Last year when I bought this computer, I did great with minecraft, getting an average of 130 fps. I stopped playing a few months later, and now when I come back, it's laggy as hell, getting 10-30 fps. What's with this? Even with optifine on correct settings, the most I get is 40. Can someone help me? It's really annoying.
one thing I would recommends, is if you have Skype, is to shut it down. Right click on the Skype icon in the task bar, and select Quit Skype to fully close it. Note that just pressing the X, only minimizes it.
I used to run Minecraft on an old, junky, Acer laptop, and Skype would quite often be the cause of my fps drops.
Look for other programs too that might be running in the system tray (far right of the taskbar, click on the arrow pointing up), and see what you can close there.
Using JVM Arguments in your launcher profiles to give Minecraft more RAM may help. The default amount used by Minecraft is 1GB. I bumped it up on my profiles to 2 GB (my laptop has 8 GB) and there was a noticeable difference, mainly with world loading. See this thread:

Oddly enough, I only allocate 512 MB and haven't ever noticed any difference and it usually only uses around 50% of that (I can't even allocate more than 1 GB because I have a 32 bit OS/Java, and if I do allocate 1 GB I am sure to have out of memory crashes on higher render distances - no kidding, as 32 bit processes are limited to 2 GB total and the memory you allocate eats into that limit, which is also needed for other Java stuff. Optifine even tells you to allocate only 350 MB to avoid performance issues, and with that said, Optifine does far more to improve chunk loading than any amount of memory allocated).
My settings are all at minimum, and I haven't done anything but watch videos and surf the net during the period where I didn't play, and I also don't have any browsers or programs open when playing. I'm playing 1.7.9.
Specs:
Intel Core i5 3230m
Nvidia GeForce GT 730M
8GB RAM
My Specs are:
Intel core i7 3rd gen 3.8 ghz
16 GB Ram
Nvidia 680
Windows 7 64 Bit
Other games like Counter Strike: Global Offense or even new games like Dark Souls 2 run smooth on highest graphic settings.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
