Hello all. I've been planning to make this thread for a while but I never actually had the chutzpah to do it, probably because I was so lazy. However, a thread made by Jetra called "Good bye from a veteran player" inspired me and motivated me to bring this up.
Another reason I bring this up is because of the mass amount of requests for the earlier versions of the game. I've never seen anything like it before. Every day on the forums I see at least one thread about "Where can I get Alpha?"
Whether you agree on title or not, Minecraft is definitely not the game it was in Alpha or early Beta. It turned from a simple building sandbox into a complex building toolbox with RPG-elements and customization/opt-out features. I'm not going to do a lot of typing on the OP, just like I did on the "Did the Terrain Become BORING?" thread, because I'm not trying to make a point -- rather, you guys will (if there is one).
When did Minecraft start going in a bad direction?
If you think, however, that Minecraft was never going in a bad direction or that it was always a bad game, I'd like to hear why.
If you think Minecraft got out of a bad direction, I'd like to hear why.
This thread is also NOT about when you think Minecraft hit rock-bottom (if it did). e.g. I don't want to hear how 1.8 ruined Minecraft for you because of the disgusting terrain.
Whether you agree that Minecraft still reaches your satisfaction is totally irrelevant to this topic. If you're going to post something like that, get out. Let me tell you why:
I think Minecraft started to go south when beds were implemented. MC was always in need of a difficulty boost and this pretty much introduced "excessive" customization into vanilla Minecraft. It didn't solve anything, and led me to the question of "Why is this being added?" I agree, you don't have to use beds, but I think there needs to be a fine line between Vanilla and Mod, and there's some things in the game that should have been left as mods. This includes some things I [somewhat] enjoy now, like enchanting and the Boss Dimension. However, in 1.7.3, I still liked the game a LOT, and this is why the red section above is the way it is.
When Notch left, Jeb took over, Jeb is a good dev but lately he has been updating way to fast. Snapshots are good ideas but they should be 2-3 weeks between each one. Also 1 month of break before start working on the next update, at least. I would say pre 1.7.3 Beta was good, after the adventure update, everything got easier. Creative was a good idea, so was hunger but everything else was unnecessary.

^ Reposting for the sake of making it crystal clear.

The text above this quote doesn't pertain to you, Cbeeston1, so don't worry.
You know, come to think of it, a lot of the hate is when Jeb started working on the game. I honestly preferred it much better when Notch was solo.
I really hated the hunger mechanic and the breeding mechanic. It would be nice if we could have breeding, but still have friendly mobs spawn randomly. But hunger, I HATE YOU SO MUCH FREAKING HUNGER
Honestly guys, this is not what I expected. I'm talking about the starting point, not where it seemed most significant. Think about it. Was there something in Beta or Alpha that just didn't seem right to you? Something that piled on and on to this very day? That's why my choice is when beds were implemented.
If however, the posts above are certain, then so be it.
I think the game went in a bad direction when they added strongholds (and possibly NPC villages). I liked the idea of spawning in a world all alone and you have to survive as long as you can! But when they added strongholds, they hinted at the idea that there used to be civilization and you aren't completely alone. It is still a good idea, but it kinda got rid of the original idea. Also, I was kinda upset that pigmen weren't in the villages and the "villagers" were there.

So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...
I'm gonna be honest, I think MC started to go down hill in 1.8, (not because of the awful terrain) because Notch left. Notch, IMO, had a lot more creative ideas than Jeb, it seems like they're just stealing ideas from mods now. Not to mention almost every update is just pointless crap that doesn't need to be added.

I think Minecraft is just adding completely irrelevant features to the game, for example: Bats are useless, so are villagers, also we have a very low variety of weapons in the game. Also they are stealing from Mod Developers. For instance: The Daylight sensor. That was in a mod. So was the hopper. I guess Jeb wants to make Mod Developers useless.
Honestly everything is a "mod." I really couldn't care less if they implemented a "mod" that is actually doesn't change the game, such as few of the animals from MoCreatures.
If minecraft has went to a bad direction the community in these forum must've been slowly dying.might as well be dead.
I can't really call a bad direction unless it affects the game alot, and the players.
They add witches? some player like it,some don't
They add bats? minority likes it and majority don't
They add enchantments? like i said, some like it some don't
That's how a game usually goes, when a player sees something updated which he/she doesn't like he/she will start making these threads "Is this game dying" "Is this game going to bad direction?" etc
But well as they say, haters gonna hate.well people enjoy your minecraft moments while you still can
Minecraft started going in a bad direction 1.4.1, but only for some of it.
Witches: Ugh...I don't like witches as much as I like something else you could've put in that slot...Maybe to update the graphics of the Ender dragon...
Fireworks: Really!? I wasted all of those mods just to see some thing fly and never blow up!?
Tweaked enchantments: Some good, some bad...
Touchscreen mode: Not needed...Maybe only for Windows 8?
Also they are stealing from Mod Developers. For instance: The Daylight sensor. That was in a mod. So was the hopper. I guess Jeb wants to make Mod Developers useless.
So? Minecraft explicitly states they have default permission to use any mod idea in their game. Mod developers will not be useless because they will use the newly-added items to increase their functionality and such.

This isn't about a certain implementation. It's about a certain feel to the game, just as how Jetra stated in his thread. And the forums have been dying. I hope I'm not the only one who notices it.

Just because it's in a bad direction doesn't mean you can't give feedback and hopefully turn it back around.
Notch left. Further from this most of the player base originally joined Minecraft as it was a pure sandbox. There have been so many new features introduced to the game that has changed what Minecraft is all about. Minecraft is no longer about sandbox and building, it's about all the stuff you'd hope to find in Skyrim too, and no original player signed up for this.
Anyway, to add to this. I gave up hope when they added pistons.
Minecraft is still a sandbox game, just with added RPG elements. You don't have to play it like an RPG though. You can still play it like a sandbox.

Not the point. Mojang could add nukes, dog poop, and SingePlayerCommands for SSP for all I care and it could all be optional. Maybe you're not getting the message.
When they added things into PvP that made it near impossible to kill someone, like strength, health, and negative effects. Someone who has enchanted everything and a one hit sword, is near impossible to kill. So when potions and enchantments were added, they had a good intent, but everybody over uses them.
The main place where minecraft multiplayer went bad, is when everybody and their redneck cousin jumped on the bandwagon and started being stupid in servers. It was good for mojang, but it near ruined my experience with a bunch of little kids running around not knowing what they're doing.
All of that is for multiplayer, the game itself, singleplayer is fine, the only thing I dont like is terrain.
So basically the bad-corrupt players ruined the game for me. I still play of course, I just avoid those.
