Okay i just downloaded the new version 1.8 and it lags very bad in survival mode and not in multiplayer mode its just wierd...and since optifine for 1.8 hasnt came out yet. i dont know i just dont so please quote me so i can know you replied.
I haven't tried it in Multiplayer but a new world in 1.8 is like playing in glue. I have a pretty old PC but it plays Minecraft in most situations fairly lag-free. In 1.7.10, I can use World Edit happily without any slowdown etc but 1.8 so far is a little painful for me to play.
You guys should try turning on that new option in the video settings called VBOs. For some players it helps raise the fps, and I've heard for some it actually lowers it. Maybe it will help you guys

I have a very solid computer and I'm getting an immense amount of lag. I've never bothered to post before this, but I feel that this current issue merits registering and posting about it.
I played the last version of Minecraft with a zillion frames per second. Playing the new 1.8 version is extremely laggy -- sometimes I'm dropping to a frame rate of 10. To anyone claiming this is a hardware issue, this is very obviously a problem with the update. I can play Battlefield 4 at a frame rate of 150+ on Ultra.
It also now takes forever to load the world as I zoom around in Creative Mode. Please fix this.
I have an older computer I built in 2009 and I'm not experiencing lag on single player. I haven't tried SMP, so can't say there. I got a little lag for maybe a minute, but nothing out of the ordinary. Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones though, somehow.

Last update, I could run an okay FPS without Optifine,(I still use it because I want as much FPS as possible from this PC) and on mine, it's playable kind of, with frequent sudden frame drops. So much for their performance increases in 1.8.

Creepers are my worst enemy in Minecraft? No, that's Skeletons.
there is a new feature in this update for video. it is called VBOs toggle. Try turn it off and see if that helps lag. It is supposed to offer ~10% but may not for older PCs.
you can also try disabling Alternative Block toggle.
I have been playing on a world in creative and for me it lags when I'm flying up my skyscraper and I am pretty sure it has something to do with the lighting. When I turned vobs on I wen from a solid 4 FPS to a solid 9 FPS even turning graphics and smooth lighting down did not help.
the fps drop is horrible. standing still i get the usual 60 or so for me. start to move just an inch and it drops to 0 - 10fps. I really want to play 1.8, but the lag is not making it an enjoyable experience.
I hope they fix it soon. In the mean time, i'll be playing 1.7.10

Using 32 bit Java? See my sig.
(Java is not the cause btw, but 32 bit makes it worse)

? 1.8.0 "lag"/FPS problems? It's worse with 32 bit Java, use 64 bit Java.
Thank you
