The largest it's ever been at is 400mb. I had to delete it, though, because of mods conflicting and me forgetting to make a backup. It would take me an hour to find all the mods I had.

Must not keep an excessive amount of junk in your folder. Most of my folders size comes from the fact that I have about twenty texture packs in the folder.
After clearing out all the texture packs I don't use it's now 264mb. I think the people with folders over 2gb need to clear out all the custom maps and texture packs they downloaded.
Hahaha, 1+ to you.
Anyway, mine is a mere 332.2MB; it's ok, considering I have no mods, or anything of the sort installed.

5.3!
EDIT: Its not bigger than Chucks D:
most of its saves but i do have some mods installed like:
tropicraft
TMI
modloader
forge
optifine
Not that big. At all. I cleared up a bunch of old worlds I wasn't using. In single player, I only have three worlds I'm using now.
If you go exploring on your world it'll get bigger fast. On my one world when I went to the nether to find a fortress it went from 82mb to 100mb.
True dat! I've started really exploring one of my Creative worlds and the MB is already starting to go up major time. XP
Anyway, now my .minecraft folder is now like...8 Gbs..
mine is 2gigabytes
My mac won't show the folder size, but I do have a screenshot of the thing.
1.52 GB.
