According to the Upcoming Features page on Minecraft Wiki, they're going to make it so that block states will be used in commands, so
/setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:wool 11
will be
/setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:blue_wool
This change wasn't in 16w20a, so that either means they're still working on it, or they're not going to do it at all and just haven't announced it.
So why do I think that the change shouldn't be put in?
Well, as a map maker, I know that it gets really annoying whenever Mojang change how certain commands work that then breaks a lot of things in maps. In 1.8 they changed it so that blocks could no longer be placed in adventure mode and tools could no longer be used, thus requiring CanDestroy and CanPlaceOn tags to be put on placeable blocks and tools that could break certain blocks.
That might not seem like much, but in 1.9 they changed how so many different datatags work including Equipment, Riding, and a lot of the monster spawner tags, to newer ones. That broke things even more than 1.8 did.
So if it means that you can no longer use commands like /setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:wool 11 in 1.10... see what I'm implying?
It will break every command block that uses /setblock, /fill, /give, among others, and will also break /summon mobs that have custom equipment - all of which I use in immense volumes in my maps. Can you imagine how much boring updating that would cause for mapmakers?
So, Mojang, if you are reading this... please don't change this: /setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:wool 11
To this: /setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:blue_wool
You don't play with mods, do you? Basically, Mojang change stuff in Minecraft that breaks other stuff made by others for Minecraft all the time...sure, some people complain a bit and sometimes the changes really are truly brutal (RP2 and the 1.3 update for example). But, Minecraft evolves and the content creators either adapt or fade away. This is a fact of life in the eco system that is Minecraft and just as in nature, darwinism works here too. You either adapt or you don't, if you do you have a better chance to survive but if you don't...well, the dinosaurs would have a lot to tell you about that....
That is, the dinosaurs could tell you about it and hadn't failed to adapt and died out. Also, they had very small brains so you'd probably have a hard time teaching them to communicate in a language complex enough to grasp the concept of evolution so you could ask them to tell you all about not adapting and then actually get a response, one that doesn't sound like an Arnold Schwarzenegger , all while trying to not get eaten (yeah, you could have picked a herbivore but chances are their brains are even less adapt at problem solving than a carnivore's/hunter's brain is, just like vegans*) but if you did have a dino, taught it a language, asked it a question and go a discernible answer then obviously the dino did adapt and obviously it's much more intelligent than we thought it was so why are you even asking it about not adapting when it obviously have no experience to draw from, are you by chance a vegan?
*No, I'm not serious. Most vegans I've encountered have IQs way over 1002.
As a map maker you have it easier than most other content creators...your map will still work just the way you inteded it to work, with the version of Minecraft you made it for and if it works, why update it? They made it very easy to play any version of Minecraft you want for a reason and people switch versions to play maps they like all the time. Heck, people still play ancient versions of Minecraft to play with mods they love but that never got updated...updating for the sake of updating is just silly.

Sometimes, sacrifice is needed to make something better.
This part of the update is there to make it easier for people to create maps
Why should you update a map? Is that realy neccesary?
Well, if you wanna add something to the map that is from the update, then it is neccesary to update.
But if the map is finished, then you don't need to update the map.
Just tell the players to change the minecraft version to an another version.
This update is something that is for the future maps, not the old maps that already exist.
If we stick to the old maps, we wil get bored of it, and we wil to the end stop playing it.
So, why should you update a map. Every map, game, movie, book, etc. wil to the end "die off".
But, if you are that guy who love playing old maps on new version or just wanna add stuff from the new update to the map, I can suggest that Mojang let us use both types of commands:
/setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:wool 11
or
/setblock <x> <y> <z> minecraft:blue_wool
So, my conclusion is: If its not neccesary, then don't update the map. But if it is actually neccesary, then update the map, and if it gives you problems, then suggest Mojang to let you use both types of the commands.

I sort of expected they would. Much like how gamemode accepts both /gamemode 1 and /gamemode c.

I'm sorry that your commands will go obsolete, but this isn't thinking about the present. This is thinking for the future.
If you are planning to make a suggestion, please read this.

For those who complain about post-Beta generation, you might want to see this.

Help the Villagers to get jobs!
How to beat mobs at night:
1. Learn how the mobs behave
2. Use both hands
3. Have at least Iron Armor better
4. Do at least use Iron Sword or better
5. Hide in the bushes to suprise them
6. The mobs don't know whats behind them

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
