some sort of DRM was built in to the launcher, probably by Microsoft.
I can't get on to my realm and the servers I am always able to get onto with this new launcher. Like, whoever thought forcefuly giving us a beta launcher would make our minecraft lives great!! Now, for me its more like boredom, as most of my minecraft time i was on realms and servers. Ugh! I hope mojang fixes things up REAL SOON.

Enough with Microsoft, they have nothing to do with this. Believe it or not but Mojang is also capable of mistakes, not just Microsoft.
When I try to start minecraft on my brothers computer (when my computer is out of battery and my dad is using the charger) it says "failed to download file. realms-1.10.13.jar" I tried a few times and it still sas that. can someone please help me?

Please post a thread in the Support forum section:
You really need to let this whole Microsoft thing go, because as numerous people have already pointed out: Microsoft has changed nothing about the development of Minecraft, they only bought Mojang.
I like to keep my files separate from the Windows drive so I run Minecraft on a different drive to the default C:\Users path, this makes backups and resource pack development easier for me.
Anyway the new launcher didn't copy over any of my profiles, being a resource pack developer meant I had two for each major version of Minecraft (with and without OptiFine) all for testing, plus I had some profiles for older CTM maps I was still playing on and off that don't work on newer revisions of Minecraft.
I have not lost any of saves, I would just have to recreate all the profiles again in the new launcher, the new launcher is clunky to use and should not have been pushed out so soon without a lot more testing.
The launcher is like a door to a great new world and the new launcher has locked that door for many people with its update errors and missing profiles.
So instead I decided to ditch the default launcher completely, I've now switched to MultiMC as that seems to have all the features I need.
The new launcher just appeared for me today. No warning, nothing, just "Here's the new launcher! Isn't it great?" Since I've barely used the default launcher in years, it doesn't really affect me too much, usually I'm using one of the mod pack launchers like Curse or Technic and at least Curse seems to use the old launcher to actually start the game.
But yeah, if I had a lot of profiles in the old launcher, or other things set up with it, I'd be a bit miffed.
I do like how the game output screen can be filtered so that it only shows errors, and the skin switcher looks much easier to use than the old method. Not that I switch skins ever, but I know people that do (because I have to help them every time) so that will make it less hassle. I didn't use it enough to see if there are any bugs or not though.

Also, I can play offline just fine.
I said that it is SOMETHING THAT MICROSOFT would do. I DID NOT say that Microsoft did it specifically. Stop targeting me, and stop twisting my words around.
Also, explain exactly how you can use your launcher offline, without it crashing like this video shows.

How are they twisting your words around? If you did not have the intention of insinuating that Microsoft directed or influenced Mojang to release the new launcher in that state, then why even bring up Microsoft?

FINALLY some other people actually know what they're talking about concerning the status of Mojang and Microsoft.
