Theres been a few security and bug fix patches but no new snapshots for content or content listed as coming out on the launcher. There used to be new stuff in snapshots alot and all patches added content until then. Is content development finished for good?
Maybe there was new content and they just didn't list it in the launcher? But they do say it was security and bug fixes. New content in patches was always listed on launcher before.
I recall Mojang saying nothing was changing with regards to content and patches rate other than a minor setback while sale was in progress so this was surprising to see nothing released in so long.
Things take time. And when you need to update a game and live life at the same time, things take even more time.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
another part of the long wait is the fact that a while ago they asked the community for ideas for the combat update, and that would suggest they would give that some time to run before releasing any snapshots as to give us the freedom to make whatever suggestions we could think of
I usually don't believe in coincidence but I can't help noticing how snapshot releases completely stopped as soon as Microsoft bought Mojang. Correlation doesn't imply causation, of course.
The "development takes time" argument is invalid, though: this game is been in constant development since at least 2009, and it never had such a long content-less lull. I don't know what, but it has to mean something, you just can't shrug off this obvious anomaly as if it was business as usual.
The easiest explanation would be to repeat the previous statement of "they are revamping the combat system". It will take time to do that, and they likely want a lot of it done before they even attempt to release it to the public. A long wait before a big update is better than short, quick updates that come out often, and add in very little finished content.
Id prefer it if they put one major update per year with performance and bug fixes on a monthly basis. The old update mill was exhausting and drained some energy from fanbase i think....even though going to a slower update speed is causing withdrawal symptoms. The more sinister explanation to updates slowing of course is due to the acquisition...
It has been 9.5+ months with only a half dozen teasers and very little official information. I can't say the modding community has done any better. Only half of our Forge mods are updated to 1.8 and there has been very little in the ways of Bukkit mods rewriting for SpongePowered as it is still being developed. 1.7 came out in October of 2013 and we are still on that release.

I wasn't talking about OP. Anyway.
They don't have to anything. They are updating Minecraft for free yet people are still dying to find a reason to complain. Just wait and see what this thread becomes. It's going to be full of nostalgic 12 year-olds complaining about how bad minecraft is now.

Well from what it looks like, we're getting:
- A complete overhaul of combat.
- A redone Enderdragon fight
- Shields
- Quivers
- An inventory revamp with slots for shields and quivers
- Spears(?)
- New arrows
- A new block
- A new block type
- Turtles
- A new dungeon-like structure
- Corn(?)
- Another thing that I probably missed
This stuff takes time. 1.9 is looking to be one of the biggest updates since, well, ever (not counting 1.0 but technically that was a game release, not an update). And they haven't even announced everything they're adding. I'm not denying that this long period of no updates is unusual, but I don't think it's Microsoft slowing development, it's just a ton of new features.

Because thinking a game isn't as good as it was before, or isn't on the right track, is a sin.
Really, what do you want people who share my opinions to do? Rant about how fantastic the game is now, how perfect everything is, how things couldn't possibly get any better? The whole point of criticism (and I feel like I keep saying this, over and over and over) is to help game developers learn what the community thinks they should do. I don't hate Minecraft. Nobody who isn't a troll here hates Minecraft. All we're trying to do is help Mojang get one the right track, and what they should focus on and not focus on.

no, but complaining just because you want to throw a rock at mojang is certainly one.
"All we're trying to do is help Mojang get one the right track"
I thought our tastes were different? what is right for you isn't necessarily right for me. minecraft community likes to complain for no reason, and most of the "criticism" is based on nostalgia and nothing else. they are failing to understand that you can always downgrade to beta or alpha.
what do you think is going to happen if a developer reads this thread? he's most likely going to be annoyed, nothing else. he is not going to be like "oh I'm sorry, here, have a snapshot"
I'm sick of seeing a thread about how lazy mojang is every single day. I will not even argue about how pointless it is. you can downgrade, that's what I did and that's how I learned the reason minecraft is not as fun as before has nothing to with minecraft, it's pure nostalgia. I still don't like the biome temperature system for example, but I know making a thread and complaining isn't going to solve anything.
have a good day, I will not reply anymore. arguing about this thread is just as pointless.
They need to get more people on the PC team or get the dev teams balanced out. As it stands right now there are about 7 developers on the Pocket Edition including Jeb. PC version has like what, 4 people now ever since TheMogMiner left (or got fired)? Grum and Searge more or less are behind the scenes doing crap, so it's effectively only Dinnerbone and Jeb producing content.
If any of them are busy or have to attend something I'd imagine the development becomes severely gimped. I wish TheMogMiner stayed, because despite his temper and how bad he appears to be at PR, he did quite a lot for the time he was there.
Whatever happened to TheMogMiner? Was he fired for his temper?
I don't think the exact details were ever stated by Mojang, but judging from his attitude around the time it would appear he was fired. Last I heard he's a Candy Crush Saga dev or something now.
Probably should have put a (?) next to that one. It's speculation because in the image in one of the tweets, there is what appears to be a turtle in the background. Also another tweet compared the End to A'tuin, the great turtle, which is an odd reference to make unless they're hinting at something.

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
All we're getting right now are pics, hints and treasure hunts.

I don't agree 1.9 looks like a huge update, at least right now because most of the new stuff is still in the "maybe" department. But even if it was large, there were many large updates in the past, such as beta 1.8 or release 1.7 and many more, and this is the first time we're not getting any unfinished previews for beta testing. Of course Microsoft buying Mojang could have no correlation with this, but "this is a large update" is not a good explanation either.

I think we're not getting any snapshots because they are completely redoing combat, there's no point in giving us a snapshot where the feature that is the main theme doesn't work.

Right now, they'd most likely do some major reworking in the code, considering the Combat Update will have major changes in combat.
In order to not completely ruin the game, Mojang will try to make it as perfect as they can, thus taking their time.

Perhaps they are actually testing things themselves right now instead of releasing snapshots. An old fashion release perhaps?
Praise be to Spode.
Couldn't have said it any better myself.

a quick snapshot = "OMUGUD IT'S LAGGY AND BUGGY MOJANG SUCKXS"
a snapshot = "OMUGUD NOTHING IMPORTANT MOJANG SUCKXS"
no snapshot = "OMUGUD THEY'RE LAZY MOJANG SUCKXS"
ugh. minecraft community.

Eccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
They are currently working on 1.9, also titled "Combat Update" so, yea they are pretty busy since they are revamping the entire combat system.
