Cracked users, thieves, same thing. While one cracked user may not take away from the developers profits, all of them combined, which is a lot currently, definitely leaves a solid dent in sales. Plus, its a cheap game, only $27.60 for us U.S. users, if you can't afford that but can afford an xbox with gold membership and your new call of duty and battlefield, then theres something wrong with you.

So by your logic everyone who doesn't buy it even if the people not going to buy the game are not using a cracked client are still leaving dents in sales since they didn't buy the game? So basically if you don't buy the game you are bad even if don't have a cracked client because at the end of the day you didn't pay for the game and by your logic devs are losing money that way.

Well yes. If you have a new copy of a game (new being defined as a digital download or a hard disc not previously owned by anyone before)and didn't pay the devs for it, the devs are missing out on your sale.

Playing the game is a privilege -- one that you earn by paying for it. Cracking the game is theft. Most days I wish that we could revert to medieval punishment for crimes. Theft was punishable by the loss of a hand.

Your username wasn't lying...
It's not theft. It's not the only copy. They can make more, especially if it's digital, like most games.
And taking a copy of a game deserves mutilation in your mind? What's wrong with you?

No, that just means you have some weird priorities.
Nope! If you already own it then downloading a copy is not illegal. Works the same for emulators and ROMS, its not illegal if you own the original console/games...Having a backup is fine.
By that logic, that means making a English fan translation of Mother 3 (very populat RPG on the GameBoy) is wrong.

The point is that if people knew that the punishment were severe, they wouldn't commit the crime. Sure, it's worth risking getting your hand cut off if you're stealing food that will keep you from starving to death. But if a person knew that the punishment for theft was losing their hand and then they stole something that wasn't worth losing their hand for, then I'd have zero sympathy for them.
I don't like cracked users, but say you want to get it on lets say a school laptop that the school gives out to its students, and you bought an account but can't play without the creaked version on the school laptop to bypass the school setups, Im fine with it as long as they have an account but can't use the actually launcher. Atleast this is what happens at my school… a lot of people play it during like study halls
No it isn't.
Cracking and making an illegal copy is copyright infringement, not theft.
Only theft is theft.
And copyright infringement is the legal definition of the act of breaching the right of the copyright holder to, among other things, hold exclusive rights to copy or distribute and exclusive rights to create works derived from the copyrighted material. Which in layman's terms means: taking something that you don't own or have rights to and doing things with it that you don't have the right to do.
So what's theft? Why theft is when you take property, be it physical goods or intellectual property, to which you have no ownership or rights.
I guess those things are pretty similar. I suppose in layman's terms they're pretty much the same thing. Since this is a Minecraft forum and not a legal debate forum, you could pretty easily just let someone call it theft rather than being a pedant.

No.
When you create an illegal copy you're taking nothing.

Theft is taking property. Copyright infringement isn't.

They aren't remotely similar.
Copying is not taking.
No.
When you create an illegal copy you're taking nothing.
Actually, what you're taking is the copyright holder's right to distribute their copyrighted material as they see fit. Taking that right away from them. Which is really the same right that you're violating when you steal something from someone. You're taking away that person's right to control something that they own.
They aren't remotely similar.
Copying is not taking.
So if you look, you can see that they're very similar. In fact, they're so similar that there needs to be very specific laws built around them in order to properly prosecute people who do these things.

No, you don't take their rights, you infringe their rights.
You don't (and can't) take them away.
After you've infringed them, they still have the same rights they had before you infringed.
After person A infringes their rights the rights holder can still pursue person B for infringing even if he infringes after person A. Person A has not destroyed or removed the copyright in question.
When you steal you remove something from someone's possession.
So if you look, you can see that they're very similar. In fact, they're so similar that there needs to be very specific laws built around them in order to properly prosecute people who do these things.
They aren't even vaguely similar.
There are already specific laws to handle theft, and specific, completely separate laws to handle copyright infringement.

You sir, are a pedant. And rather than continue to derail this thread, I shall restate my position in language that should please your refined sensibilities.
Cracking is tantamount to theft. I would consider anyone who cracks the client in order to play it when they are not entitled to do so, a thief.
Again: Most cracked users problems are: Trying out the game, Don't have a credit card BUT they still have 20$, or they can't afford it, but the worst is they have money but they don't do it.
#4 People are thieves.
#3 People are ok I guess.
#2 People are just, eh.
#1 People should not keep a permanent cracked acc.
I strongly disagree on that, but they are only our respective subjective opinions, so are neither right nor wrong.
All that is important, and all I've been stating, is the very simple and undeniable fact that copyright infringement isn't theft.
You would be wrong.
A thief has committed theft. Making an illegal copy of software is not theft.
Chesterrfloood I feel like more people would agree with you if you would also mention that you think making an illegal copy of software is wrong and against the law. Your right making a copy of minecraft is not stealing but it is still against the law. But the way you keep saying "copying minecraft isn't stealing" makes it sound like you support copying minecraft illegally, which I assume you don't. Just a thought. And believe me, I am not judging you, in fact I agree with you.

Of course. What's your point?

No, very different things.
