In my opinion, Minecraft is dead. This is due to servers failure to conform to the demands of it's players, and is also caused by Mojang failing to create new and fun to play content. I might change my mind when somebody comes up with something new. But what is your opinion? I would like to know.
I'm on a bit of a hiatus from playing Minecraft, so I'm not so active in this forum, either. I still check it though, and participate in a few discussions.

NO its not dead yet... i mean telltale games is going to release a story mode and they still have to make mod API and many more features will be added and even after all that the community will still keep the game alive.
Whether I play some video game or not is not dependent on what other people think about it, at least any farther than practical and logistical concerns. (ie. no public interest lowers chances of development, sequels, etc).

There's my post for the year. Whoopee. :/
Amen.
I couldn't care less about the size of the community.

If servers fail to conform to the demands of players, then the players will either strengthen their demands, or find a different server to play on. If the server owners have any interest at all in maintaining their player base, then they must conform or they will no longer have any players on their server.
"New" content...? So you're not even slightly satisfied with the huge 1,8 update? You sure are hard to please. >_>
"Fun to play" content...? Minecraft is a "sandbox" game. You create your own fun. Build a sand castle. Build a sand dune and jump off of it. Grab a friend and play king of the hill on that sand dune you just made and use that piece of driftwood as the flag. Or if your friend is a bad king of the hill player, then don't use one of your legs instead of both... Use your imagination, not that hard.
"I might change my mind when somebody comes up with something new." Ever heard of a mod?
And those statistics Alexcamostyle posted were enough, but I had to eviscerate your opinion, sorry.
Frankly, I am not having much fun anymore. I take increasingly long breaks from the game and only ever turn it on lately to play for nostalgia or with my baby cousins. I do not think the game is dead, the community does number in the millions after all, but I do think it's lost its spirit, and I think that is a product -of- the massive community.
There's been almost this 'dilution', where players interested in creating anything beautiful or interesting have been all but drowned out by the colossal group of players, new and old, who have no interest in anything but waiting for the next update and occasionally setting something on fire or cloning something they saw on Yogscast or Sky's LP videos.
The game does not have a goal, I cannot fault people for doing what they enjoy in the slightest, but I do feel that the game has lost its meaning to me over the years. Maybe it's also large changes in my life, like coming out to my parents as transgendered or moving to a new home and struggling to find my place in a hostile world, but overall it's hard for me to feel motivated to play or be involved in the community at anywhere near the level I used to.
Developmentally, the game is still pretty stagnant. May I remind the thread that the Modding API has been promised for two years, but never delivered? I don't know if it's still maintained, but last time I checked a very large mod had been released as almost an 'expansion' for Minecraft called Better than Wolves and was created to vent the frustration of a player who felt that the additions were superficial, unnecessary, and faddish and that they could have been done with much more grace. Personally I prefer Vanilla play, as it's less stressful on both my computer and myself, but I can understand the mindset born of waiting for update after update to a game in (then) perpetual beta, and being consistently disappointed.
Do I dislike Minecraft? Not at all. It's a fun diversion and something that brings my aunt and uncle and cousins and I closer together as a family. There's been so many collaborations and shenanigans and arguments and fistfights and reconciliations over this game between a group of five alone, to say nothing of everyone I've played with, those of them I kept in contact with far past the game, and all the monumental undertakings and petty squabbles of the community as a whole. Because for better or worse, we have become a community. And I'm grateful for that.

Forgive me for nitpicking, but this statement bothered me a lot. One of the major divisive forces in our community is the need to silence naysayers. It creates this sort of flock mentality, wherein someone's opinions are a target to be dismantled rather than respected and then artfully debated. I do not agree with OP's opinion, but I do respect his right to hold it, and while I will debate it to the sun goes down, I will not insult him or insinuate that his feelings are something to be picked apart for my own internet glory (back in mah day, we called it e-peen).
I feel that minecraft is going to be a difficult game to kill, and even when a majority of the player base moves on it's still going to shine for it's nostalgia value. Minecraft has made too large of an impact to ever really die.
Still plenty to do, our server has still had a steady flow of new players recently. I think you just need to find new places with new content for you to see and play.
You asked that question on the MC forum. What did you think the answer would be?
There's better, newer MC-like games than MC out there (yes, there really is), but the sheep here ignore the fact. (Remember, after all these years MC is old). Sure, I still play MC myself. But I play others more.
As a huge MC2 proponent, I don't think the question is "Is MC dead?" but rather "Isn't it way past time for a remake?".
How is it dead? Millions of people still play it everyday and your complaining saying that it's "dead". Dude! ur on minecraft forums and saying that.... smh
Think about it for a sec.
It's actually growing

Aeropulse Mod in the works. 1.8.1 Mod including many items you will recognize from many sci-fi games such as Mass Effect, Halo, Destiny, Half-Life and more! Updates on it will be announced once in a while!
Thanks for the support and let's keep working! <3 K.P. + E.M.
Ummm.no.I will give my beef with this topic, yes, the community will definetly keep this game alive,it has over 18,000 sales everyday, and top on the app store! But,i am worried about the mod usage,MInecraft can get boring without mods, and if they keep using Java(Which they most likely will),they WILL kill this game, its getting tougher to make mods, with good performance,1.8 did have the new chunk loading system, but that did not do much for lag issues.Mojang(or microsoft whatevs) keep programmming like this, there will be mods on older and older versions, the ones who do have mods will be introduced to bad performance, the creator of optifine has said something like this, but Minecraft will get boring if it continues with the way its shunning mods.I have been playing since 1.2.5,and i do not want this to die,but like Vulpixy said,it has maid too much of an impact to die.
I think Minecraft is the type of game that you always go back to playing year after year after year. Play it for a few months and you get bored, then one day you feel like continuing that build you left off some months ago and it's all of a sudden fun again. You stop playing again after a few months, but then you discover a new epic mod and you go back to playing it again and it's awesome again for a few months.
The two posts above this one raise a couple of interesting points.
Mods- to me they do nothing but prove PC MC needs them to be a worthwhile game. The basic, vanilla game is pretty bad, by today's standards. The console versions only work because they are on consoles. What if the PC was just like the consoles? No mods, easy-crafting only, no custom skins, and no skins at all except via DLC, etc. Would you PC-fanboys still play it? I doubt it.
The bottom line is the MC fanatics here will continue to stand by MC no matter what. They'll gripe, complain, whine, but they'll continue to play it.
By dead, I don't mean it's not selling. The game is selling well, all I am saying is that it is losing players faster than it is gaining them. I will continue to play as Mojang rolls out more updates.
I will not bother to explain.
Miner's nightmare preset
Miner's nightmare preset (original terrain)
Killing the Ender Dragon, no damage (no armor/potions/enchantments/pumpkin)
This is from minecraft.net/stats. Look how many people have bought the game just today! No way is it dead.
