Gone are the infinite oceans of old, say hello to temperature based biome generation and infinite forests. All those neat new biomes and you'll barely ever see a good chunk of them unless you use a seed specifically for that purpose.
This is why I set Biome Size to 1 on the new 1.8 World Generator. These forests have been here since 1.7. 1.8 actually allows you to do something about them.
It can be a bit of a pain to find different biomes since biome placement is now placed next to other similar temperature biomes but it adds realism and makes for better transitions between biomes. It also gives an incentive to explore to reach these lands.
I do wish there was an end game item that made travel between really remote locations quicker though. I know the nether somewhat serves this purpose but it still takes 20+ minutes to get to/from vastly separate areas at end-game. Hopefully Mojang will add something to facilitate far end game travel (and more far-end game stuff in general). It is badly needed.

If you want to get really crazy about long-distance travel you make a tunnel up to the roof of the nether and make a tunnel network with some kind of speedy transportation built in (lots of food/ice floor/sprint-jumping, horses with speed potions, etc.). Done right it would take a minute or so to go tens of thousands of blocks.

I want to thank you for this post.
Changing the biome sizes to 1 really makes the worlds more diverse, and a lot cooler!

I agree. Since 1.7 the land is just bland now with the same biome(s) over and over again, with the others being extremely rare. (Jungles are also very rare now. )

While that is somewhat due to the temperature biome changes, I think it's also because there were many people who were vocal about their hatred of Jungle's...."it's hard to move in", "you have to clear it to build anything", "it lags my computer", "if I start a world and it's a jungle I delete it", "when I see a jungle I burn it with fire", etc, etc. Well seems we now have the other end of the extreme. Why else would I still find deserts which seemed to be popular because they are generally flat and contain villages, but hardly ever find a jungle?
I for one would like oceans to be a bit larger than they are now too, however I never had a problem with them before either so I was in the minority there I think.

The deserts are both 5K blocks from spawn.
Kind of realistic? Barely.
Definitely incredibly boring though.

Figured it was time for a change.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
