I suppose that, if you have a friend who also bought minecraft and does have the 1.8.1 update, you can copy their version to an USB drive and copy it back to your pc. Just go to C:\users\*Username*\Appdata\Roaming\.Minecraft and put the 1.8.1 folder in a compressed zip file (with "send to > compressed (zipped) Folder)).
The Appdata folder might be hidden, so you'll need to have "show hidden files and folders" turned on in the folder options menu.
These folders are hidden for a reason though, so if you don't know too much about computers, have someone who does look over your shoulder.
Then put the zip file on a usb stick and copy it back to your game.
I haven't tested it out myself, so this is all theoretical. I see no reason why it wouldn't work though.
Just wondering, dumb question, how do you show hidden files? I already know how to get to my %appdata% folder, but it would be nicer for me to have the folder visible.
I was purposely avoiding that, because hidden folders are usually the kind of folders that can mess things up if something goes wrong.
Now that you've been warned though:
I assumed you have windows here (If you don't, I sadly can't really help you)
If you do, then in Windows 7 in explorer there is an "Organize" button.
If you click it it brings up a dropdown menu. One of the options is "Folder and search options"
If you have windows XP, you can go here with Tools > Folder options, and I believe in windows 8 it's View > Options.
They all lead to the same window though, so from there go to View > Hidden files and folders > Show hidden files and folders.
They hit Apply and OK and you should be good.
Thanks, I don't usually mess with something unless I know what i'm doing, so it's mostly for the %appdata%.
You can't just copy the 1.8.1 folder; there are libraries and assets that the game needs to work, which is what the "1.8.1.json" file is for, it tells the launcher what the game needs to run; if you just copy the 1.8.1 folder the launcher will try (and fail) to download the required files, so you really do need to connect to the internet at least once, or copy over the entire .minecraft folder from another computer (be sure that you merge them and don't just replace it as your world saves are also saved here, may want to back them up just in case, and don't copy over a friend's folder).
You actually do. Because of that he added "in my house" to "I do not have internet". There are ... other places one can go to the internet than from his own computer at home.
And I am guessing he can't download from the other place because its too slow?
I thought all you had to do was press on edit profile folder and choose which update you want. I not sure if it works for you but it works for me (I think because I've always been online.)
If Windows: Go to a friend's house who has internet and Minecraft. Then take a flash drive and browse to your .minecraft Folder. Then go into the versions folder and copy the 1.8.1 file onto the flash drive. Then all u have to do is place that file in your own .minecraft/versions folder!
If Mac: Do the same but your files will be located at "/Users/(YOUR USERNAME)Library/Application Support/minecraft/versions"
Hope this Helps. If not. Just reply and Ill try helping u get other ideas.

To get 1.8 you need to download the version from somewhere, be it a friend's computer or broadcasting WiFi out of your phone and connecting to that, but you need some way to connect the launcher to the internet.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
