Just look at it then and now. Back then it was challenging survival, we had great terrain with many mountains and it was so much more natural. Now, we have disgusting yellow/turqoise grass, flat biome-based terrain, and an OP enchanting system in which you could become invincible in a couple weeks. It's just way too easy now and not as exciting. I know it was Notch who coded Beta 1.8, but it's not like he couldn't have gotten Minecraft out of that horrible state.
Keep in mind that I started in 2012, not 2010. But I know what it was like back then.
EDIT: and don't say that I'm not happy with anything Mojang does. Cause I feel like they did a great job with managing Alpha and Beta. I won't go back to those versions because I'll be missing on the new content and not all new content is bad. But a lot of it is.
I am honestly sick of all these people complaining about new features sucking.
There will be parts of each version you will like, and parts that you will not like. You can't complain and pick and choose what features you want.
It's Mojang's game and if they think that this is a good direction to take the game, then I am behind them.
So play the new version or play the old version, but don't complain. Its just like the old runescape, ppl don't like the new one, so they play the old one.
For the most part Notch was good at coming up with ideas but he often never finished them or executed them horribly. The Ender Dragon for example never actually did proper damage to the player for about a year after Notch "Finished" The End, until it got on the bug tracker. The 1.8 terrain was supposed to have a temperature system but that fell between the chairs somehow despite there already being a system in place in during beta 1.7.
Personally what primarily bothered me most about the beta 1.8 transition was the new hunger system(I heard this was actually added by Notch). It seemed to almost make the game easier while more tedious at the same time and forced you to be too busy worrying about delaying a constant death clock rather than enjoying your world. (But then again I'm one of those people who simply can't stand time limits.)
Plus the magic elements could have been far better implemented as simply non-magical "tool upgrades" that added only 1-3 extra damage or just slightly faster mining. The whole magic addition itself just seemed to dramatically yank the whole game atmosphere toward something between utter cheesiness and an acid trip. I just wish Jeb could have kept up with the original theme rather than start ripping off elements of various fantasy games in what was originally a semi-serious, creative survival game. Even the new "Alex" character looks very closely inspired by Link.
And as far as Jeb or Notch go, I'm starting to feel that minecraft would have glided downhill eventually either way, Jeb far faster, Notch much slower.
As a side note: I do greatly appreciate the improved building mechanics(log rotation and such) plus far more blocks to get creative with.
If I have my history correct (maybe donèt) lots of the stuff widely complained about (the biome generation changes, enchanting) was in already in place before/while Notch left/was leaving, Dinnerbone just took lots of heat because people don't like change, and when there's a new head dev and changes you don't like there's alot to complain about.
I feel like survival is no longer "Fun" but then again I used world painter to make a custom world and am loving it ;D But anyway, I feel like it kinda was sad when he left but creative has been implemented SO MUCH take command blocks for example, learn them and you have a whole new world of fun ahead.

Well, I think I found what I'LL be in the after life. <3 Goats for life.
Well regarding command blocks and the things done to aide adventure map devolopers... I don't like them either. I feel they took out all the creativity of adventure maps. Hypixel (there're others, but I can't think of any right now and he is amazing) did some amazing things by taking advantage of NBT tags and 3rd party tools, but then came command blocks and it felt like anyone could do anything and nothing seemed unique anymore.
Why do you repeat yourself so much? You have at least four other threads that I have participated in that say basically the same thing. Old good. New bad. Not nostalgia!
It's like a broken record, except worse because the moment you hit ctrl+v or whatever your paste button is, you create a battle of relativity that solves nothing and makes everyone unhappy for the few minutes they read these threads.
I get it, dude. Anyone who knows you and your pattern gets it. You should know by now how these threads play out. You should know who stands with you and against you. You should even have statistics by now given how often you make these. Nothing's going to change no matter how many you make.
So you're basically blaming the rest of the team for things Notch did before leaving? You seem to realize all the b1.8 debatable choices where made by Notch himself, so I don't understand what your point is.
I agree, the game was much more based on survival back then. I have a Beta 1.7.3 world going right now and I'm liking it. The new Minecraft dev team is too confident in themselves so they just screw stuff up.
What is your point? You basically just made a thread to complain about how you like the old terrain better.
Mojang isn't going to revert to Beta 1.7 because a group of people don't like change when YOU CAN LITERALLY CHANGE YOUR GAME TO BETA 1.7 FROM THE LAUNCHER MENU.
you know... there are many posts like this and the only thing that comes to my mind when someone says " old minecraft was better!" is to tell them to downgrade their client and play the lower versions of the minecraft
obviously most of them miss the single player aspect ,so there shouldnt be a problem with then downgrading their mc client and playing mc beta single player survival
hell even i find my self most of the time playing 1.2.5 when i wish to play single player
True, though what I find is that many early version lovers don't so much like the old versions as it is the "style" and "the way things worked" that they wished were in the more modern versions.
For example: Imagine Beta 1.7.3 with all the new blocks and graphics updates(except with darker nights and better terrain color choice) we have today, plus the randomness and uniqueness of all the worlds with the new biomes added. This seems somewhat similar to what many beta players are after, not so much a regression but instead building upon what was already there in the beta/alpha times instead of taking the game a whole new direction than what they originally paid for and enjoyed. (I'm not saying all early version lovers started in those times, there are many who have tried and liked them long after the beta period.)

Miss the old minecraft food system? Here's a mod to help.
but ya i play 1.4 beta (or 1.5 before tall grass) but ya minecraft is not the same as it was back then i dont care what these beta 1.8 noobs say they never got to play the game back in the glory days when the updates where the newest thing for the game. but heck the community back then was 1000 times better then now and there were barely any little kids at that time.. but then when beta 1.8 came the game went off with out a hitch and it never looked back at its roots and just sucks now its a borefest

I'm from back in Alpha, personally I think that the additions are mixed. Some are OP, some are just right. Heck when you think about it, beds are OP, can you imagine how survival was before you could set your spawn? And I disagree with the terrain generation, the 1.8 generation is really good in my mind, although there are too many roofed forests. Go back and play the versions that your talking about and see if they really are as good as you remember.
If you want a good challenge just do this. /gamerule naturalRegeneration false
I miss Notch because he seemed like a great guy. He was a creative person, and even when he rose to fame he didn't become less human. And he had integrity; it's no coincidence that there are no Minecraft advertisements or web banners. With Microsoft buying Mojang, it feels like a little of that humanity has left Minecraft. I shall definitely continue to play the game, but I will certainly miss Notch

Notch announced, after launch, he was stepping down as lead developer and we got Jeb full time. Their was much rejoicing!
Then the next update came out and we got to read, "Jeb is wrong for Minecraft! He is ruining it because XXX!"
"We want bug fixes!"
"Why is their no new content today....We should have had content today, and tomorrow, and the next day whaaaaaaaa!"
"This is taking to long for my free updates! I want my API! They should hire the Bukkit people!"
So Mojang hires the bukkit peoples.
And the next week
"Dinnerborn and Grub are ruining minecraft whaaaaaaa!"
Guess it is true. Haters gotta hate.
