It can be difficult for us commoners to fathom just how much money a billion is. So, if you need to see more than just a figure to fully digest the kind of wealth Notch got fromselling Minecraft to Microsoft for $2.5 billion (yes, billion with a B), just take a look at his new Beverly Hills mansion. This is the house Minecraft bought, people: a $70 million estate with its own cinema, iPad-controlled fountains, automated glass doors, a panoramic view of LA and, best of all, a candy room, which is exactly what it sounds like. That amount includes all the expensive furniture and 90-inch TVs displayed in the mansion, along with cases of Dom Perignon champagne, because you don't celebrate buying houses like this with Two Buck Chucks.
Markus Persson (Notch's real name) apparently paid cash for the eight-bedroom, 15-bath property, six days after closing the deal. According to Bloomberg, Notch outmaneuvered and outbid interested celebrities, including Jay Z and Beyonce, whotoured the house several times in the past few months. Then again, Jay and Bey are reportedly worth only $1 billion together, while Notch's net worth is between $1.5 to $2 billion. We'd look at other pictures of the property on its website, but we're too busy thinking of a billion-dollar idea to sell Apple/Microsoft/Facebook in the future.
Information came from engadge (see page for more pictures)
Wow, That is one lucky man. He Outbid Celebrities for that house as well.

Never thought Notch was the kind of guy to give in to his wealth. However, it is HIS money, so...
I worry for him now. A mansion requires a lot of upkeep. And it'll probably have a lot of rooms that will go unused... It's creepy what happens to a person when they feel that they're financially independent and don't need to work...

When they -feel-? Notch never needs to work again, he doesn't just -feel it-. $2,500,000,000 is a lot of money. As long as he doesn't invest in Burnie Madoff's new scheme (too soon late?) he should be good.

He didnt get 2.5billion. Mojang did. But as a majority shareholder of Mojang, he did walk away with over a billion.
Also, for anyone who wants to say $70million is a waste. Consider that given at least he has a billion dollars, imagine he only had $1000, and he bought the house for $70.
I can imagine the look on JayZ and Beyonce's faces when they found out some computer nerd from Sweden outbid them. . Notch basically pulled the rug out from below their feet, lol.

Umm, no. Mojang is what was sold. Mojang didn't "get" any money. But the majority shareholder part is correct. Once the deal was finalized Markus stepped down, resigned, quit, whatever you want to call it.
i feel old and jaded when my first thought was, "oh crap... Now he's going to owe how much in inflated property taxes every year?". My second thought was, "Wow, did he have a Visa/permanent resident alien status previously, or did they just hand him one at customs?" It took me over 2 and 1/2 years to get my green card, but then again I didn't have a billion dollar net worth to help convince INS my application needed priority/urgency. Get that guy stateside quick! We need him buying stuff so we can collect some taxes!

Hey, he's got to invest some of that money somehow. Might as well be real estate.
(Wonder who owned the house before (Notch bought a 'used' house?) or was it new? Why didn't he build a custom house??)
To heck with Notch. I'd be happy just to be the realtor that closed the deal. The commission would be.... "instant retirement"!
Notch is a greedy and selfish. First he completely quit Minecraft at the end of 2011; that was bad enough. Probably the sole reason of why Minecraft never got back the Beta glory days. Then he SOLD Minecraft for 2.5 billion dollars. Now he buys a huge mansion just for himself using 40% of the money when he only worked on Minecraft for two years. AWGGH

Y'know? I bought Minecraft because I thought it was a war game where you had to create tactically placed proximity explosive devices...

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
