Regarding the newest update to Minecraft: Release 1.8.2-pre1
Has this version alleviated any lag problems you may have been having with the 1.8.x series so far?
I have tested it with a fresh install under that version and a brand new world: I get 1 to 2 fps, not any noticeable improvement over 1.8 or 1.8.1. How about you? (This is with the default 1.5.3 installer, not any experimental versions)
* I want to discern any improvements created by this version update separate from any other factors.

I'll check it out right now with default Minecraft settings and all of the "optimizations" turned on. I'll let you know.
My experience was pretty much exactly what you just described.... Spawned by water it was rough 0-5 fps and freezing. Moved inland away from all the water and I got 0-15 fps which fluctuated wildly. Very inconsistent and low fps.
I have the latest 64-bit java installed. Minecraft default settings, except "launcher close on start-up" enabled to improve performance. All 1.8 optimizations "On." My PC also exceeds Mojang's recommended specs.
For me 1.8.2-pre1 is better than 1.8.1 since I was getting constant frame rate stuttering when walking around. Those are gone but there is still some stutter and frame rate drops here and there. Optifine by far still gives me the best performance.
I've managed to stabilize my fps at about 15 fps for 1.8.1 by setting my fps from unlimited to 60 fps. Don't ask me why it works, but it seems to make the lag spikes less severe. The game still grinds and performance is poor, but it's a slight improvement. I can slowly load chunks now...
I also have all of my other settings set to minimum. Might be worth a try.
In 1.8 to 1.8.1, I averaged around 5 to 10 fps but had a range of 1 to 15 fps. In 1.8.2 Pre-1, I'm back in the 40 to 60 fps on average range with very little below 40 fps and decent amount over more than 60 fps and much smoother gameplay with a single tiny lag spike every once in a while.

I'm very glad to hear that it has helped someone! That is with the same version of Java you used previously, using the normal launcher and without Optifine right? If so then you should add your result to the pole above. Thanks for sharing your info.

Lol, I feel like we're all waiting around to win the lotto XD !
At least things appear to be slowly moving in the right direction.
Same as 1.8.1, a constent minecraft slideshow of 1-5 FPS when standing, and it goes even worse to 2 FPS when walking.

No real change, still hanging around ~30 FPS. This is a ~4yo Pavilion dv6-3010us laptop running an external 1680x1050 screen, Java 8u25 x64, Win7, so either a lot of people have worse machines than this even, or it's just completely unpredictable how it will perform...
1.8 as a whole has slightly improved things from 1.7.

I have the latest Java version, but that didn't make any fps difference in 1.8.1. I don't use Optifine. My PC is 64 bit- if that helps. I read a lot of comments on 1.8.2 Pre-1 and almost all of them were about how there was little to no difference in lag and worse lag since 1.8.0 to 1.8.1. I was kind of afraid to try it out. A few days later, I decided to try it out, but after making a back-up of my world. After so many negative comments: literally over 80% of tons of comments that were negative, it made me suprised that it actually helped me a ton. Usually things don't like to work out for me. xD Btw, just voted before making this post.
For me it was about the same as the rest of 1.8... It was not visually noticeable but the max fps it varies to is better, but still keeps average 35-45. max being 55 +/- 5...
1.7 I just could not really play much since the fps was at 10 average. So the VBO option is what helped me.

Not that it truly matters, I am just glad i am able to run it as the fps I had with 1.3.2 with another laptop that was lower spec.

May I also suggest adding a poll?

Major increase from 1.7 with Optifine to 1.8 without Optifine. How are y'all getting lag. No difference though between 1.8 and 1.8.2 pre1
