After playing 7FTB packs, 12 technic packs, 3 AT packs. After a week-month I had pretty much infinite materials xD
I prefer vanilla it can be harder, and is, than most modpacks. Especially based around tech
I would definetley go vanilla. Mods are fun in all, but just think about it. Mods have taken over. Destroyed the point of the game. Changed the graphics. Changed you. I don't think that mods should be in minecraft. It defeats the purpose of the game itself.

minecraft was made to have moddes in it. the point of minecraft it to give the user the ability to make whatever you want and mods just adds more tools materials and variation of blocks to do that and in survive there are mods that make it to easy but you don't have to use them there mods that make you have to drink and not freeze/fry to death. the main purposes of minecraft is to build what you want and where you want weather or not you have to rage a war to control it or trade for the area and have fun doing it. incorporating mods just expand the possibilitys and utilitys to do them

Well, my mods sure don't change the game in the way you claim mods do; indeed, one of my mods even restores something that used to be in vanilla (ever gone caving lately? Think caves are big? Think again - they used to be much bigger; yet even those cave systems only take me 1-2 play sessions to explore and mine out). Similarly, if I make a mod the restores the anvil to its former glory that wouldn't really be a game-changing mod either (and would be more balanced in terms of repairing OP items; 1.8 really made a mistake when it removed any penalty for enchantments or item durability; of course, the part I think is bad is that renaming no longer keeps the cost down (see above about mining out entire huge cave systems; that's a lot of blocks mined), which also makes using enchanted books very costly in terms of item lifetime).
I always play modded anymore. I've been playing minecraft since nearly the start so Vanilla has become to bland for me, I want to build things but creative is boring as hell and Vanilla is just to tedious anymore. Though if they made Tinker's construct a part of vanilla like they did the piston that would fix that lol.
So I play Modded as long as the mods packs don't include gregtech. I like how mods add more machines/devices that help you build your projects, aka making getting cobble stone easier or mining easier, making more advanced rail system etc. Or they make monster tougher or add more monsters. Anything like gregtech that just adds complexity for complexity sake drives me nuts and I avoid modpacks with it like the plauge.
Thought Sadly I've been in limbo as far as minecraft is concerned since all the mod pack server I use to play have closed due to lack of funds because of the EULA enforcement. I'll admit I saw this coming, cause I know I personally am not giving people money just for cosmetic only stuff ether, I don't do it for games like planetside 2, archeage, etc, not going to do it for a minecraft server. The servers left have so many items banned and restrictions that you might as well be playing vanilla anymore. So I don't play much at all anymore.

iv recently gave myself the task of playing a vanilla survival just to remember and get a feel for why people back it up... i can honestly say i got board in the first few hours of playing "after obtaining a large faction some diamonds for a sword and chest plate and so on. though i can see why some people look at mods and just say no heck iv been there before. when you explain a mod to someone or even show them it can make mods seem like they make everything even more boring and easy and "Destroyed the point of the game. Changed the graphics. Changed you" this is however (usually) not the case mods got a bad reputation for making things easy in the tekkit classic years with EE2 and so on. mods are vary rather difficult and simply add more to minecraft that you can do thus the point of the game. even adding a plugin to a bukkit server is still a "modification" to the game itself.
modded all the way even on vanilla servers i use optifine and some other cool mods (voxel cam, presence footsteps, not enough items,WAILA)

I've been playing a lot more vanilla than mods recently. When I do play with mods I try not to go too overboard, since I also play it on the console and I don't want to make vanilla completely ruined, since my console purchase will just be a waste. Sometimes I do play with mod packs but they add in so many mods that it feels like an entirely different game.

I don't like playing vanilla by myself, because there's not a nice community, but with modded, I forget about that and love playing with the tech and stuff.
I'd say it's a tie between them both with me.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
For me, hollowing mountains never gets old
