Minecraft is currently one of the best selling PC games out there. And I was there watching the population grow and grow from pretty much the start. But now it seems the population is in decline. Now let me try to explain this, I don't really play on things like tekkit feed the beast etc. I'm talking strictly normal minecraft no mods. It seems that normal large servers like shotbow network multiple youtubers servers etc, has gone down in population. Also the number of people who browse the minecraft forums has significantly decreased over the last year or so. Normal vanilla and bukkit servers aren't as common to see with a decent population anymore. I remember I could just go to a random vanilla server and there would be atleast 15+ people on most servers. Now a lot of the servers I see have almost noone playing on it and like I said the big servers have decreased in population by quite a bit. I know that people leave the game, that's how it goes, but is the number of people leaving now larger than the amount of people buying the game/coming back? I think it is, and with the way it seems now it's just going to continue to get smaller and smaller until hardly anyone plays and hosts their own servers. Like I said I don't play on like tekkit so idk has everyone just switched over to these modded servers and just abandoned vanilla? I quit playing for a few months and coming back it's a shame to see so few people playing. What is everyone elses thoughts on this? I know a lot of people are worried about microsoft taking over but that's not really a concern I have.
The new EULA made some players mad, especially modders. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some of the community leave, but I don't think the fad will die off soon.
Eh, sort of but not really. While consoles do provide what the minecrafter needs, texture packs and skins cost money. The PC version is still populated, but a lot of servers have gone down due to bukkit being dropped. Same thing with modding.
Minecraft is not leaving- With new console versions (PS4, Xbox 1, and PS Vita) computer version is becoming less popular.
It's been on consoles for some time, but a lot of the players that have it on multiple systems, like myself, will always have a reason to come back to PC. For me, it was the skins and the tiny worlds. For others, it might be the subscription service, if you're on Xbox, or just boredom of the non-infinite worlds.
No game/community will last forever, but Microsoft payer 2 billion for it, so we can be sure that they won't simply let it die out anytime soon.
The activiy is indeed decreasing as far as I know. I think it's mainly because many Minecraft players bought the game long ago and they are starting to get bored of it. Then there's also the Minecraft coder pack that still hasn't seen an 1.8 update while Minecraft 1.8 is already out a few months, leaving modders with outdated versions. This also affects map makers because they can't use stuff like in-game world editing and nbt editing tools when making an 1.8 map.
And for the servers: Together with the decline in activity, there's the new EULA, which may have lead some server owners to think 'If I can't make money from it, then I'm not hosting anymore', and more importantly the takedown of Bukkit. Now, a server either has to be so small that it can use vanilla (= private servers) or so big that it can afford a coder team to make their own api.
While the lack of bukkit is definitely troubling, minecraft definitely shouldn't die out anytime soon. There are still thousands of players on Mineplex, Hypixel etc and lots of maps and mods are still being made.
I still believe Minecraft is one of the most played PC games and will continue to stay like that for a while

Actually the most played PC game is League of Legends I believe, but I think there is a change in community happening. The "oldies" are leaving and newbies are coming in. I don't think it's dying as per say...but hey you never now.

That's why I said one of the most And that's probably because people are just growing up. Combined with the fact that popular Xbox youtubers are bringing in people to Xbox and those people also go and try out the PC version.
I don't think it's dying per say either, but you never know
Games don't simply "die out," in terms of popularity loss, Minecraft has hit the deck there. As with all games, it is impossible to satisfy all players, and Minecraft is a prime example. Now many of the people say that Console Players ruined Minecraft, but did they really ruin? All that is being done is branching the game to newer platforms and allowing people who cannot play the PC Version a chance to play through consoles. How does this ruin the game? Opening up more availabilities?
"Yes but the EULA-"
Mojang spent many months internally arguing over this before releasing it, sure it may anger the many players, but realize that if Mojang decides to change it's policies after a LONG period of debate, it's probably for the best.
So no, I don't believe Minecraft is dying. It has simply hit a roadblock where its popularity will only begin and continue to decline. It happens with all things.
In a way, while there's been "updates" that add a new block, etc., once in a while, the game has basically stayed the same since it came out 5 years ago.
I'm surprised it's still around, much less as still popular as it is.
We're all bored and need a reason to get excited about MC again. Time for a redo.
I've listed a couple of MC-like games to give people an idea of what I mean, but here's another java, voxel game to illustrate what MC could be: https://www.rising-world.net/ (WIP, mobs will added later). As I see it, MC doesn't want to move on. We (and mobs) still walk like we're in casts (no knees or elbows), zombies, spiders, etc., still look the same as they have since Day One, and so on. They've added "fluff" like potions, but the game itself hasn't changed.

Figured it was time for a change.
