Waddup guys?! I have a brief question about the new Cartographer (when they come out) announced at Minecon 2016! So when they come out, will I have to look for a new village? Or they can spawn in the many villages I found in my world LOL! Thanks and just tell me I'm excited for 1.11 The Exploration Update!
I need to know by the full release of 1.11 (because it's Realms) I really want to find a Woodland Mansion and a Ocean Monument without having to wander around not knowing where it is, thx!
Farmers, fletchers and shepherds all have the same cloak (brown with no apron), so I imagine cartographers will share librarian traits and also have a white tunic. But I don't think they're just going to drop into the towns of your Realms world that you've already explored, they'll only appear in new villages in unexplored areas (or they may appear when you breed villagers). Same for the Woodland Mansions, they'll most likely appear in wooded areas that you haven't yet explored.
I guess the 20-dollar question is this: Will cartographer maps point to areas in pre-1.11 worlds where a Woodland Mansion would have spawned if that area hadn't already been explored? It would be a rip-off to get a treasure map that points to your old cow barn, lol.

Ayy, make sure you guys tell me if Cartographer maps point to areas in pre- 1.11 worlds!
So um it's been quite a bit, do you know now? Sorry to rush you. I have a 1.10 generated Survival realm and I really don't want to have to make a new world to get the new Woodland Mansion and Cartographer and the 2 new Maps!

A villager's "career" (i.e. whether the white-robed dude is a librarian or cartographer) isn't decided until the first time you open up the trading interface. In my world, I have a bunch of villagers that were bred in 1.7, but never traded with. One of the white-robed villagers became a cartographer when I traded with him, even though he's been in my world for years. So you definitely don't have to go to new areas to find them, you can always just breed new villagers, or sometimes even get one in your existing villagers if you're lucky and if you've never traded with them before.

It seems that a cartographer's map will always point to new (not-yet-generated) terrain. So you won't get any treasure maps that point to your old cow barn. You also won't get any that point to your guardian farm, or any ocean monument or wodland mansion that you've already explored. I did some testing yesterday, and here's what I found:
- Each cartographer sells one ocean map and one woodland map. Once the trades are generated, they do not change; each individual cartographer sells the same two maps over and over.
- All cartographers in one area sell the same maps as each other (different map #'s, but they show the same structure.) You can get a dozen different cartographers in the same village, and they will all sell you identical maps that show the same structure. Cartographers in different parts of the world sell different maps, showing different structures.
- After you've explored the region on a map, cartographers from that village will sell you a new map with a different structure.
...so it seems that each map points to the nearest, undiscovered structure of the given type. So you can get all the different maps, from a single village, as long as keep breeding new cartographers (for new map #'s) and exploring the old ones' areas first (so the new maps will be different than the old ones).
I have a world save I started back when 1.8 snapshots started. I only play this world save in snapshots. And a few villages I found back in the 1.8 snapshots had at least 1 cartographer. The only thing you need in the village before you update is at least 1 librarian. He might become a cartographer just like a few of mine did.

I explored a Woodland Mansion without a Cartographer, so free extra Mansion for me...?
So i found a nice solution to getting all the trades of villagers at one town. I got super lucky and found a town and not 100 blocks from that a hole in the ground with a zombie spawner. I gated off the spawner so i could kill them safely while waiting for zombie villagers to spawn. once a zombie villager spawns i have him run through to another gated area where hes separated and cure him. once cured i open the gate let him wander himself into town. i have every kind except for the cartographer and a nitwit......if this world was created before the 1.11 update can i not get cartograhers.... Also im playing consol version and have never once seen a nitwit any pointers please.

You can:
Unless cartographers have different from other villagers' rules of spawning =)

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
I'm new to this forum.
I searched in the internet YouTube and here how can u find the villager "cartographer" and I found nothing.
so i spawned like 200 villagers and NO ONE of them was cartographer.
i'll be happy if someone can help me.
Thank You.
(sorry if my english isn't good)
In which version did you try to find it?
16w41a
Try in 16w42a - the second white robed villager I spawned (with the spawn egg) was a cartographer
ok thx
They will show up in old villages.
