I know you've said mods aren't the answer you're looking for, so feel free to completely disregard me here.
I personally am a big fan of games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R for the precise reason that they give you a sense of impending doom. An atmosphere of 'lots of things can kill me, and will if I give them half a chance'. I personally believe that Minecraft needs a survival mode that feels like that, only with everything that makes Minecraft fun. Like you said, I want a reason to fortify myself, I want a reason to build a settlement with an infrastructure. Anyway, that is basically what I had hoped Minecraft would be way back in the early days of survival. I was disappointed that I never got it. I wish mods didn't have to be the answer, but I personally don't see any reasonable alternatives.
We took it upon us to try to create that experience for ourselves, because we really want to see it. If you're interested, click the banner in our sig to check it out. We have a list of current features and planned features, and if you can think of anything we haven't thought of, feel free to suggest it.
I did say that but I appreciate what you are saying.
It's a sandbox game, what do you expect? an RPG game? nahhh
the hunger and health bar is just a bonus,as well as the mobs,so don't even try to rant anymore since it's pretty lame and pointless.

I expected difficulty. Just because it's a sandbox means it shouldn't have any respectable difficulty? No, not at all. "It's not an RPG" is not an answer to every argument, no matter how you look at it.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I completly agree with you. Even the "Hardmode" mode is a piece of cake. All you have to do is to be a little bit more careful.
We really need something like touhgher mobs, quicker starving, maybe air, so that if you're in a small closed hole, you will loose air.
More aspects that will make the game harder and therefore a bigger challange to survive.
Those are great ideas! However most players won't like them in just plain vanilla survival so a new gamemode should suffice for that. Like 'Realistic Mode' which could have: What you said, atmosphere thinning, thirst, HARMFUL food poisoning (cuz normal food poisoning is lame), and pitch black caves (cuz caves are so bright and easy to see in now days).
If Minecraft were to become more difficult, I would completely lose the will to keep playing. It's nice to find a game that's not constantly trying to kill you.

It appears that someone took your eyes...
...oh, yeah, and the changes would probably only apply to normal and hard. Easy is good as-is.

Only because you have your Gamma turned up in the Video Options. It wasn't that way by default, you have to move the slider up to make it seem that way. You probably just forgot you did that since many of us did that a long time ago. If you want a true vanilla experience, slide that setting back down and you get your challenge without any changes to the game or mods.

No, it is still bright even on all of my friends comps. And ive never touched the video options anyway.
you dont understand. Playing minecraft is not about sitting in a hole all day long so nothing can touch you. Minecraft is about exploring, building, abd just having fun (sitting in a tree block hole isnt fun even if your a "winning"). if you want a challenge then build a epic house then defend it against endless waves with this mod http://www.skydaz.com/invasion-mod-installer-for-minecraft-1-4-7/

Did you even read the comments above you....the 'sit in a hole, pwn the game' thing was a joke! OK! And mods aren't the answer!
We always see this remark when people are complaining about an aspect of the game. I could understand it with certain other types of game but with minecraft modding is a big part of it, and recognised as such by the developers of the game. It is not possible for Mojang to cater for every single person and give them what they want. That's what is so great about mods.
You can add or remove it as you choose. However, you want the core game, vanilla, to be "fixed" to your spec. What about the people that don't want what you propose then?
Do they get told to play on an easier level, even though they may want the challange that they, personally, get from whatever difficulty they are playing at.
Just mod up, get what you want and leave the rest of the game as is for the people that are happy with it as is.

Do we really need to use mods to fix what Mojang did wrong?
Why not? Out of interest. Mods can break compatibility with other mods (which may or may not be more fun), divide the community (chances are if you like the current difficulty you will not be playing on an extra-hard server), and generally do not work well with servers (either the game crashes or something or the server doesn't use the mod, so you have to choose between the difficulty you want or a fun server). Not to mention that WE shouldn't have to fix what MOJANG did wrong.

It is not possible for Mojang to cater for every single person and give them what they want. That's what is so great about mods. Le see above. The point of the "mods are not the answer" argument isn't because Mojang isn't catering to that person. That is when you use a mod. The point is, is that something is fundamentally wrong with the game at it's roots. Mod or no mod, there's no excuse for something shoddy like that.

Do they get told to play on an easier level, even though they may want the challange that they, personally, get from whatever difficulty they are playing at. If they want the challenge from that difficulty level, they can just play on a slightly lower difficulty level instead (e.g. they once played on hard, now they play on normal). Alternatively, there could be a "mob strength" slider that fills the function of the old difficulties. It's not that hard, really, Mojang could probably come up with the solution in a day.
Just mod up, get what you want and leave the rest of the game as is for the people that are happy with it as is. See above reasons why mods are not the answer.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
If you thought minecraft wasn't hard, why would you even BUY it in the first place?
Because it is fun. Hard =/= fun; hard=something being difficult and fun=something being entertaining. They are two completely different things. Of course, somethings are fun because they are challenging, but not everything has to be hard in order to be fun.
I have played on many servers, all of which were modded in some way or another and they worked fine. Some mods do cause problems, and plenty of mods do conflict. But lots of others work just fine. That's the beauty of mods, you can add or remove what you choose, as I said.
I am referring to client-side mods moreso than server plugins. The main issue comes when two mods you want conflict, and one of them fixes a problem with the game (e.g. terrain or combat or difficulty).
Mojang did nothing "wrong" they made the a game that caters to the minds of millions of players, some of whom want some aspects changed. Again, as I said before, you can't expect Mojang, or any game company to cater for everyone.
They have a system that is practically unused (or rather, underutilized): difficulty levels. Does Joe think the game is really easy? With some tweaks from Mojang, he can play on hard mode and have a decent challenge for once. Does Jack think the game is really hard? Luckily for him, he can play on easy as that was pretty much unchanged from it's original difficulty level. The problem right now is that there is no middle ground: Jack is pleased, but Joe is not and he has to go through the hassle of finding a good mod that doesn't break compatibility with his other mods.
Usually when you get disgruntled with a game you move on. With minecraft there are lots of aspects to explore but mojang themselves can only supply a certain amount. You say its too easy, other people say its too hard. Most people are happy with what they have and would mod if they wanted something rather then ask for it to be applied to the whole community.
As I said before, there isn't much of a middle ground. You have a portion of the people here who say the game is too easy; others say it's good as-is (and promptly give a dead-horse argument to back up their answer, like "it's only as hard as you make it").
Le see my above too. You say there is something fundamentally wrong with the game, you feel theres quite a bit wrong with it from your other posts too. That's fine, I wouldn't begrudge you your right to an opinion, I would however say that, again, there IS an option open to you to fix you issue without impacting on other people. But you are CHOOSING not to use that for the reasons you have stated.
It is an option. Let me rephrase what I have said before: mods are a temporary fix to a short term problem (when they are used to correct a problem). However, they are not the final solution to the problem. There are too many problems that can arise from mods (glitches and what I have said before). Such problems do not usually arise from an official solution (besides glitches) which is why they are the solution rather than mods.
If they are playing on hard one would assume that normal was too easy for them. I don't object to them making the mobs hit harder on hard/core tbh,
I was referring to the current hard mode and the altered normal mode. If they assume that the altered normal mode is easier than the current hard mode... well, they're just stupid, then, and need to do their research.
However I still don't see why "the Mods don't count as a solution", when they clearly do, was used though. I have explained why the person I quoted was obstructing himself from the very solution he wanted.
I've restated it before. Mods are a temporary solution, but by no means do they fix the problem. The only way to truly solve the problem would be for Jeb and Dinnerbone to overhaul the difficulty for normal and hard.

I bought it because it looked amazing! Also, why do you think Mojang added a difficulty system? Hmm, guessed it yet? It's because they want the game to cater to everyone! However, the only major change in difficulty is from PEACEFUL to EASY. HARD mode doesn't really change many noticable things.

How are they only a temporary answer? There are mods that I have been playing since 1.7.3.

That's good! I support this now!
And indeed, I'm currently in pursuit of the thief...

Don't worry I will! I expect it to be much more difficult and fun. :]
