Hi, I'm on Minecraft 1.9.2.
I have this huge...fear, slash problem here with Mycelium. I want to have a underground Mooshroom barn right under my cow barn. Thing is, I want the ground to be made out Mycelium. I fear that it spread out of control like a virus on my perfectly, politically correct backyard grass.
So, if I have:
Nothing or dirt/ Cobble /NOTHING\ Cobble/ Nothing or dirt
Nothing or dirt/ Cobble /NOTHIING\ Cobble/ Nothing or dirt
Nothing or dirt/ Cobble / Mycelium \ Cobble/ Nothing or dirt
------------------------------Nothing or dirt--------------------------------
Is there a chance that Mycelium spreads on the "Nothing or dirt" areas? This is just a raw, makeshift representation of this underground barn, the poor animals won't be living the rest of their lives in a one block wide corridor.

Alright, thank you for replying, I'll give it a try. I did look on the Wiki, but it was telling me about the spreading but when it said, one block anyways, I thought that even if it was correctly sealed with a cobblestone belt for example, it would, affect the cobble, where it would do nothing but still possibly hit the block after. Like when you try to touch something in real life away with a hand. The first and third finger won't reach it, but the middle one will...idk if you see what I mean.
Also, what's up with all those ads, aka Featured servers, or actual ads, on this forum? The movie ones make my PC slow down to the point that typing here is nearly impossible.
Mycelium only affects dirt so it will only spread if there is dirt close enough, if the dirt is far enough away it doesn't matter what is inbetween. (Except more dirt of course.)
If grass contacts mycelium it will overgrow it... soon no mycelium... not the other way around.
Both grass and mycelium can only spread to dirt (not including coarse dirt or podzol), so you can place them right next to each other and neither will spread to the other:
This code is from 1.8 (the same code is used for both blocks) but I have not seen any mention of changes in 1.9, and it has likely not been changed since long before 1.6.4, aside from not checking for the variant of dirt back then since there was only one variant.
It's not a change. The Wiki says/used to say that, and it's true. Place grass against mycelium and given enough time there will only be grass. That's why I use gravel to keep them separated.
Ask yourself why we need mushroom islands. Ever seen any grass on one?

Yes, all the time. They coexist quite well.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

According to the Wiki mycelium only spreads to dirt within 1 space sideways and upwards and up to 3 downwards so that looks safe.
If you want to be extra sure you could make the cobblestone 2 blocks wide.
Just testing.

I always have a giant mushroom farm... 11x11 gravel ring, then 9x9 & 7x7 grass rings, 5x5 gravel ring, and finally the center 3x3 is mycelium,
The mycelium nor the grass have ever crossed either gravel ring. Given a little time the mycelium overgrows the bare dirt after harvesting a mushroom.
If grass contacts mycelium it will overgrow it... soon no mycelium... not the other way around.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
