After 2.5 years of playing MC I can say its getting kinda dull. Before you hate on me listen. Minecraft has gotten very popular and there are many mods. But its just gotten so boring. Here's my reasoning...
Gameplay is very simple: I understand that it is good that its simple but you run out of things to do...
Same Concept every time: "Alright what should I do? Wait I got it! Build a house!" Basically its a cycle. Render your world. Gather wood. Create tools. Get resources. Build a house. After I build a house the world just feels worn out and I do the same thing again.....
Multiplayer: When I started playing online it was decent. Then I found the fun PVP game and enjoyed it for awhile. Games such as Hunger Games and survival Games. Then It felt worn out like everything else. It basically just smacking each other. "Wink"
Updates: Oh boy this update adds new BLOCK!s@!@!!!! wow! The updates don't affect the gameplay. adding a new block or a mob doesnt change anything besides well nothing. The only good update ive seen is the newest one. Which didnt make it any better for me.
Mods: Ugh..... Yep. Too many items was my first and made the game hard to play without it. Single player commands added some fun to the game but then it just was a way to shoot TNT out of my block face or make a huge TNT field and then crash my game.
Overall the game just feels pretty stale after awhile. At first I didnt like the game at all. I was confused. But then I became a good builder and enjoyed the game. But for me its just to simple and repetitive to enjoy for a long time. Ive been a player since early beta and I know its not an RPG. I know its a building game. Ive just run out of ideas and cant stand to do the same thing OVER AND OVER again. Im sure the time will come when I come running back but for now I just can't. So for the time being Ill play boring o'l CoD and them other FPS games that will occupy me for a few months.... Praise the lord for Fallout 4s release!
There are a lot of people who feel like this, it's just how it is. Minecraft can be quite repetitive, and not everyone cares for that particular fact. But maybe I could suggest adventure maps? I personally find Hypixel's maps fun to play. All adventure maps are difference and maybe you could find one that you'd like to play.

......What? Were you expecting my signature to be funny, interesting, or include an advertisement for a server or YouTube channel? Nope.
Well, when the game starts to get repetitive, I try to look for a hard-to-accomplish structure or system. Not an overtedious one, but something that'll keep me up for a while, and that'll be more fun making than using. After that, I admire a job well done and try to improve on it.
@LividLazuli: For god's sake, please stop typing in blue text, you're sounding as if you're more important than others.
What is the point of this thread? Can these "minecraft is dying/dead to me" threads start getting locked by mods for repetitiveness. I feel like each new thread about it does not have anything in it that lets it stand apart as their own discussion so they should be locked and the OP told to discuss on an older thread.
Just play another game. Seriously, it's not that hard to do. Eventually you'll get sick of that game and you'll have the urge to play Minecraft again. It's really how the cycle of gaming works.

So true,
In my years of gaming, there have been about 4(ish) major games that I play. Minecraft is one of them. Not to advertise or anything they will be referred to as game1,game2,and game3. It all started with game1. This entertained me for about 3 months, I got bored of it and went on to game2. Then I realized how much I fun I had playing game1 and I start that up again. Then I jumped straight to game3, that entertained me for about 6 months and then came minecraft. Minecraft stole 1.5 years of my life but then It started to get old. I soon went back to all of the other games and the cycle continues...
I usually choose to not play this for a long time if I get really bored of it. Then I'll come back and waste about a decade of my time on it. Rinse and repeat.

I have the same problem as you, except that I got bored only after about one and a half years. I've tried starting up survival maps again, but I just can't find the motivation to continue them. For me, Minecraft isn't really just a "pick up and play" game.
I personally think the game could do with more explorational aspects than just biomes, mountains and the occasional chest rooms.
You could try to take a break from Minecraft for a few weeks or even a few months or so. Just stop coming to this site, avoid any news about it (if you can), and don't think about it.
If you play any game a lot, you will get burned out and lose your desire to continue to play it, especially if it is repetitive. Forcing yourself to play will do nothing but make you hate the game and yourself more.
If you truly liked playing Minecraft before, then you will most likely get your enthusiasm back and want to play again.
A few solutions to this problem Ive found have kept me into the game over the nearly three years Ive put into it:
Take a break: Previously said, works wonders for "Stale Syndrome". Stop playing for a month or so, and then go back. Youll have a blast.
Find a unique server: Takes a bit of digging, but there are plenty of projects, active servers, and communities out there who attempt for a truly unique experience, typically based on both gameplay and community. Many of them succeed in a truly awesome way.
Find a great community: Even if you cant find a unique server, sometimes having a great group of people to chat with while you play makes the game worthwhile.
After 2.5 years of playing MC I can say its getting kinda dull.
You're complaining because because Minecraft "only" lasted 2.5 years for you? Are there any other games you've played more than 2.5 years? I mean, 2.5 years is a super long life for any video game. Most games don't even get beaten today.
Instead of whining about a game that held your attention for years, you should have posted, "Even though Minecraft is freaking awesome, I've finally at long last started to slowly move away from it. Wow, what a great game. I mean, I got 2.5 years out of it, and I still play it on occasion! Props, Mojang!"

Alright I know havnt checked this in awhile but I feel like posting this. Trust I loved minecraft. And in a way I still do. I guess Ill take a long break. Also Fallout New Vegas has kept me occupied since its release. Now the mods on that game really do keep me busy. I can honestly say the Fallout series is my favorite series of games. So trust me I can play games a for a long time.

every games gets boring after a while
only thing MC really needs is more NPC depth (villagers, ZombieP, and mobs)
I usually take a break and play Terraria with friends, mostly cause on MC all I do is server work.

You get 20-40 hours out of a game, it's done it's duty.
