I personally found Minecraft through YouTube 2 years ago and then bought the game. Could the game have been this successful without it's large presence on YouTube? I was wonder who else here in the Minecraft Forums found the game through YouTube.
I also did, I loved hunger games and MineCraft basically was the only game that had a actual game for it. So I started watching youtubers and eventually got into it!
If YouTube didn't exist, Minecraft would have highly unknown and I wouldn't have been posting on here right now as there wouldn't have been a Minecraft Forum.

Well stated. Very true as well. Minecraft is large because of YouTube
It also attracted a lot of kids to the game (i don't care about that) which most of the game's success is derived from. The kids are also a big reason for Minecraft popularity. But SkyDoesMinecraft (back in his 10,000 sub time when he was a lot better) introduced me to the game in 2012. I actually bought the game in 2013 (before I played pocket edition demos and some computer demos) and I now have all three editions of the game (PC, Mobile, and Console).

I certainly think that YouTube played a significant role in exposing Minecraft to a broader audience. In fact, I'd say social media as a whole assisted Minecraft in growing and becoming the game it is today, spreading word of the game, in a sense. As more and more people discovered the game, there's no doubt that the outreach of Minecraft grew even further.
Man, I remember the first time I seen an MC video. It was alpha and they were only in early stages. I bought the game and have been playing ever since I saw that video. I doubt MC would have been as successful, but then nor would most games without yt.

Youtube has had both positive and negative effects on Minecraft in my opinion. It has allowed for it's fan base to grow to absurd levels, but a lot of attention has been from kids younger than 10 who can't play the game to it's full potential. So much physics and circuitry based stuff is in the game, but probably 2/3 or more of the people who play Minecraft can't do simple redstone. Now Mojang is forced to make the game easier to appeal to it's younger audience, both through the how easy it is to survive and obtain OP equipment, and through decoration. It used to be hard to make things that look good in Minecraft due to the block choices. Now, with quartz and colored clay, anyone can make a building good. Minecraft is very popular indeed, but the demographics of it's fanbase seem to have forced Mojang to make the game much worse for adults and teens who liked the challenge (and fun) of earlier releases.
I first heard about minecraft from a good friend, but I became familiar with it through YouTubers like paulsoaresjr and ethoslab (I'm still subscribed to both of them )
I think that YouTube is the biggest factor in Minecraft's popularity, but I also think that its release on consoles like xbox and ps4, and on mobile devices, is what got non-PC gamers (curse them ) into minecraft.
You used the wrong effect in your title, it should be "effect", not "affect".
Damn it! I actually legitimately contemplated that one for a few minutes, didn't google it and thought I got it right, lol, now time to find out if I can edit the title.
Well said.
I used to have a good signature, but it got nerfed.
